Drag Queen

I have a question that might be considered silly, but I don't want to inadvertantly insult anybody . I am writing a story about a gay man who frequents a gay bar and likes to wear women's attire. I want to call him a drag queen and/or refer to him as being in drag. Would this be a putdown of him or is just a normal way of referring to certain gay men?

Oddly enough, your question isn't silly at all, it's actually sad that in this day in age, no matter how good ones heart is towards our fellow human being, someone is bound to be offended by something as innocent as a simple "label". My Aunt owns a beauty salon and one of her employees is a "female impersonator" and I've been to see her shows on several occasions. She has teased and flirted with me in "his" alter ego many times at the club. One day I walked into the salon before hours and said "Hey girlfriend!" He placed his hands on his hips and as catty as he could yelled out "Do I look like a girl to you?" I was stunned and replied " You sure looked like one last weekend" I'm sure he was just having a bad day, but...wow!

My point is... your never going to please everyone all the time so be true to yourself and don't sweat the small stuff..***** is to short!

I think a cross-dressing gay man could be called a drag queen without offense.
"Drag" has come to refer to almost any kind of specific clothing-- business drag, geek drag, military drag.

Gay bars don't host as many drag queens as they used to, it seems to me. The trend for gay men has moved away from mimicking hetero roles, and the guys are neither queen-y nor hyper-masculine-- just guys who are gay.
Drag is its own subculture.

Okay, thanks for the responses, guys. I rather thought there was nothing wrong or insulting with the term, but I wanted to make sure.

TW, I'm working on the second story about Pauletta now. I have submitted the first one, but it hasn't posted yet. I will add it to my sig line when it does.

Not a put down at all...

Interestingly, apparently many cross dressing men identify as heterosexual.

Drag Queens are flamboyant and fun, and sometimes there is no question that they are 1) men and 2) gay.

So have at it, you are the author, so you are free to create your own world.

The first story has been posted, but the Powers that Be chose to put it in TS & CD rather than in Gay Male, even though it was about a gay man who likes to dress in drag when he cruises.

I think the main thrust of the story is the protag's gayness, not his attire. The clothing is important, not incidental, but it's mostly related to what he does, not how he looks.

I have requested changes in classification of stories before, and it's usually a waste of time, because they won't do it, unless it is an obvious mistake. In the next stories about Pauletta, I will place more emphasis on his sexual activites and less on how he dresses.

This is why I removed my stories, because they all of them cross so many categories that categories don't work for me.
