The Authors' Hangout 2010 Halloween Contest Support Thread

Welcome to the one and only Literotica Halloween Contest.

Except no substitutes.

Always will be

I wrote everything using my favorite pen. Then, I fell in love with the feel of the keys on my Smith Corona typewriter. I always hated the light touch of the IBM Selectrics

There's a great book by Steinbeck hardly anyone has read called (I think) Journal of a Novel. He always wrote in exercise books, but on the right hand pages only. Journal of a Novel is what he wrote on the left hand pages.

Anyway, he obsesses about the type of pencil he is to write with, wavering between B or 2B (I'm sure Shakespeare wrote something about that too :D).

I kinda agree about keyboards. When I started it was on an old Royal typewriter weighed about a ton, and I just loved the effort I had to put in to write. Now, I get hung up on the feel of computer keyboards, and if I'm writing longhand I always write better with a pencil (HB for me).

To all writers, I guess, the magic of actually getting words down gets all tangled up with how you get them down, which is why we have these little idiosyncrasies.

I don't think I could write by dictation - just wouldn't feel right (or write).

I used to have all these English composition books, different colors, black, red, blue, and green. I started by writing poetry, but always wanted to write a novel, but I couldn't figure out why I couldn't write one, until I realized I hadn't lived enough of life, yet. I didn't have anything to write about.

It's weird the stuff we remember. I wonder how much more the great writers would have written, had they had the access to a computer, instead of a quill and had they lived longer, instead of died so young. So many of them killed themselves.

I wonder, if one day, all these words we've all written here, will be gone so much like someone unplugging the electricty or eliminating the site.

"Poof."

Yet, what does it matter. Most of us write because we must. We don't feel complete if we keep all that we think about inside.

I started writing poetry when I was very young, no more than about eight years old. For my age, I guess it was pretty good, but I didn't keep any of what I did and I don't remember any of it now. By the time I reached high school, I started thinking of it as too geeky or nerdy, although I wouldn't have used those words, so I stopped, except to write something cynical now and then.

I started writing stories shortly after that, but I have never kept any of them either. I had a decent vocabulary and knew the rules of composition, and I was able to do this with some readability. I quit that by the time I reached high school too, although I still wrote essays for classes and sold some to my classmates.

I always used a pencil on lined notebook paper. I learned to type when I was in high school, and it is one thing that has stayed with me since then, but I didn't type any stories or compositions until I started college when I was forty. Yes, I had almost 23 years between finishing high school and starting college. I used my wife's Selectric for most of these, and it was possible to make corrections on the copy without using a manual eraser.

On my last job before I retired, I had to write reports of what I was doing. For the first few years, I used pencil and paper, which was the required method, but later I was allowed to write with a computer, which was vastly better. I would really hate to have to go back to writing on paper, either with a pencil or typewriter, because editing is so much easier. :D

The last story I submitted still doesn't show it's score on my main page of stories. :(
But maybe that's a good thing, lol. Actually, it's hanging tough at a 4.46.
(I don't know if you guys can see the score, so we'll pretend you can't. :D)
'Crafting' is going well..
'Surprises' is not. :)

Woo woo! I'm still just excited I got some submitted. :nana:

Hope everyone else is doing well!

I wrote a story in a few hours today. Sent it to an editor to see if it's worth submitting. Non-erotic but the story came easy. I'll probably submit it just for the fun of submitting and seeing what happens.

Questions

I posted a few stories here the got published on the site. I had never written anything before coming to this site.

I write a lot about bdsm and incest. is a pee scene in a story cause for rejection?

Is it acceptable to write stories with just bad decisions but no sex?

If you mean Golden Showers, it might be rejected because of that. Check the guidlines.

I think, in the end, we are all products of the times in which we live. The computer is the weapon of choice for us today, just as the typewriter and the quill pen were in days of old.

But the battle is the same, even if the weapon has changed.

Or maybe I'm taking this far too seriously... still, it's interesting to think about :)

"Weapon" would be a bit strong. We make love, not war, and that is also our preference to write about. :):heart::heart:

Tell me, how on Earth did you manage to join Literotica in 1969?

Under the Wire?

Working like fury to get a last-minute entry submitted. It's tough this time...

Just wondering...
Do you guys vote for yourselves? lol.

Yes, I do. However, since I'm not submitting anything this time, obviously I'm not. But my votes are being cast for others whose stories I've read.

I'd bet in an election year, when the candidates vote, they vote for themselves, so why not give yourself one extra vote on your own story? It's not like it'll change the outcome all that much.

Very true!

You know, I noticed that, and it confuses the hell out of me. It's kinda cool though :)

I wrote a fourth story and had it edited. Decided not to enter it is. Figure I'll go on and build up the story and maybe get it ready for the holiday stories which is about a month a way.

My three entries are doing fine but not in contention for any awards (as usual LOL) Good luck to all who have enteded, it's been fun. As of now I've haven't noticed any large sweeps. But they wouldn't affect my stories one way or the other. To many votes, which is a good thing.

So, my question is to all who have entered before. How high is the winning scores, usually?

The person quoted has pretty good scores, IMO - but what does it take to win?

Just curious. ;)

In General the highest scores are usually over 4.60+ but you never know. According to the rating scale, 4 stars is considered very good. (4.00) Hot is 4.50 or higher. Hope this helps.

I'm at a 4.11-4.12 I'll probably stay there. I think it's a good story though! LOL Way not enough to win. I think you have to be HOT to win at the very least and that's a 4.5

winning or not for myself i've already won. being new to all this writing and this being my first entry it's been joy participating.
it's in the non human category so i know it won't be read as much as other categories but atm my score is a bit like :
almost 9000 views(i do hope most have read it as well hihi) 123 votes and a steady score off 4.60(4.62 right now), even the sweeps that have already passed didn't drop the score at all.
all feedback i got so far is all positive. what more could one want?
you can still read *points to signature linkie*

Good

123 votes and a steady score off 4.60(4.62 right now

For a first story I would say this is excellent. Well done and keep going.

The last content was won with (if I recall) a score of about 4.81 or so, with second and third going down to 4.79 and 4.78ish.

Looking at most of the scores on the Halloween contest they seem to all be a little lower than that.

Ignore me

Mokkelke,

I read your post and interpreted it as a first submission.

Then I read your story, clicked on your bio link and saw it was not your first story, and that everything you have submitted has got an H against it.

Well, I'll just slink over into this corner and keep my mouth shut in future...

Slightly off topic...sorry!

I uploaded a pic for my profile a few days ago. How long does it generally take for it to be posted to my story profile? I figured it would be OK to ask here, because well, it is Halloween related: the picture I mean. ;) I had entertained the thought of showing off me splendorous autumn wings, but I think that might be a bit too revealing. Hmm...

Thanks!

I guess I am behind the times. Does this Dragon software transcribe your words AND punctuate for you?
If so, I am sad that school children have it to use. I am an editor, and I know for a fact that young writers who have been taught the old way don't know how to punctuate (or spell, or write, for that matter), and this could only make them more ignorant, if true.
Sigh.
Hope I'm wrong.
