FIFA World Cup 2010.

It's showtime for italy now.
And now it's go time -- as go home time -- for Italy.

I overslept again and only caught the last ten minutes of the Slovakia-Italy match but even that little bit of this game showed Italy didn't handle addversity very well.

Oh yes, Paraguay-NZ tied Nil-Nil so Slovakia and Paraguay advance from Group F

Halftime, Group E

Nederlands leads Camaroon 1-0; has already qualified for the knockout round.

At the start of the Denamark-Japan game, the announcer siad their equation was simple: Win or Go Home.

I think that translates to Japanese better than it does to Danish; Japan leads 2-0 at the half.

watching the re run . japan clearly outplayed the danes. very accurate. the danes don't seem to be able to penetrate the jap's defence.

earlier i saw the loss of italy to slovakia. i agree with the analysis: italy did not pour on the effort and do it skillfully till the last 15 mins; too late.

two fine games. i cant wait for portugal and brazil tomorrow morning.

I kept Eto'O on my fantasy team and he did me well. :)

Going into the 16, What are your predictions and observations?

The Netherlands have been playing consistent, to form and not really taking chances, so I'd still put my money on NED over Slovakia.

Paraguay is obnoxious. Watching Paraguay play is like watching a Wimbledon match where the players just lob the ball from one court to the other. Nevertheless, playing this way can cause frustration and confusion. I think Japan has some good players and if they can keep possession, they will win.

Germany and England? I'm inclined not to touch this, but in view of recent performance, I'm also inclined to say Germany. Sorry, England.

Uruguay over South Korea all the way! Argentina over Mexico no doubt. The USA has surprised this year, and I am bending toward a win over Ghana, but I am not really 100% confident.

As for the final 4? Brazil and Portugal gave a good game today, but they also didn't have to prove anything to each other. At the end of the day, the most difficult opponent for both will be Spain, but only one of them will draw that straw.

And that's my take. :D

I've overslept through too many games to have a complete picture. Of those I've seen, Brazil looks the best as long as they can avoid being to elegant.

Spain is looking good so far today, but it isn't certain they'll advance. Although that stupid mistake by Chile's goalkeeper that allowed an "open goal" chip shot from 50 yards improved their chances a good bit. (so did the elegant goal they scored just now. :D)

Spain is looking good so far today, ...

Spain kept their cool, but they did let Chile score while a man-down. Portugal is next for them and the winner of the match should go to the finals.

I would have preferred the Suiss to advance over Chile, but I think they used up all of their luck and passion against Spain.

Chile advances to meet Brazil. Brazil should have no trouble with them, except for the risk of injuries due to Chile's Thuggish style. If they stay healthy, Brazil should meet either Portugal or Spain for the championship (whether that happens to be the last game or not; I don't know where their brackets lead)

England-Germany should be a good game, but England hasn't lived up to expectations and Germany just coasted after their first game.

USA-Ghana will be closer than most think. Ghana is the last African team in the tourney and will have the home court advantage. The US has had the most trouble with the teams they're supposed to beat; they do much better as an underdog.

The rest of the games are mostly just thinning out the cannon fodder for Brazil and Portgal/Spain.

I've missed today's games, as well as some before that, but what the hell, for what it's worth:

Uruguay, Argentina, Germany, Netherlands, and Brazil, I'm reasonably confident about. A bit less so about the US, but I too will make them my guess over Ghana. No idea what to expect of Paraguay vs. Japan, though, or Spain vs. Portugal.

Don't know yet whom I'd really like to win (nor even on whom to perv!) but there ya go. :)

Managed to watch the Portugal Brazil game today and I wasn't overly impressed with either team. They seemed to be more interested in defense as opposed to offense. (Both teams did have some good break aways but they didn't seem to be pushing for the offense.)

What will happen tomorrow with the U.S. match? I have no idea.

Naturaly I'm hoping the Americans can push foreward but because our society isn't Soccer oriented as the rest of the world is we are the underdogs. (One of our local schools shut down their Soccer Program because it cost too much, even though they got a Tax Over ride for their American Style Football Program.)

AS for the other teams I'm rooting for, I'm behind Germany.

There are going to be painful inquests for many national teams that have already been eliminated - unfortunately France's inquest will be one of the most acrimonious. New Zealand's team should and will be honoured for performing well above their apparent potential.

Football has become so international that many countries' best teams have very few of their national players.

FIFA needs to look very carefully at the way national teams are selected and built. So many matches showed supposedly good teams perfoming badly.

Uruguay advanced this morning despite a plucky South Korean attack. Final score 2-1

The US has once again conceded a goal in the first ten minutes (seventh minute to Ghana this time) and once again forced themselves into an underdog role. If they somehow manage to win against Ghana, Uruguay is going to thouroughly disassemble them.

Yeah, they need to be a 90 minute team, not a second half team.

1-1 on a pk...US is looking better.

still 1-1 at full time.

I think someone needs to point out to the US team that when they steal the ball from a red-shirt, it might be a good idea to direct it to a white shirt instead of to a different red-shirt? :(

Damn guys, you get no points for hitting an opposing player in the chest when you kick the ball!

Final Ghana 2 USA 1 after extra-time.

Ghana looked good for the full game and occasional flashes of competence from the US simple wasn't enough to overcome the deficit(s).

We need to learn to play the first 15 minutes as well as the last 15. Still, we won a group for the first time since 1930 and had a wonderful moment.

We have perhaps also finally formed a national team "personality" with this effort. You think certain nations, you have a picture of how they play. Think Brazil, Germany, Italy.

The US is starting to gain a reputation for never-say-die efforts. Now if we could only set ourselves up to not NEED it.

If the USA's World Cup achievements mean that soccer becomes a more popular (and profitable) game in the US, then in four years time the US's team could progress further. At the outset, even qualifying to get to South Africa was a massive acheivement, and few pundits expected them to do as well as they have done.

Congratulations.

Here, Here.
I thought the USA team was particularly gutsy and played well.
If Association Football (please don't call it 'Soccer') is played more in the States, you'll have a brilliant team in 4 years.

I too thought the USA team was very good and could have gone further. They lack just a little bit of self belief and perhaps a player with a bit of mongrel. Every great team has an enforcer, someone the other teams are a bit scared of. He doesn't necessarily have to be a dirty player but hard, very very hard, best if he's a ball winning mid fielder.
