FIFA World Cup 2010.

My error, then. the commentators called Spain "defending world champions" and I "assumed" ...

They're European champions, from 2008. It must have been a slip of tongue. But defending the title of the world champion is Italy.

What on earth happened, though? I didn't see the game. A lame day, unexpected brilliance from the Swiss, something else?

Spain was playing like it was a practice game and th Suiss like it was life-or death. Spain was the much more talented team, but the Suiss goal was more like a mugging with three or four Suiss converging on the goalkeeper and hammering at the rebounds from less than a meter away until one went in the net.

Whoa! Yeah, that was certainly a bit of an upset. I think part of the reason we (Germany) are still looking so good is that everyone else in contention for the title has fallen kinda flat so far.

My friend dressed up her cats - one in a German jersey and one in a Chilean one, since she used to live there. This makes me sound like a nutty cat lady but I want a Germany jersey for my cat so bad!

Just get some black, yellow and red hair spray and paint him/her ;)

Argentina trounces South Korea 4-1. Didn't see it, but it is nice to see teams stepping up. I felt bad for South Africa yesterday, but Uruguay totally controlled the match from start to finish.

Predictions for the rest of the day - Greece, 2-1 over Nigeria. France winning by 2 over Mexico. The Mexico squad just looks eh for some reason right now.

I caught the second half of Argentina. Impressive, from what I've seen, despite of all the giggling about Maradona as the coach.

Watched South Africa yesterday, too. Meh. I was kind of sorry for them because of the red card (what is with the red-card trigger-happiness? Have the rules tightened? This one looked to me a lot like ego on the referee's part), but other than that, they were so lame I would have fallen asleep if not for the penalty and the card.

Will watch France later. Can't make any predictions, though, 'cause I've no idea how they're doing. (Missed their first game.)

Going in, it was hard not to favor Brazil to win it all. I still like their chances, but teams like Germany, Argentina and The Netherlands look good too.

On the flip side, the Italians were vastly overrated going in. And remember that the US beat Spain 2-0 in South Africa in 2009, back when Spain was rated #1. I can't see either winning if they manage to advance.

I still think Brazil will win it all, but obviously there are a lot of very good teams still in the tournament :)

Wouldn't usually quote myself but... final score, Greece 2, Nigeria 1.
Well, your score for the day is about 75% -- You had the Mexico France score right, but the side wrong. :p

Speaking of France, has anyone seen their world cup team? They've played like the real team was off having drinks or something while a pick-up squad stole their uniforms.

Wow was that a different Mexico squad that showed up. And yeah, France showed no signs of being the same team that went to the finals last time. Zidane made such a difference for them (even with the headbutt).

Well, I got one right ;)

Tomorrow's predictions (because I'm such an expert, being a Yank and all):

Germany 3, Serbia 0 (Fieryjen, have you painted the cat yet?)
Slovenia 1, USA 1
England 2, Algeria 0

I would love to see the USA light it up, but I'm not sure that's going to happen.

I don't think there's going to be more than one goal scored in the US vs Slovenia match. It should be the US' goal, but I wouldn't take any bets since they're so heavily favored.

i guess my residual patriotism is kicking in. i'm rooting for the US v. Slovenia.!

Put down the beer. :D

At this point, I'll make only a rather safe prediction that it'll be Uruguay and Mexico to continue from group A.

Today's games should all be interesting, though. What's more, husband has to travel for the weekend, so being all by my lonesome, I expect to watch pretty much everything. This'll be more football than I've seen since 2006 or possibly ever!

Well that was bullshit.

Serbia played very well, but this ridiculous Ima give yellow cards out like candy whoops there goes your striker wheee! asshole ref seriously put me off my breakfast.

Not claiming we would have won huge, it might have been a tie, but I do think there's no way we would have just plain lost if we'd been allowed to, you know, play with a whole team.

Yeah I'm a little bitter about this one.

France, Spain, and now Germany have all lost to unfancied opponents. What price tiny Slovenia to beat the USA - after all they knocked out the Russians to qualify.:)

Yellow Cards

WTF? How many more can they hand out. They're treating them like business cards at a conference.

Slovenia - 2 United States United States - 2

Valter Birsa (12') | Zlatan Ljubijankic (41')

Landon Donovan (47') | Michael Bradley (81')

In a game that neither side could afford to lose, neither side lost.

just saw the US save its butt. a great rally from two behind.

anyone see the last US goal that was disallowed? can't figure what the problem was, i could just see a melee.

the announcer can't figure out the problem.

As an American, it shocks me how Soccer lacks an instant replay to overrule the refs on the field. I saw at least 3 incorrect calls, that should have given a final score of 3-1 US and also no yellow card for Finley.

TERRIBLE officiating. Investigation forthcoming?
