FIFA World Cup 2010.

Heck, I'll bet the American team is 90% foreign born. We just hire a bunch of them . . .

You'd lose that bet. All but two born in the USA. One was born in Brazil and came as a 6 year old, and one was born in Scotland and came as a 10 year old.

Personally, I'm fine with immigrants, and fine with them playing sports. As a matter of fact, there are 43 million Hispanics in the USA which is close to the population of many countries participating in the World Cup (51 million in England, 46 million in Spain.)

Maybe they're eventually going to have some sort of impact on soccer in the US?

I hope we can live up to the hype that the 4-0 seems to have generated. I loved the game itself and enjoyed watching the boys play today.

That said, I feel bad for Cahill. Red wasn't warranted, and I hope he is given the lighter penalty of sitting out only one match instead of two.

Was he the guy that kneed someone in the back? That was the only bit I saw and didn't hear who it was.

Really? Most of the L.A. Galaxy team are immigrants. But that would be fair. How many European basketball teams are heavily augmented by Americans? :D

Most of the big European professional teams are heavy with "immigrants" as well. They play for their country of citizenship for the World Cup and for the Olympics. So the U.S. team has to be made up of American citizens.

Soccer has been a popular sport in the U.S. for a long time, and much home talent has been developed; it's no surprise that they qualified for the Cup Tournament.

Italy plays Paraquay tonight in Cape Town with freezing cold weather and rain expected. Wins today from Netherlands and Japan. :)

Yes, that was him. Cahill was trying to take the ball from Podolski and in the attempt slid right into Schweinsteiger, who went down.

Schweinsteiger is my favorite player and I was a bit upset at first when he was down, but even I had to admit that there's no way Cahill did that on purpose. It was just a tackle gone very wrong.

Italy: Paraguay—1:1. Charley's prediction was spot on—Italy sure didn't strain itself, at least, not in the first half. The most exciting thing about this game was the weather.

I didn't read back, but I thought we were talking about the US World Cup team specifically since that was the thread topic. As for the rest of the US team . . . *shrug*

Too bad about Cameroon ... thought Eto'O would clean the clock. It was a 2-1 bet on my part, but I did like the slim odds. I am betting Spain will sweep tomorrow. Can't speak to the other teams ... not really informed about them.

OMG, North Korea managed a goal. They still lost 2:1 to Brazil, but not 11:0 as many had joked. They're such a total underdog it was impossible not to cheer when they scored.

I missed the other two games of the day, but I did see the highlights. New Zealand's goal in 92nd minute was priceless, too. The faces of the Slovaks!

A totally delicious moment that. Proof that anything can happen :D

Korea played well the whole game, but I have to wonder about Brazil's conditioning. I was reminded in the first 20-30 minutes of how much I like to watch Brazil's precision passing; I don't think they let the ball go out of bounds for the first 30 minutes and nearly every pass went to a Brazilian player, in stride.

The second half, Brazil gradually started missing more passes, clearing the ball into open space instead of deliberate passes to Brazilian players; they just looked tired by the time the Koreans scored and nearly gave up another score, too.

Other than that little quibble, it was a very entertaining game.

Nz!

I couldn't believe the New Zealand score!

I'd been getting updates on my blackberry and the last I'd checked it was 1-0 in the 90th minute. I figured, oh well, they'll have to fight that much harder.

Next thing I knew, I was checking in on the Portugal/Ivory Coast match and there's a "1" for EnZed!

I went on an exchange to New Zealand, so I'm certainly wishing they at least make it to the next round.

It's been surprising how low the scores have been (except Deutschland, how about that, FieryJen!?, you've gotta be proud.) It'll get more exciting though, because the team's are going to have to take risks to advance.

I LOVE this tournament!

I missed the games today as I was busy outside.

94°F with 77% humidity here so I would have much prefered to be inside watching the games.

On the other hand I did get a lot done outside today.

Hells yes I'm proud! :D I watched the game at my in-laws' and I was screaming the house down.

But it's only been one game, and fortunes have changed quickly before, so I don't like to tempt fate by bragging too much about it. I just hope they keep playing well and live up to everyone's expectations.

I agree. This can turn so fast. Germany is SO strong though. I'm looking forward to them going deep in this tourney. Best of luck to you ;)

Missed the first game this morning -- overslept -- but the Spain v Suiss game is pretty good.

It's an upset in the making though, the Suiss scored in the 53 minute and leads defending WC champion, Spain 1-0!

The Swiss hung on to beat Spain 1-0. Spain is the top rated team in the World Cup.

Wow!!!

Everyone has been raving about Spain. To lose AND go scoreless. Not a good sign for them.

A sportscenter commentator (just) said Spain was trying too hard to score beautiful goals, the Suiss were just interested in getting the ball in the net.

Whoa! Yeah, that was certainly a bit of an upset. I think part of the reason we (Germany) are still looking so good is that everyone else in contention for the title has fallen kinda flat so far.

My friend dressed up her cats - one in a German jersey and one in a Chilean one, since she used to live there. This makes me sound like a nutty cat lady but I want a Germany jersey for my cat so bad!

Huge upset!

Italy won WC in 2006.
