Racism is a sad, sad thing

This is my first time posting here so, Hello there!

My first story was approved and published by Literotica this morning and I’m over the moon I already have over 4,000 views. However, there’s something that’s making me really sad and I want to ask your opinion.

I’m young (22) and this is one of my first stories ever and I happened to write about interracial sex (a black male and white female, if you must know). I submitted it under “interracial love” and clearly state at the beginning of the story the male is an African American. I got a lot of hateful and racist comments (most including very hateful and bad words – don’t get me wrong, I use profanity in my stories but there are certain limits…) because one of the characters is black I just couldn’t believe it. Why would someone who doesn’t like black people (or any other race, for that matter) go through the trouble of reading a story that is clearly marked as having an African America character just to go leave racist comments? I’m puzzled, here!

I joined this forum this week and met so many interesting, literate people that I thought someone out there must have an answer or opinion on this. I didn’t delete the racist comments yet but I’m going to – I won’t allow that kind of “thing” to stay anywhere near something I wrote.

P.S.- I'm really sorry if this topic doesn't belong here. I tried to choose the best place for it and this seemed like it so here it is.

One of my daughters is married to a black guy; I assure you the racism works both ways. Many in his family werent thrilled. She isnt what his parents hoped for, either. I find it refreshing that his people are very much like me. Common ground.

Yes, I am aware that racism works both ways. I dated a black man and I got a lot of hate from black people (women mainly - go figure) because of that. However, that's not really my point - my point is what goes through someone's mind to go to the extent of reading a story they know they won't like (because it has characters they do not aprove of for whatever reason it may be) just to leave disrespectful comments.

It is a very common character defect called contempt prior to investigation.

Guess the obvious answer is some people go out of their way to find something to get upset about...it's stupid as hell, but there are a lot of folks out there like that, trying to "spread the venom" so to speak.

Someone who has problems with a particular race going out of their way to read a story that has clearly listed an interracial theme, just so they can make disparaging or hateful comments, is someone with way too much free time on their hands, and way too little common sense.

In a nutshell, this is how I feel about it...

If you don't like the theme of a story, don't fucking READ it! Simple as that.

Don't take comments like those, seriously. The person who left them only wants a reaction. They do not get much attention in their everyday life, so unwarranted attacks on internet erotica is better than nothing. Now, the commenter has made a 22 year old woman think about him. That will be enough to get him off for the next couple nights.

If your profile said you were a 53 year old man, no one would have bothered.

You never know, some people actually like 53 year old men... :D

I agree but it looks like some people don't. Anyway, I deleted the comments already.

Take a moment and just ponder the number of times you've done this in your life. Cars, music, politics, religion, movies and food are all examples for me of being closed mind before any opportunity was ever given. A good example for me was the film The Reader. My opinion was I'm sick of movies with a Nazi theme. Reluctantly I went and found it to be a far deeper film and actually enjoyed it.

No doubt if you encountered a tiger on the road you'd work out a Baye's Probability Analysis to decide if the tiger is a threat. Most of us would haul ass.

The sensible among us, though, might recognize that we are incapable of "hauling ass" fast enough to escape an interested tiger. In fact, we might just realize that running is very appealing to felines, generally encouraging them to join in the game. A game, needless to say, the tiger is more likely to win then is JBJ.

Some assessment of strategy is necessary, then, but not so much that you fall in to the trap of the "Unexpected Tiger."

Youre talking shit cuz most people dont reason when confronted with a known danger; its why you scream on a roller-coaster or horror movie. Your head has already done the math and the nigger loses based on typical performance.

TIO would. He'd drag out his calculator or pencil and paper, and do the math...well most of the math or some of the math until he slides down the beasts throat.

Interesting, JBJ...the thread, I know, is about racism, but we were talking about tigers. What happened? Did your reality slip out,or were you distracted by Pooh's bouncy friend?

And JBJ would run, hoping the tiger (or whatever his primordial fears dream up) won't catch him. Sorry, boy, but if it's a tiger, all you'll get is the satisfaction of not seeing it as it comes up behind you. Far better to try a rational approach than take a guaranteed losing tack. Oh, but that would be rational, and that would clearly leave JBJ out of the game; all he can manage is flatulent gut reactions.

There are readers here who like to get irate. It's apparently their preferred emotional state, and they're constantly stoking it and nurturing it. They do the same thing constantly in the Loving Wives category, where they'll read an entire story about cuckolding or cheating, and then explode in vitriolic outrage in their comments, often getting quite personal towards the author.

I think what's going on is they want the erotic buzz, but they feel guilty about it and so condemn the very thing that gets them off. That way they get to be sexually titillated and then judgmental and disapproving at the same time, making them feel superior to their own urges.

Their attitude towards your work is kind of like how Oscar Wilde (I think) described the lewd writings of a contemporary: They see it like a dead mackerel in the moonlight, shining and stinking at the same time.

you understand the point I was making.

Yep!

My father understood the nature of alligators and was comfortable swimming with them because he had a good idea of the risk. Most people wont do it. I wont do it. But I've seen naturalists get in the water with them with immunity, too. And most people have no idea how to control such animals, so I dont recommend taking the risk.

Its how it is with most things that come with risk. I never fear for my safety in black neighborhoods at night, cuz I know blacks and know how to control them. that is, I know how to control me so I dont scare them and get a bad reaction.

So racism may be a bit of unconscious awareness of incompetence to deal with blacks or alligators or girls on a date or whatever.

People can be dicks

Bronzeage is spot on! Change your profile, and delete such comments, and don't give them a second thought. It's parr for the course here. I write gay male fiction. It's in the gay male category, and there's no way anyone can read the story without knowing what they're going to be reading...and yet I still get nasty, anti-gay comments on the stories now and then.

Such readers are trolls and their only aim is to come in, post graffiti on the story, and then run off. Stupid kids playing childish pranks as they've nothing better to do--like letting the air out of someone's tires. And as Bronze saids, it undoubtedly does give them a naughty thrill to know they shook up some 22 year old female. Like guys who make a rude comment to you as you walk down the street.

If you want to write more stories here, you have to shrug these off or turn off the comment feature. Because no matter how good a writer you are, or where you post your stories, such people are out there trolling and looking for something to spray paint.

Feel free to come and rant about it, and we'll always give you a shoulder to cry on when/if it happens, and commiserate with you as it happens to us too. :rose: There is, however, there's no use wondering why it happens. People are and can be dicks.

Thank you so much for being so kind! It really means a lot to me. I'm ok with people saying they think I could write this and that part better and telling me why or how they would do it. I can take that because I want to learn. I just think being disrespectful leads people nowhere.

Thank you for your opinion. I guess it's like those politicians that are anti-gay and say it's against Nature and whatnot and then, it turns out, they are homosexuals.

Alright, among some really bad comments like the ones I was talking about, I got this:

"You have set the stage for a series of vignettes involving your heroine and boss Eric Danna both inside and outside of the office...an independent free spirited white woman seemingly being taken yet willingly submitting to her sexually desirable black boss! Their relationship begins clandestinely no doubt due to "business norm fraternization policies" and evolves from there. Look forward to reading and enjoying your literary maturity and development."

I'm really happy now, and this gives me energy to continue writing and learning. I don't mean everybody HAS to like me work, but don't mothers teach people to shut up id they don't have nothing nice to say nowadays? LOL I'm just kidding but I wanted to share my happiness.

Angie - skimmed your story, looks hot. I'll give it a better read and a shout-out when I get home from dee office.

As a person of color, I appreciate it when people do erudite and progressive IR erotica that doesn't fall back and rely on tired, dated, also-ran stereotypes to power it. I'll leave those for the 10-watt lightbulbs like JBJ. Keep on doing you! ;)
