Does anyone know of any free-to-download video editing software that is fairly easy to learn the use of? I don't need many special effects. I just need to learn how to cut clips together, add sound effects, and overlay text on the scenes. is there anything out there that fits my needs? If I have to pay for it, is there anything cheap that fits my needs?

Also, is there anyone out there willing to help me learn said software and techniques that could be used with it?

I use a program named "Showbiz" that came with my daughter's digital video camera for what you're describing. It is fairly straight forward and intuitive.

What Showbiz can't handle, MyDVD, which came with my DVD/RW drive takes care of. It isn't quite as intuitive, but it is not difficult either.

I'm not sure if either program is downloadable, but you might check the software that came with your camera and/or drive to see if you have something that will work for you.

There is something I forgot to ask about. Ripping stuff from DVDs. Will I need special software for that?

I just use Windows Movie Maker for the simple stuff. Windows Media Player will rip unprotected stuff.

My windows Media player will only let me rip CDs...

I need to be able to rip DVDs for clips. I'm trying to start a Kung Fu movie review blog thingy...

For dvd ripping, I use Handbrake

http://handbrake.fr/

Free and pretty competent.

I just tried that, it will only rip to M4V or MPK, which I can't find an editor for at the moment, which means I need a way to convert MP4 to something that I can edit...

Woohoo! I found a solution to most of my problems! I had a problem where everything went all squiggly, but that was just a bad codec. It's all good now though.

In a couple of weeks I will be recording a theme song, and in the mean time I will be working on scripts and all of the editing for a couple of reviews. this will either be really fun, or really annoying. Either way it will be a lot of work, but I am hopeful for the best.
