If nothing else, it'll be grist for the media's mill. ;)

Stevens is a Liberal and Obama will appoint another one to replace him, so the court should/could/would remain divided as it is 5/4 in favor of the good guys, but who knows?

Remain divided 5/4? Agree.
Good guys? *raises eyebrow* To each their own

As you are a fellow Oregonian and new to my experience, I welcome you to the forum, and meet your raised eyebrow with one of my own.

I am part of that large majority of Americans that desire a small government, low taxes and minimal interference in my puruit of happiness, as per the letter and spirit of our founding documents.

What say you?

I find it interesting (but not surprising) that Justice Stevens decided to pull the ripcord once a Democrat was in the Oval Office. The conservative/liberal make up of the court won't change of course, but the POTUS needs to appoint an Asian, Native American or Pacific Islander to the court to further it's diversity. ;)

It is funny how conservatives always claim to be the
majority when the empirical evidence suggests otherwise. It is even more outrageous that they claim to be the protectors of individual liberties, when it is their allies and enablers, the religious right, that would impose its moral restrictions on all of us. Incredible.

Why do you find that interesting? It's what always happens. The justices pull the cord when they think the administration will replace them with someone like them. Doh. What's so interesting about that? Point out any time something different has happened when the justice didn't go because of health or (as in the Goldberg case) another job was dangled in front of them that they wanted more.

On the Republicans crying for a centrist pick, I agree with cfurher--what would Scalia or Thomas (or any of these Republicans doing the crying, for that matter) do if the Democrats suggested the pick? And then do likewise.

I think you have soaked far too long in your own vat of left wing mantra.

Had the Religious Right any power at all, there would be no Abortions committed and Homosexuals would have remained part of a deviant Bohemian minority.

Had 'Conservatives' any power at all the ecological scam that mushroomed into the Global Warming Hoax, would still be just Tree Huggers and PETA, instead of a huge drain on the economy and the corruption of science.

You have no 'right' to free healthcare, no 'right' to a 'fair wage', no rights to anything but life, liberty and the opportunity to succeed via your own resources.

What a bunch of whining nanny state parasites there are on this forum.

Silly me, I forgot to put a *sarc* tag or one of these  at the end of my post.

I always wonder if someone calling for their adversary to act as an advocate would (ie: Reps asking Dems thru the Prez to nominate a centrist) do so because they really think anything will come of it or if they do it because its what they think their constituants would want.

I have no doubts at all that the next nomaination will be in line with the last one and the administration in general. That's just how it goes down. Unless something is going to be put in place that there must be 4 right justices, 4 left justices and one from some outsider type group (greens or whatever).

You just proved my point. Now wallow in your excess.

Agreed...and the filibuster may last until the Election in November and the seating of new electee's in January....Ve shall see!

;)

ami
If the filibuster lasts to the election the Democratic majorities in both houses will increase.

Have you forgotten the binge of "Contract On America" Republicans was followed by the purge when Gingrich shut down the government in advance of the following election?

Do you think the apathy that Conservatives are counting on during the off-year election will be reinforced by a contentious Supreme Court battle, with Roe v. Wade and many other landmarks hanging in the balance?

You don't know America as it is, Amicus.

Interesting perception and prediction, Huck, and I suppose anything is possible in politics.

Perhaps it is not so much 'apathy' that many perceive, but a true disgust with this new administration that has run roughshod over American principles and values and trashed the Constitutional concept of government.

Perhaps it is a long, long overdue rejection of Progressive Liberalism, which has indeed transformed this country, but not in a good way.

To little avail, I have fought the leftward drift in America for most of my life; it would be rewarding to see the America I know and love returned before my time arrives.

I won't belabour the point of just how unique America is in all of world history other than to state it once again.

So assume Obama nominates someone pretty much verbatim matching Stevens (except in age, heh). With solid jucidial pedigree, long experience and no blatant skeletons in the closet. And subscribing by and large to Steven's jucidial philosophy.

What would the Reboublicans' argument for filibustering be? That Obama is not re-stacking the court to suit their ideology?

Their reason is obvious, to stall, obstruct, embarrass and annoy everything and anything Obama does. But I somehow don't think that woud play out well for them here.

I suspect they'll pull a Sotomayor, and huff and puff to get tv time, and then let whoever it is slide past with a handful of votes.
