Abusive, derogatory and even racist behavior directed at House Democrats by Tea Party protesters on Saturday left several lawmakers in shock.

Preceding the president's speech to a gathering of House Democrats, thousands of protesters descended around the Capitol to protest the passage of health care reform. The gathering quickly turned into abusive heckling, as members of Congress passing through Longworth House office building were subjected to epithets and even mild physical abuse.

A staffer for Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) told reporters that Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) had been spat on by a protestor. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a hero of the civil rights movement, was called a 'ni--er.' And Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) was called a "faggot," as protestors shouted at him with deliberately lisp-y screams. Frank, approached in the halls after the president's speech, shrugged off the incident.

But Clyburn was downright incredulous, saying he had not witnessed such treatment since he was leading civil rights protests in South Carolina in the 1960s.

Where are the assault charges? Didn't they arrest anyone. Mild physical abuse is assault. Spitting on someone is assault with bodily fluid, and in most states is an even harsher penalty. The death threats against our representatives, whether the President or not, have to be dealt with. These people should be locked up for a good long time. Like the douchebags who brought rifles to Obama's town hall speech. Why in the fuck weren't they immediately blown away by the Secret Service? Standard policy should be: Approach a place where the President is with a gun, get a free bullet to the head.

That was a mistake. He should have pressed full charges. In Indiana that could be a year in jail. I don't know about other states.

I agree, but it would have been spun to look like he was having someone arrested for merely protesting and thus, that he was trying to stifle free speech. He might have been aware of that.

I'd let them spin it. Those who would spin it support spitting on people you disagree with anyway. The message has to be sent that there are consequences for actions like these. I'd also force the man who spit to be tested for any diseases that can be carried in saliva and if any are found have the charges increased as a risk to my health. Some diseases have been known to carry tougher charges for bodily fluid attacks.

My favourite was when he told us to "Run, run as fast as you can" from a church that advocates social justice. "Social Justice (pause for dramatic effect)...social justice and economic justice....those are code words (pause for dramatic effect)....the rallying cry on both.. the Communist Front and the Fascist Front..."

He goes to warn that we are "in Grave Danger...whatever your church is, it is infecting all of them. It is a perversion of...the Gospel"

Ive been asking myself the same questions... The only thing I can think of is that our Congressmen are not pushing it so the assholes on the right do not have a larger platform when their case goes to court, then get appealed to a higher court.

Yeah, I think they're accepting the symbolic frame of the event as it is. Giving those people any more publicity just gives them more chance to spew and spread their hate. Unlike the '60s, those people are a small and fractious minority. The "niggers" and "faggots" have representation now, and provide the difference in the passage of healthcare reform.
