It seems the obstructionism of the minority has had some impact as well huh little bear?

"We suspect the absolute gridlock in Washington also depressed consumers," said Bernard Baumohl, chief economist at the Economic Outlook Group in Princeton, N.J..

"Rather than seek some common ground on health care and financial reforms, both political parties demonstrated legislative incompetence and ideological rigidity. The constant bickering and lack of progress in the nation's capital doesn't engender much optimism among households."

Bickering between the Progressive and Moderate Dems, does seem to produce grid lock. lil man.

As if you need a single Republican vote to pass your agenda. Remember how you were going to run us out of the country and take over and get 'er done?

Well yeah if the repubs decide that they're going to throw the filibuster procedure at anything the dems want to do, nothing will get done. The same works in reverse too.

That kind of undermines the meme that the Democrats were trying to "shove reform down the throats of America" doesn't it? You know, since they were trying to deal with the "Party of No" in good faith and didn't actually shove anything down anyone's throats..

It's been their main M.O. since losing the majority in 2006. Drag your feet on every single piece of legislation, even those of which they approve, even when submitted by their own party, in an effort to brand the Democrats as ineffective.

The tactic was hailed by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) and shows the tactic of the "right" very plainly..

“I love gridlock,” Coburn said. “I think we’re better off when we’re gridlocked because we’re not passing things.”

Coburn — the Senate’s “Dr. No” — believes that “charges of obstructionism are a mark of honor he will wear as proudly as ever in the coming weeks.”

There you have it, ladies and gentlemen, Republican philosophy in a nutshell.

Just say no.

lol Scott Brown...

I saw it didn't take long for Scott Brown to be labeled a traitor, a hypocrite, and a RINO by the GOP for his approval of the Jobs Bill.

I guess he decided that he might want to get re-elected in Massachusetts to a higher office than dogcatcher in the future. Time will tell.

He's already getting targeted by the Teabaggers. Too funny.

What is even funnier is the 'We-knew-all-along-he-was-a-RINO' when just a few days ago was being heralded as the next Ronnie...

No matter how much good news there is, focus on the bad news.

Unless the republicans are in power, then reverse it.

Nice analysis.

Really? The republicans are responsible for the consumer confidence index?

By a few only. Look at the threads; there were quite a few of us with a very cynical view towards the new "savior" even going so far as to point out that we should not treat him like Obama until we did our homework on the guy...

At least as a Republican, he'll get his due diligence by the next election.

Ironically, Obama sill still be off-limits until he actually declares he is a Marxist.

Obama is a Marxist!
No, he's NOT!

Obama 2011: I am a Marxist!

It doesn't matter!

No of course not. I'm saying you're seeking out any shred of bad news you can find and focusing on it, even when economic news is overwhelmingly favorable.

Remember what the economic picture was like just three months ago? It's VASTLY improved since then, by almost all economic indicators. 18 months of job losses not only stopped, but reversed into actual growth! GDP increased at a better-than-expected rate. Non-partisan assessments of the stimulus, though still early, are saying it was effective and that it will be even more effective in the 1-2 years to come.

Obama cut taxes by 246 Billion dollars too.

Yet here you are, ignoring all this and focusing on what is almost certainly just a temporary blip in a tide of economic improvement.

Really... a RINO... for voting for a jobs bill that includes tax breaks for small business? Granted is it is a spit in the ocean for the tax cuts that are necessary but it hardly makes him a turn coat.

That was from a fringe network, MSNBC. Owned by GE who fully supports your St. Obama.

VASTLY improved aint putting food on the table or paying the rent and I hate to tell you, but jobs losses aren't stopping anytime soon. All I see is layoffs galore. I just read this morning about SF school board approving nearly 900 pink slips and city workers expect massived layoffs, this isnt stopping.

I just don't think Obama took it seriously and grossly underestimated the unemployment numbers calling for 8% unemployment not so long ago. Instead he focused on healthcare and cap and trade.

If you call that bashing, so be it.

Not quite Cap'n.. Just ask good old Dr. No of Oklahoma.

You still wouldn't know a Marxist if Karl dug himself out of the grave and bit you on the ass.

Tell it to his former supporters.. there are some pretty nasty comments on his facebook page..

"a R_I_N_O always has an excuse ......"

"Just another liberal from good ole' Massachusetts! I would have rather voted for Kennedy! At least he would stab me in the chest and not in the back!!!!"

"You came to Washington to be an independent voice? Are you kidding us, is that how you are beginning your explaination? Your kind of voice has been there waaaay too long. "
"Let me 'splain.. No wait, it is too much. Let me sum up.."

"BENADICT ARNOLD !!"
It's Benedict..

"I want a refund. Voters don't forget Scott. "
A refund?

"Not at all happy with this vote Mr. Brown. This was a very bad decision on your part. We campaigned for you. We donated to your campaign and you turned on us like every other RINO."

"If you were independent you should have run as such....not someone with an R attached to his name. Shame on you! If it is not what you wanted....you should not have even voted for it....what is your problem?"

"Scott Brown voted to increase spending to develop government jobs. He is a trader and should be watched closely." A trader? lmao!

Yes, Reuters says the magic word:

Sales of newly built single-family homes unexpectedly fell to a record low in January, according to government data on Wednesday that hinted at potential trouble for the fragile housing market recovery.

Potential trouble? Really? Today’s figure is the worst since they started keeping records in 1963. As Daily Finance’s Joseph Lazarro notes:
[H]istorically, increases in home sales are strongly correlated with greater demand and an economic expansion — and decreases are linked to the opposite. However, government statisticians also caution that the new home sales figures contain a margin of error and are subject to revisions. Further, economists note that it typically takes three to five months to detect a trend, so investors should not read too much into data from one month.

Unfortunately, new home sales also dropped “unexpectedly” in December. That followed November, when new homes plunged “unexpectedly” to the lowest level since April. Indeed, new home sales have been trending downward steadily since August.

In related news, the Mortgage Bankers Association says that mortgage applications declined by a seasonally-adjusted rate of 8.5% last week. Michael Fratantoni, MBA’s Vice President of Research and Economics, attempts to place the blame on the snowpocalypse that gripped the East Coast. Similarly, the Associated Press pre-emptively blamed the weather for the latest drop in consumer confidence, which also turned out to be “unexpectedly” bad. But there were no blizzards in August, when the housing market started falling. Unemployment increased and remains persistently high. Very little of that has to do with the weather. As John Carney notes:

The story-book recovery was dependent on a recovery of the consumer and a decline in the saving rate. If consumers lost some of their apprehension about future income prospects and future employment, they might begin to spend more on both retail goods and to purchase homes again. Anticipating this return of the consumer, businesses would increase capital spending and inventory.

We got the last part, but not the first part, raising the possibility that the recovery on the business side will falter, sending the country into a double-dip recesssion. That this malaise is occurring despite the extension and expansion of the homebuyers’ tax credit suggests that Americans are casting a vote of no confidence in Obamanomics.
