Anyone else catch much of the Question Time-type of exchange Obama had with the GOP this afternoon?

You didn't if you watched Fox - they cut away from it, the GOP was getting schooled so bad.

I heard a few minutes. Hopefully, video footage will spread beyond the realm of policy wonks and Move On dot org members. And shortly thereafter, pigs will fly.

Don't you find it just a bit ironic that when the Demo's had their so called super majority that they didn't give a damn what the repub's thought.

Suddenly it changes and the Repub's are getting chastised for not co-operating.

A pox on both their houses.

Like most conservatives, you mistake reality for irony.

Obama has majorities in both houses of Congress, he doesnt need GOP cooperation or goodwill or squat. Yet he cant move the herd where he wants to go. He's impotent, is what his problem is. You guys are a hoot.

My takeaway was he basically told the Republicans "I realize you don't love our plans, but yours suck more. There's a reason you're the 'Party of No'."

I particularly enjoyed how he clearly outlined that half of what the Republican congress is up in arms about was spending from GW's Budget. Yeah, it's tired to blame the previous administration but the fact is when a President takes office he inherits the spending of his predecessor.

Sadly though any policy that would actually do serious good is likely to be politically unpopular. While the Democrats have better policies, they're far from perfect. Obama hinted at the fact he'd really like congress to cut pork barrel spending in general on both sides of the aisle. Of course, the problem with our representative democracy is a senator can push for something that is good for his state but wasteful for the country and it will increase his popularity back home.

Your President has 60 votes in the Senate and a majority of votes in the House. Dubya aint President no more. Nobody stands in Obama's way but other Democrats. So quit whining about the GOP...your team has the votes to do any goddamned thing you want. GO FOR IT!

I liked how he pointed out to them that their constant braying about "Socialism" and "government takeovers" and the like boxes them into a corner where the GOP has no solutions to very severe societal issues, and is politically vulnerable if they compromise in any way with Obama.

That is a reality that Conservatism has not yet come to grips with.

HUCK

Your team has the votes; go do something and stop whining about the GOP.

They're not conservatives. They're revolutionaries. They intend to create a society based on a fundamentalist interpretation of the Constitution, plus a few additions. Mostly limiting the rights to 'True Americans'.

If they succeed it's going to be as much fun as being ruled by people with a fundamentalist interpretation of the Bible.

Quit whining and grow some nuts.....

They WERE getting schooled but it was painfully apparent that they were incapable of LEARNING!!!!!

You Democrats do nuthin but make excuses for doing nuthin. You have the votes, so do something.

JBJ - I see you're still using the repeat-a-lie-often-enough-and-they-will-believe-it method of discourse. Obama does not have 60 votes in the Senate. He has to depend on Independents to reach a 60 vote majority. That means whatever the Dems want to do, it gets watered down by the Independent swing votes. That's totally different from a 60 vote Dem majority.

Lucky for you, the repeat-a-lie-often-enough-and-they-will-believe-it method of discourse is quite effective, so carry on, although I think your posts would be much more effective if you used shit-brown text.

You mean Leiberman and Jeffords. Their votes are solid for the Democrats.

Excuse me? Leiberman torpedoed the public option and the medicare buy-in. That's not "solid for the Democrats", it's solid for the Republicans.

Leiberman says he's a Democrat; he confirmed it on teevee the other day. He was your vice president candidate in 2000.

Lieberman is just laughing. He is in his last term and is trying to keep his image up so he can join Sara on the Rubber chicken circuit for big bucks in his retirement.

Doesnt matter; he caucuses with the Democrats and calls himself a Democrat. If Obama cant control him its not a GOP cooperation problem.

I just wonder if Obama has the balls to use LBJ's methods to control Congress? I guess that the difference, Congress knew LBJ would find a way to fuck 'em if they strayed off the Reservation. Obama hasn't the insider knowledge to pull it off, despite having the FBI and the Secrete Service at his beck and call. Of course he still has the IRS. :D

JACK

Obama is fresh out of money to threaten with. During LBJ's reign 95% of adult men were employed; today 20% of adult men are out of work. Its like when Dirty Harry pointed the pistol at the thug and asked if the thug felt lucky, well the thug knows Obama emptied his gun.

Obama could restrict the spending in selected areas, like slow down the F-35 or reduce spending on 'special projects' which are critical for a Congressman to pay off his base.

Obama controls all the money that is spent by the government. So in effect he doesn't more money, he just needs to control the money the Government took form you/us. :D
