a few things derailed my habit....

having one fall into the wrong hands was rather painful and caused a stilted output.

I had one "invaded". Lots of fighting for a few days. She now knows the next time she does it, I am out the door.

I have attempted at keeping a journal several times over my lifetime. I have a stack of them that have writing on the first 10-20 pages. I admire people who are able to keep up with it. I hope to be able to get it to stick someday as I am sure it is helpful to have a place to keep secret memories and thoughts that can be recalled later. (Although I can see where having your private writings invaded would cause immense problems)

I found there is too much writing...and not very creative at that... in recent journals and not enough drawing. As a poor substitute, I take more digital photos.

Im working really hard to keep the sketchbooks going, but I have to force myself to leave the paper in the book! I had much rather take the paper and tape it down to the drawing board, I cant help but think thats why most of my stuff from over the years is gone. I too had a rather uncomfortable moment with an erotic drawing at a place I worked. I totally understand.

A drawing a day with a painting worked in as time allows.

It really DOES require some discipline in order to make it habitual.

I am also terrible at taking photos. I did get a new fancy-pants digital camera for Christmas though, so hopefully that will change. There are a very scarce few pictures of my life over the last 16 years or so... I figure I'd better remedy that.

Austin....
I HIGHLY recommend a book I just discovered, and got for Christmas>
"An Illustrated Life, drawing inspiration from the privaet sketchbooks of artists, illustrators and designers.", Danny Gregory.

it includes R.:D:cool: Crumb!

I have lots of sketchbooks... but used randomly. ..and pages taken out or others taped in. such that a book is not chronological and many are in use at the same time.

I got no problem with "mis-sequencing"!:D

I did as well. The now-ex searched through my things one day when I was away. Read the entire thing. Thought he had the right to do it.

Now I have 6 or 7 books/journals full of poetry, but not a consistent journal.

I keep a sketchbook and an idea journal handy and do my best to contribute to one or the other at least once a day if I'm not already working on a project.

I think what's key is that people take a day or two off from it and become discouraged. Go ahead and give yourself a break; write off the days missed and keep at it. It isn't easy doing one thing a day and for some it requires easing into.

I've never had anything invaded, but I don't write down my most intimate thoughts anyway; I lack the desire to do so, quite honestly.

Meh. I keep a couple of sketch books, but I'm nowhere near consistent with them.

i am better about keeping up with my sketchbooks now than i have been in a long time. they are a mix of random ideas, sketches, quotes, shit... i keep a journal that i write in when i have friends in my studio. they are little collections of snippets of conversations. i realized that if i treated my journals like work, i didn't want to do it, but when i looked at it as play, it became alive for me. if i don't write something down, i am guaranteed to forget an idea i may want to explore more of later. i never considered myself a "journal person." i've always preferred the scrap of paper or napkin, or back of a receipt from the gas station when my mind needs to spit something out. then five years later, i'm cleaning out a purse, and i find some odd quote from a random person.
the sketchbooks and journals are pretty much filled with poor grammar, bad handwriting and doodles. and i don't like lined paper.
i try to keep travel journals. they give me a place to reflect. i had a high school art teacher who made us keep an art journal the whole year. we had to turn it in once a week with four entries. they could be anything. it was an assignment in dedication and commitment. i love looking back on those journals now. it is a document of that period in my life.
it is so easy for me to get carried away in the things that need to be done. when i keep a journal make myself some time for me. they are good for the soul.

good insights, neci.

The content of mine really vary, but they are really "me".
I love the ones that have tons of figure drawing interspersed with written and sketched musings. Often there are pages of notes and "to do's", but that's ok too, as taht reflects what was going on at the time.

Having a fairly regular figure drawing schedule has helped keep me at it.
Tho' not getting out of the house to an office or even the café has diluted the process.

I do need to purchase some new blanks.
