I live outside of America and I am being bold and I am currently writing a story based in America.

I have formed a beautiful location in my story but I am not too sure where in America I could find it, I did stumble across Laguana Beach, CA, its close but doesn't quite resemble what I am looking for.

I have described a park that is semi-light, still visitable during the nights, in the park itself ther eis enough space for dogs to roam in a "park? enclosure? space?" of their own, adjacent there is a walkway, connecting with a small grass area within the park, that area is boundaried off where people can sit and have picnics or sit back on a park bench.

In my story the park intersects with a beach, the park is just behind the beach and the two of them "meet" so to speak. Below is a sketch/legend of the beach, park.

The beach is small, when I say small, there is probably enough room to pack about 30 people and there is not a great deal of sand to sit on, if you measured it lengthwise probably about 17 feet and 165 feet across.

Also, what do sales men and women need to fulfill in their job description. I have my main female character who travels from to two different states for a large sales meet where they learn information about a new product that is out on the market, she has travelled to Idaho and California. If anyone can give me information about sales men and women what they do on a day to day basis I would appreciate that please :)

Tried to attach picture with no success, shall place it in a new post.

Thankyou.

There are several 'pocket beaches' in and around Laguna that would serve as a model of what you're looking for. You might have to re-arrange the parking and put a stairway at the end of your board walk but that is no difficulty. Try a look at this resort. Another location might be The Lodge at Torrey Pines. I haven't been to that one but I've gone diving at Montage and except for the dog park, it matches what you want rather well.

Can't help you with the day-to-day sales life, though.

The resort scene is not what I am after, I searched on the site and couldn't find any outdoor views, however I will go browsing on google maps and see where it takes me along with the sites you have given. Thankyou for taking your time to help.

No prob about the sales questions, I am sure someone else will be bound to help, it was trying to find that damn park that was driving me around the bend, I was going to tell anyone else who was looking that the park/beach didn't have to be exact, but something there about's.

You can invent any place you want. It doesn't have to be a real place. A park as you describe it on the coast of southern California, the coast of Oregon, the coast of Georgia, Michigan, Texas, most anywhere. It's YOUR story and YOUR park.

Basically, sales people learn what a prospect needs, then determine if they have a product or service that will fill that need, then supply all possible information the prospect wants or needs, and finally assisst with the installation, implementation or resupply of the product or service.

The Traveling Salesman/woman's life is repetitive movement in the field, seeing Customers, arranging travel, waiting in airports, wondering if it is safe to stop in Newark for a pepsi or just go on until the neighborhood doesn't look so deadly?

Cell phone calls to and from Customers, Bosses and irregular meals. It does depend upon your expense account. If your boss looks in askance at a $50 meal, there better be a Customer involved. And cover your bar tab in cash and chalk it up to tips and misc.

Sales Conferences can be lavish and a lot of fun, even if it's not all "bonding with your team mates." Generally there is a lot of drink at the good ones. The week long sales conference is filled with new products and new people and yes the same old weary crap you've heard a thousand times.

Depends too on the size of the territory, in small Sales Territory, a few feet can separate you from a lucrative account, that is the province of the old guy that plays a lot of golf and just won't die, so you can take over his territory!

Depends upon the product, Software is sold by slippery geeks who point out the feature rich panorama of their product, not mentioning that others call those features Bugs!

Paint is a commodity and can be sold on the phone, Power plants are sold by working a client for five or ten years, then closing the deal and cashing the commission check in an hour.

Wine salesmen are in a good position if they have a good product, or lots of it as in Gallo. It's easy to put gourmet food with wine to influence the customer, but the salesperson should be careful not to over indulge, you get fat and loose the svelt appeal.

So Product, Territory, Customer Base and at a Sales Conference, the bottom line of the last year better be good or you're eating hot dogs in the conference room and drinks are room temp discount fruit medley soda.

I am not sure if your reply has a hint of sarcasm in it pellso, or if you mean it complimentary wise.

I am attaching a picture in another post so it is more clearer. I can have difficulties explaining.

I think what you're after is Venice Beach. Venice is very big on dog parks, is trendy, eclectic. Has some expensive spots and some dirt cheap spots. Has circus like performers on the boardwalk and tables selling all kinds of merchandise. It has a lot of skateboarders and bicyclists. There are several little "parks" that intersect the famous Venice boardwalk and the beach.

And, most especially, if you've watched a lot of American television or movies, you've undoubtedly seen Venice beach. A lot of filming is done there. You can also find a ton of YouTube videos of Venice beach. It's pretty famous.

Now the exact park you map out doesn't exist--but there's an easy way to get around it. Just say, a "new" dog park in Venice Beach. Which is a kind of short-hand from you to the reader saying, "This dream park doesn't exist, I made it up, but maybe someday it will." ;)

Ah yes... Venice... but I didn't know they had a beach there, just a big sort of sewage swail and everyone speaks Italian.

Why not move the beach somewhat inland and have your story in a quaint little berg in Death Valley? There's plenty of room there and not many (living) people. :)

You can make up anyplace you want, hun. Real locations are not really necessary.

 Oh, haw, haw! There's more than one Venice, yanno . . .

The area around Laguna Beach is marked by cliffs with beaches at the feet between headlands, as VM says there are a few places that are close to what you are describing.

Yes, put it between Laguna Beach and Dana Point, and fudge the description anyway you want as long as there is a 20-30' cliff at the head of the beach.

If you don't want a cliff, put it in Venice Beach, nice and flat there.

Check out the Mission Bay Park area of San Diego.

Michigan, on Lake Michigan..... Fresh water and seems as big as the ocean.
Lots of smallish beaches...and big ones too.

Also went to Cape Cod this past summer.... a few beaches similar there.
Try near South Yarmouth.

I'm really happy with the beach, Venice Beach is extremely close to what I want, lots of lush greeny areas.

The only reason I have asked for a park similar to my description is that all stories require a location, and I need a location, so California is the place.

I am interested in knowing any popular states in America that are known for Sales meets from multiple agencies that are a plane trip away from California, hopefully Idaho is still acceptable.

More info on sale location meets appreciated.

Everyone's advice is soooo appreciated, I can finally make a dint in my story now that I have a start location, many thanks :)

People come from all over the world to have conventions in California. However, Idaho is a very sparsely populated place and it doesn't have a lot of commercial air connections. You have to fly from Boise to Salt Lake City, UT and then you can get to L.A. It's expensive. Except for Las Vegas, Nevada is as bad. All the airlines either go up and down the coast or leapfrog the entire mountain region to Chicago, Atlanta or Minneapolis. It makes things tough for the people in between.

I definitely want to do a flight that is very long which is like going to LA airport to Miami, Florida, is like 7hrs and 45mins by the AA.

I want to avoid CA, my characters are living in that state and this is where they work amongst the big agencies in my story so to speak, I want them to travel abroad and attend other conventions in other staties, so I''m quite happy with Miami, its well populated and a good travel.

And of course, why didn't I think of that NY!!! Chicago IL or NY, I think I will stick with NY as the plane tripp is a good 5 hr journey, its the hub of America I hear and Miami Florida, a lot of activity goes on also.

If anyone agress let me know please.

Chicago, Illinois and New York City, NY. They're about 2.5 hours apart by air, I think. Atlanta, GA is a big convention city and it's as far from L.A. as Chicago is. And then there's Dallas TX.

Um, no. Most long flights from one U.S. coast to the other are like 5 hours unless there is a stop-over or you have to switch flights. Then it can take as long as 9 hours to get from, say, L.A. to New York. But non-stop from L.A. to Miami? About 5 hours.

You might want to avoid sending them to Miami then, because Florida isn't so big a "culture" shock to someone from Venice, California. Both have palm trees, beaches, warm weather, etc. If you send them to a convention in the mid-west in the middle of winter they'll have some "shock" from the difference even if they've done it before. It's December in CA now and the weather's been 70 degrees (F); meanwhile, in the Midwest and back east there's been blizzards and freezing temperatures. You can imagine someone going from jeans, tennis shoes and tee shirts to a parka, gloves, scarves and snowboots.

It'd give your Californian a "fish out of water" feel ;)

If you like that idea, you might consider Minneapolis, Minnesota for the convention. It's got a central airport that is a hub for flights from around the U.S., which makes it appealing because then people can take direct flights to it from most places. A Californian could reach it on a non-stop flight within 3 hours. Lots of snow in the winter. The movie Fargo takes place primarily in Minneapolis. Here's the website for the convention and visitors association.

That's a good suggestion. And 3's right. Minneapolis is cold in the winter. Sometimes the blizzards are so bad that all auto travel is shut down for days. The residents just switch over to snow mobiles and keep on truckin'. Tough folk live in Minnesota.

I have lived in California and my experience of Venice Beach was MUCH different from others. :p (lol - to others - what a circus Venice Beach was and is!) However, I am a little confused. Why do you need a place to fit YOUR description. Why not a) just invent a small beach without locating it or b) do a bit of research and alter YOUR description to fit a real place in America? California isn't the only state with beaches, but it has many and when I lived there I went to lots of little hideaways. :)

Charley, a) I wanted to respect Americans and not seem like a dim-witted outsider who doesn't have a clue about the culture, the life of America etc, I wanted to seem at least a little knowledged :D

California seemed most appropriate as it fits my description almost to the tee for my beach, park scene, I just needed a state where my characters would be living and working and where their work would take them across the state for conventions. I'm really grateful for all the help and I am learning so much about the American lifestyle and culture, makes me want to head over to America and complete my story, however wouldn't consider going for another 2 months as we are in a warmer season at the moment :p
