another stupid question

OMFG. Are we supposed to be writing SEX STORIES? Why am I the last to know?

You guys know I don't write that stuff. Remember the line from Groucho Marx. "If I have to be dirty, I'm not funny."

Doesn't have to be about sex, JJ. You can explain what you like to write about and see if Amy likes that.

we don't have to write sex stories. we can just pretend we're in one ;)

That's why I'd like everyone to open you up to all the fun you can have playing sex games. That's what most of us do, is write sex all day, anyway. This just adds a bit of realism to it all.

Most of us write sex all day?

Guess I missed that memo.

I guess sex was too broad a term. Being Porn/ Romance writers, we touch on varying aspects of the sexual act and it's trappings.

And the reference to writing sex 'all day' may be a bit broad too.

But I don't even always write romance, so sex isn't a part of the story at all -- not even hints.

Someone said sex was boring?

WRITING about sex is boring. Ok, look. How many ways to fuck ar there? Standing up. Cowgirl, Missionary, Doggy, Side Saddle, etc. Once you've written all of them, what else is there? That's the point where you turn to the other elements of a story like plot, character development, story structure and those things that make a story readable. Then you find out which is more important - writing a good story or writing sex.

ITA. Exactly why I just can't write a stroker. I'm just impressed that I managed a story where everyone was human

well, writing about it? see for me it would only get better. allowing me to explore all sorts of fantasies i have, without leaving my comfort zone.
But what works for you may not work for others. :)

That's the point where I turned too.

Sure, I have room to improve. Who doesn't? But I look back at the first story I did without sex as a huge step for me. That's when I understood all those other elements you mention. Up to then, my knowledge of writing was minimal. Thanks to a few awesome people who spent hours running through exercises with me, I was able to improve and found what worked.

To be honest, Bianca, of all 45 stories I have posted on Lit there are 4 that actually have sex in them. Two Halloween nut busters (I'm not really happy with them) and two that only indicate the characters had sex (much happier).

A long time ago I came to the understanding the the reader has a mind and his own fantasies. I let him/her fill in the blanks. Do I really care whether Reginald bangs Martha doggie style or missionary?

I deleted a lot of my old stuff, though there are a few yet. Mostly I left them as reminders of how far I've come since those first days.

Letting the reader imagine what's in those blanks works for me too. :)

Listen to these ladies Amy, they know what they're talking about. I'm just an old lech who runs around spewing filth and depravity at every turn, so don't listen to me. I'm just here for amusement purposes only. My stories are nothing but sex, with a believable amount of reality to them, as well, so you're getting good advice already. See, I knew helping others out was part of what we share here.

Guess I'm still a little behind with that. I wrote stories for years that just implies sex, or had sex that was very vanilla. Now I enjoy delving into a bit of everything. Still needs a storyline though, and it has to make some sense that those particular characters are anywhere in the vicinity of each other with their clothes off.
