One of the reasons that learning can be so painful and difficult is that it requires making mistakes. Science tells us that, as an effective evolutionary adaptation, memory is cemented by adrenalin-stoked experience. Most of us are understandably reluctant to intentionally take risks that may result in embarrassment or harm but which are also inextricably intertwined with learning. If scars make a person massive, then I must be huge. I have many of them and they each represent something different. Sometimes, they resulted from an accident. Sometimes, they resulted from a fight. Sometimes, they came because I inflicted them on myself. All of them are meaningful and remind me that I have truly lived and risked things.
