Here's a famous quote from Will Shakespear: Scars remind us that the past was real...

What literary genius does this inspire in you?

Physical scars may fade, scars on the mind linger until our last breath.

One of the reasons that learning can be so painful and difficult is that it requires making mistakes. Science tells us that, as an effective evolutionary adaptation, memory is cemented by adrenalin-stoked experience. Most of us are understandably reluctant to intentionally take risks that may result in embarrassment or harm but which are also inextricably intertwined with learning. A society that does not reward the acceptance of intelligent risks is on the road to stagnation and ossification. Recipients of Darwin Awards are victims of a combination of their own lack of memories, poor judgment and a dash of bad luck.

"Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear — not absence of fear. Except a creature be part coward, it is not a compliment to say it is brave; it is merely a loose misapplication of the word."

-Samuel Clemens ( Mark Twain )
Pudd'nhead Wilson and Those Remarkable Twins
New York, 1894.

My favourite:-

He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian.'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.'
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day.

“Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.”--Kahlil Gibran

If scars make a person massive, then I must be huge. I have many of them and they each represent something different. Sometimes, they resulted from an accident. Sometimes, they resulted from a fight. Sometimes, they came because I inflicted them on myself. All of them are meaningful and remind me that I have truly lived and risked things.

Unfortunately, I managed to accrue all of mine after I got married. And no, HM had nothing to do with them.
