A fitting tribute.

Thanks for the link, El. I worked on Wall Street in the late 60s and watched the WTC rise from deep hole to twin towers. And I watched, in horror and sadness, as they came down. Not so much for the buildings as for those inside, people like I and many friends had been, and people who all deserved a better fate than that. It is fitting that steel from the Towers be recycled for the struggle to ensure that such an atrocity never be allowed to happen again.

It is that, but I am a bit puzzled. I always thought that battleships were named after states.
It's not a Battleship; it's an assault ship - troop carrier.

But there was (maybe still is in mothballs) a Battleship named New York - it's a State as well as a city.

New York is a state.

I know, but this is not a battleship. Maybe its official name is USS New York City.

No, it's full name is the USS New York. It's either the seventh or eighth ship of that name.

If you'd bothered to read the link in the thread I posted several weeks ago, you'd know that.

Anyone else notice the radar stealth elements built into the sides, front, and superstructure of this ship?

Egad! and....and... you're CANADIAN! Damn you, NYT! for showing photos of secret technology. That aids our enemies!

Handsome vessel, in any case. :)
Sorry, Huckleman, that's "yer Canajan, eh?" And remember if we weren't here, it wouldn't only be Sarah Palin who would have the Ruskies as neighbors!

I believe that the term is now 'capital ships' as the BB class is obsolete. Missile subs are also named after states, these days, and given the size of the new amphibious assault transport class, giving it a state's name is perfectly apt.

I took one glance at the picture and thought "Hey, whatä's that awesome new skyscap... oh, it's the ship's tower. Well they should biuld a scraper like that, it would look totally awesome in the NY skyline."
