Secret Santa Interest Thread

Yeah, it's that time of the year again...

Despite (or maybe because) all that's been going on in the AH lately, I'd love to continue the Secret Santa tradition that was established several years ago. Last year's wonderful host, CrimsonMaiden, unfortunately does not have time this year, so I volunteered to get the ball rolling as I've had a lot of fun the past three years I've participated in the exchange and would hate to see it die out.

Time is pretty short, so I'm starting this thread to see if there's any interest to do Secret Santa this year. If there is, I'll start an official thread right away, so if you think you might want to participate please post right away. This is not a commitment yet, just a way for me to get a general idea of the level of interest. I you've got any questions, feel free to ask them here and now.



For those who have never participated in the AH Secret Santa exchange, here's how it works:

Once I post the official thread, you need to sign up and send me a PM containing your mailing address and a few personal facts and preferences - to give your Santa a few ideas of what they might get you. I'll post more specifics about this. You will later pick a number and receive the details of another participant to whom you'll be a Secret Santa. Gifts have to be sent by a deadline, and we'll pick a date to open the gifts we've received and be delighted.

It's great fun, and a wonderful way to get to know your fellow AH members a bit better.

What should the price limit be for gifts? I believe the limit was set at $15 the last two years, should we keep it?

Which date should be opening date? Again, this was December 18th the last two years of Secret Santa. Should we move the date or keep it?

What should be the deadline to send gifts? Last year this was November 22, so overseas gifts would have enough time to reach their destination. Change or keep?

Unless my memory fails me, those dates, etc., seemed to work really well.

As this is my first time, could you be so kind as to explain how it works, so I have a better idea of what we're doing here.

Everyone that participates is assigned a number. You pick a number, and become that person's Secret Santa.

You get that person a gift (within the guidelines listed above), and on opening day, your gift-ee opens their gift, and finds out who their Santa is.

Great fun, and a really nice way to pull everyone together.

So it's not necessarily a boy-girl exchange. I'll get the identity of my recipient and I guess their address and send them something based on their preferences, for the amount chosen.

Yes, exactly. If it's someone you know well, you may not need the preferences of course, they're just to help you out if you're a little stuck when it comes to the gifting.

Price limit has worked well before and it is a little flexible. I think it is a reasonable amount.

December 18th seems good to me


And you don't want it any later than the 22nd November really if you can help it, because I know from experience that postage can be a pain in the bum at that time of year!

The Secret bit is that you don't know who your Santa will be and you don't pick a name at first you pick a number.
