I was reading about surrogate mothers and seeing some really conflicting information: some people are saying there is a strong recent demand for women to bear children for gay couples, and to a lesser extent for single men of any sexuality, on top of the long-standing demand for surrogates by infertile heterosexual couples. I was thinking about it and realized I would really really like to be a surrogate.
But then I looked at 3 different online applications to become a surrogate, and none of them even let you fill out the application if you haven't already had a baby. WTH?
Guess there must not be that much demand if they can be so picky. Why would a woman who already has children of her own want to have more but give them up? It's the women like me, nearing thirty but not well-off or in a long term relationship, who most want to be a surrogate so they can experience childbearing before they are too old.
The only somewhat positive thing I saw is that because gay couples aren't accepted as clients in some surrogate programs, there have sprung up informal gay-friendly surrogacy matchmaking organizations which allow anyone to apply and each client can choose which traits are important to filter out and which they don't care about.
But before I get my hopes up too much and run around filling out applications, I wanted to make this poll to see how small a % of gay men are actually interested in having a child via a surrogate mother.
