Is the AH Forum a washout?

Posting to friends is 'inane'?

I've posted on that thread a time or two. Most of what I saw was - Last! Next post - Last! Next post - I'm last!

And there is always the comment - post to this thread, get your post count up in a hurry! Not a great deal of discussion, yes?

I haven't been there in awhile, perhaps it has changed. At any rate, I did not intend offense, unlike your post directed at me.

It seems as if I'm not the only prickly one here.

Never mind, 'kay?

This really proves my point.

There is so much crap being flung around here, so much anger, people immediately take offense with the slightest thing posted.

I don't post in that thread, or pretend to be naked at some party, or any of those other mindless threads. I can play games elsewhere - that's not what I come here for.

You're not prickly, people are just being ego-centric, and seeing themselves in every little remark.

I totally agree about those just posting 'last', etc. That part is silly. I'm not one who does that though. I go there to chat with friends, regardless of the thread title.

If you reward a misbehaving child you get more bad behavior.

Look what's happened in less than two pages on this thread.
JBJ couldn't stand it and took a swipe at Ususal Suspects.
Got no response so he took a shot at Stella and me.
Got no respoinse so he went into his racial bit.
He got a reply so he then got worse.
Got a reply from Cloudy, who was one he hoped would bite, and he posted a hundred words or so.
If Cloudy, replies again, he will likely launch into the Indian bit trying to really set her off.

Regardless of what happens from here on in this thread, he is already sitting in the corner pulling on his little pee pee with his eyes rolled back. He got what he wanted.

Teach, dang it!

I didn't want to think about his little pee pee.

Brain bleach!

A forum is the sum or it's threads and posts. No more no less. There are two ways to change the tone - increase the amount of threads and posts that you like, or decrease the amount of threads and posts you don't like.

I have fairly good control over the former, cause that only involves me and what I post. The latter is like herding cats. Cats on caffeine.

As a noob, I understand how disappointing it is to see something you enjoyed so much, get over-run by trolls. I used to go into the feedback comments, but that is troll central. Now I contact the writer personally and tell them how I felt about their story. I believe there are lots of other noobs, like me, who would love to join in the room's jovial atmosphere of old and participate in threads. The problem I have, and I'm sure others as well have, is that we don't know what it was like. It sounds like a great time was had by all and many friends were made. There seems to be a hidden agenda to get through to be accepted by the regs, like yourselves, and we have no idea what it is. IMHO , it should be the ones who have established this forum who welcome the noobs like me and show us the ropes on how it all works. Can't play the game without knowing the rules. I've been in the penalty box already for screwing up, but I want to join in what was and make it what is again.

It just makes me weary.

I don't wish to argue. And I shouldn't have to stick to a flirting thread just to be able to NOT argue in the Authors' Hangout.

Okay. Input from someone who hasn't been here quite a year.

I lurked for about 6 months before joining. Before that I lurked off and on for a few years. It was about March/April of 2008 that I started really lurking.

If the AH had been then, what it is now, I would have never joined. I would have closed out the window and never thought twice about not coming back. The AH is not what it was a year and a half ago, or even what it was when I joined at the end of November of last year. If the AH had been the way it is now, and I never joined, I would have never made the friends I have. I would have never met my Sir. I would still be in a dangerous and horrible relationship afraid to leave for fear that I would have nothing and no one to care. The truth is, I would probably be dead by now. *sigh*

The AH helped me keep my sanity. The people here, some very particular ones, most especially my Sir and Dianthus, kept reminding me that there was a way out. That I had them. They not only said it, they did something about it. They showed me how I could get out and have stuck by me the whole way. Others have too.

I post sometimes in the Last thread. Not to get my post count up, but to say a quick hello to others. Sometimes I only post last, but often that is because I'm not feeling up to par and don't want to get into a discussion. I post in the Naked Party thread, because that was one of the first ever threads I read while lurking and also posted to when I joined. I made good friends, real friends from that thread. I won't apologize for posting to what some may consider "Fluff" threads.

I have posted in some of the political threads, but I rarely do as it's mostly people sniping at one another, unwilling to listen to "The other side of the story" as it were. If I post in a political thread, I try to make sure what I am saying has substance, or can be backed up.

Is the AH a washout? As it stands at this moment, with no intervention from the Forum Admins, I think it is fast approaching that point. If the Admins would finally take some notice, about such things as the very real racism and personal bashing of others who disagree with "us" whomever, "us" is, if they would finally listen to the people who use this forum, and would implement some basic changes, such as a moderator, putting political threads in their own forum or sub-forum...AH could become a place where writers could once again begin to share their ideas, their knowledge, their hopes, dreams and fears about writing, about the process, etc.

So, that is my $0.02. Take it for what it is worth. To some, it won't be worth a plug nickle.

I like cats.

I do need to contribute more, you're right. Maybe between shows.

Real life is a bitch.

Is a plug nickel some new kinda anal sexual toy? ;)

Writing in the AH

I post at least six writing threads a year.

Each of those threads lasts at least a month with frequent contributions, questions, answers and advice.

They are the support threads for the themed contests. If you read through them you might find that the Authors' hangout hasn't changed that much.

In the support threads we still moan about the rating system and votes; about trolls; about sweeps; about the difficulty of completing a story; writer's block; word count; stories that are too short or too long and above all the fickleness of readers.

And I still run the Authors' Hangout Last Place (tm) Contest for each themed contest. The winners might not be wholly delighted to win such a rare distinction but the "winning" stories are usually well worth a read despite their low rating.

Many of us in the Authors' Hangout still write for the contests even if the consequences of entering a story can be an emotional rollercoaster.

There are so many really great people around here. I, for one, hope that you all make an effort. I know it's hard when things change, people you love move on, and you miss them. I'm really sad I didn't get to know all the great folks who built this place up. I'm sad when I go read the Story Discussion Circle and the experienced, long-term posters are no longer active--and that's just in this year for many.

I know I'm not the intellectual powerhouse of the original group and many of us newbies are here to learn because we aren't experienced writers, or whatever, though some are, they're just afraid to post. You who remain might be the new structural iron-works of this place: the new old-guard with the knowledge base newbies need to learn and grow around.

I hope you don't leave and let the bullies take complete control of the schoolyard. :rose:

I came to the A/H after posting a story to the main website. I read the writerly threads (and still do and enjoy posting to them as well as the political threads) I landed on the Last thread. My time on the board has been short, but in that short time I have made friendships that will last a lifetime.

I don't consider anyones posts inane or insulting, I have no one on ignore and don't consider anyone on this board to be a troll as seems to be the case with some. Has there been an attack made here? I don't think so, seems some want to qualify there reasons for leaving by blaming others for there own bitterness, instead of enjoying the many varied topics on the board.

I have no one on ignore, I enjoy opening the threads and reading the responses, some I comment on some I don't.

Liars right.

Is the A/H a washout? I say the A/H is just fine! If you're tired of being here pack your shit, but quit trying to blame the unhappiness that some feel on others.

Yeah, but even participation in those threads has dropped off a lot. Somebody has to bump them every day or so, or they're in the wasteland of page 2.

Nude day this year: 285 replies. Last year: 264. 618 two years ago.
Earth day: 407->327->1021->1368
Valentines: 458->481->1449->2597
Winter: 304->306->2064
Halloween: 505->1226->1698

The How-To contest had 893 posts in 2006!

It's a perfect example of what's happened around here the last couple of years.

I am putting my money where my mouth is. ;)

I have started a Writer's Thread Index:

Writer's Thread Index

Please post any threads that you consider writing type and it will be added to the list.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

But on this very thread JBJ made some racist and insulting comments. Didja miss it?

Different people have different tolerance levels for hate, I suppose.

EDDIE

Yuh gotta admit I know how to jerk your chain, huh?

But the bigger problem is youre not interesting or clever or even attractive. Very few of the Usual Suspects have the right stuff to create stimulating threads, and 95% of what SARAH starts are her RUM-DUM pissers.

Why dont you guys get together, come up with some ideas for threads, and give um a whirl. It would certainly be different from the 24/7 pissing & moaning you do.
