Uck. What a loser. He/she got confused so you get a low rating? WTF is that?

I'll go read your story and give it the rating I know it deserves, but depending on how many votes you have it might not help. I have a story that got bombed and no explanation was given. The high votes are bringing it up .1 at a time. Sucks cause I was #2 in the top list for the month in the genre.

Anyway I know this is the same ol' and it might be hard but don't let it bug you. Trolls are nasty. That's their job. Says nothing about you as a writer

As you jolly well know, our readership varies from the intellectual to the psychotic. Putting a story up is akin to launching a boat...it may float and it may sink...and the trolls have hammers and drills.

He (or she) probably ran across the story in the New Stories listing. Then, when he saw the reference to a previous story, rather than clicking on the link to all my stories, which is just under the title, and reading the previous episode, he got pissed off. Who can figure trolls.

Sir, I clicked open your thread when I saw the word troll. As many of you know I don’t like the way so many of LITEROTICA’S authors continually demean our reading public. This in spite of the fact they live for the viewing numbers and the positive comments.

Was he some evil TROLL or was he simply giving you his opinion as a reader?

Back in 2005 I got a very similar comment.

In my case I suggested at the end of a story (even though it was a story that quite legitimately was a standalone story) that I was planning a sequel.

The reader advised me in no uncertain terms that this was unacceptable and that I should have labeled the story “Chapter 1” so that readers like he (or she? I can’t remember) would know before clicking open the story what awaited him.

He told me he gave me a “1” and he hoped that his admonishment would make me learn my lesson. He said he never opened multi chapter stories. PERIOD. He had a couple of reasons for this: the huge number of stories on the site that were never finished was one (we’ve all come across these – I myself have a couple up that I’ve to date not finished), and another was his preference for reading the complete story at once versus waiting perhaps months or years for the rest.

When I thought about it his points were quite legitimate.

Still, at the time I thought he was a bit of a prick for giving me a “1”. But I did learn my lesson! And in the months that followed my “1” I heard from four or five other authors that they’d been similarly advised and treated. Quite simply there are a group of our readers who’d like to be warned in advance if a story is not complete as posted.

I will concede that your advising them in the first paragraph should have been sufficient for most but I must say I’m not surprised that there’d be some who’d still be irritated and let you know it. And with you being a veteran LITEROTICAN my guess is this is not the first time you’ve heard of this.

Does this mean you always must advise the reader in advance? Of course not! I still often leave the reader hanging. For a variety of reasons. But when I do I accept that some will be pissed off enough to give me a “1”. C’est la vie…

The big problem with threads like yours (these innumerable “Worst Comment” threads that seem to pop up weekly in both AHland and SFworld) is that they just breed more contempt for our readers.

Hell, even the most popular story in the history of LITEROTICA has received its share of “bad comments”. I just smile, send them a thank you for their interest and move on.

I think the comment was legitmate. I think giving a story an automatic 1 for any one issue (this being one that just crop up form the storytelling or presentation of that particular story) is what is trollish.

I agree, God help me, with scouries. At least the guy has criteria for judging a story. Or one criterion, perhaps. I tend to think of a troll as a reader who just gives out 1's for the hell of it.

My problem is with the whole concept of “TROLL” or “TROLLISH”. Trolls according to you people are invariably “readers” or “commenter’s” who give 1’s. And these so called “TROLLS” are always described with other derogatory adjectives – like ‘stupid’ or ‘moronic’ or ‘illiterate’ or …

By AHland definition someone who gives a “1” is a TROLL and an idiot.

But what about the “5” givers. Those people who just give perfect scores (I could easily list at least ten of you who’ve at one time or another have proudly posted that you never give less than a “4”). Are they TROLLS? Are they described as morons? NOT LIKELY!

And the readers who just post gushing comments? Who jump from story after story (especially when a contest is on) praising everyone to the sky without any hint of critical comment. Whose comments leave you shaking your head knowing they haven’t read the story in question. TROLLS? Hardly.

You know sir, LITEROTICA statistics are pretty clear – our stories (and I include mine in this) are invariably scored too high. Even the QUEEN concedes this – it’s one of the reasons they changed the voting system last year. She and MANU were trying to bring at least a little credibility back to the stories rating.

Quite frankly there’s not an author on this site who couldn’t use a hell of a lot more critical comments.

And we won’t get them if, every time someone has the temerity to criticize us, we start one of these whining threads and call the critic a trollish, illiterate moron. Dear Mr Box, I simply ask that you try to remember just how many of these complaint threads you’ve seen over your years here. Hundreds? Thousands? Yes yours is just one small thread - but its the cumulative effect of these threads that continues to widen the gulf between we authors and reality.
