The Summer Lovin' Contest Support Thread

Good News/Bad News

The good news. My story "Sunburn Treatment" was really hammered by someone who didn't like it. The score is now up to 4.53 or something (up from like, 3.6).

The bad news, I have two stories in the contest and as the Hoover continues, it is looking SO likely neither one will have 25 votes that make it through the hoover.

My story is sitting still now

Not many new votes for a week or so now...happy with score though and number or reads...but how do I get more votes???

dickjohnson69 - You can't get more votes now.

The contest ends today and the site owners are currently sweeping the votes that were cast to bring down the scores of 'opponents', or multiple 5's to raise the scores of someone's own story, or their favorite writer. If this 'sweep' is true to form, you'll hopefully end up with a 4.6x score and a vote tally in the 60s. Not high enough to win, but very respectable, congrats.

Lost a lot of votes last night, but the avg. went up. Lot 70 votes the final time. Congrads to the winners.

Thank you!

Many thanks for the note of congratulations. The sweep took away 48 votes from 'Ex Libris', down from 216 to 168, for a magnificent .02 increase in score! 'Morton Magic', never in the running, lost 29, but gained .09. I'm happy.

I'm surprised Ex Libris did so well, at 5 Lit pages, and an author's note warning that it was both long and slow! Interestingly, although 'Ex Libris' was posted on the third day of the contest, and 'Morton Magic' in the dying hours - just before midnight, UK time, on the final day - the later story, only 2 Lit pages, had one and a half times as many views, 15k as opposed to 9k for the earlier. I assume that's because more people will read a shorter story.

My own congratulations to the first and second. I'm more than happy with third place.

Alex

Good to see you again and congrats.

Congratulations to the winners :D

Here's my last place entery, after the Hoover finished gobbling up all the 1 votes.

4.63 x 19 / 25 = 3.52

Congrats to the winners.

I ended with a 4.48, even though the score never rose over 3.90 during the contest.
After the sweep I had 31 votes left.

Congrats, Alex. A well-deserved win.

I copied this off the submission thread:

- All submissions must be stand-alone stories created for this contest theme. We will not accept individual chapters of a larger work submitted separately. If you have a multi-chaptered contest-themed submission, please submit all chapters together as one story submission.

I take that to mean one submission, be nice to have it clarified. Anyone else have an opion?

From Kitty Mama hersel:

Unfortunately, we're not allowing stories to be submitted individually as chapters, even if they're submitted at the same time. All chapters must be submitted as one file.

As you know, Special Contest submissions get special treatment in that they are not only posted faster than other submissions, but are also posted at the top of the submission list. This is so that contest entrants have a better chance of accruing the necessary 25 votes in the short time period. Unfortunately, some authors were taking advantage of this and breaking stories into parts unnecessarily so they could be at the top of the New list every day. Readers were complaining. Thus, we have made this rule.

Readers have always let us know that they generally enjoy longer-length stories, but prefer them broken into bite-sized chapters. That's cool, and we have no intention of disallowing chaptered works in normal contests or anywhere else on the site. We're even working on a way for chaptered series to have an overall vote score in addition to the individual chapter score. However, for special contests, we do not accept individual chapter submissions. It's a blanket rule, and we feel making exceptions will lead to problems.

I don't know where my confusion came from, but I thought you could submit chapters so long as the story was complete and all chapters were submitted together. Obviously, that's not the case.

So I guess my Halloween contest story is gonna be a really long one . . . .

Congrats to the winners. I haven't posted anything for a contest in awhile so I can't even qualify for lowest score, although can't get much lower than zero. :D

Congrats!

Congratulations to the winners. This being my first contest I wasn't sure where I was running in the pack. The final hoover took out 13 votes and jumped my score by .08. I'd've loved to have more comments but I'm pretty happy with the end results overall (for a first try anyway).

Congratulations to David Watts and Manyeyed hydra and Alex de Kok.

My entry lost about ten votes in the last few days of being Hoovered, and its score improved by about .13 points. It ended up with a respectable score, although there is no H, and probably never will be. Not a big deal, because I write for my own pleasure and that of others.

Hope that part of the plan is to use the overall score for toplists/monthly contests, to remove at least a little of the advantage chapters have over one-shots.

The blanket rule is exactly why I haven't added the "Ep. xx" to the two LST3Ks that have ended up in contests. I don't want to be the one that people are pointing at and erroneously saying "But that's a chapter story, why can't I do mine!"

I just add the episode listing to the title after the contest is over. Which I need to go do for the new one.

Congrats to the winners.

I'm somewhat flabbergasted at my results - 3 entries, 3 Hs. That's totally out of character for my writing, since I usually go for the off-kilter, imperfect scenario, inspired by the failures of real life rather than the perfection of fantasy.

I got nothin' for Halloween, but that's okay. I should probably quit while I'm ahead.
