Always wondered who got to name our planet, Earth. All it conjures up is dirt. Why didn't we get a cool name like Venus, or Mars, or Saturn or some other God name, or the like. If we could change it, what would you like it to be called and what would our inhabitants be called.
eg: Earth=Earthlings

We could call it "home" and we could be called homebuddies.

Just be glad you're not American Indian. Then you would find that you live on the back of a giant turtle.

We could call it the planet of Junkion... representing the Junkions, where we have conversation about how big your "Junk" is or looking at women and with comments about how much "Junk is in her trunk". Whadayathink?

The turtle's name is Irving. So we'd be living on planet Irving. :)

Um... you never heard of Tellus?
or Gaia, or Terra, or...

Take your pick. Every language has it's own word for our own private dirtball in space.

Almost every language equates the planet with dirt/land, just almost every language's word for the native speakers of that language means "people."

So we should think of ourselves as dirt? I thought we were better than that. Weren't we created in God's image? Does that mean God is dirt too? I just thought a better name to describe our planet and its people was in order. Gaia would make us Gaians? Too much conflict there. Terra would make us Terrieans, which is too similar to terriers. I might be a dog sometimes, but I don't want to be called one, lol.

Terra is Latin for "dirt." Terracotta means; "cooked dirt." "Terriers" are called that because so many of the breeds run their prey to earth, diving into burrows after rats, weasels and rabbits-- and badgers, called "dach"in German, which is where "dachshunds" get their breed name from.

Earthlings are called "Terrans" in many a science fiction novel...

Still hate the thought of being associated with dirt. I thought Terra Cotta meant red earth? no?

we may be associated with it, but it's not what we're made of. We are made from carbon, amino acids, amongst others, and a little electrical activity to get it all going. So belonging to something we aren't akin to is misleading. We stand on Terra Firma and we may be buried in it when we die, but made from it we're not.

It's okay, honey, you don't have to be made of dirt if you don't want to be...;)

Me, I love the stuff, and am proud to be associated with it!

"smiles back at Stella. I guess I am a little dirty at times" LOL

Yes he does, Stella..

And God proceeded to form the man from the dust of the ground and to blow the breath of life into his nosterils and the man became a living soul.

Genesis 2:7

There was (is?) a tv show called "Big Blue Marble' about the planet. We could call it 'Blue' and we'd be 'Blueys'.

Nah...Bluebell 7's nic is 'Bluey'. Scratch that.

We could call it 'Marble' and we'd be 'Marbleites'.

Nope...sounds like we're made of rock. Hmmmm...

The planet's green as well. We could be 'Greenie's'.

Feh! The Enviros have that as a nic. Lessee now...

I guess the old Sci-Fi word 'Terra' is still valid...and we'd be 'Terran's'.

Then when the little green dudes land in their souped-up hubcaps and say "Take us to your leader, Terran", we won't say "Huh?"

:D
