The Summer Lovin' Contest Support Thread

Is anybody claiming last place, yet? Shout out if you need a vote.

Hey Babs, I'm not claiming last place but I'll post my score and see what happens. How is your story doing? I voted on it just didnt leave a comment.

Thanks. I love the people down south. I already voted for you--one per customer around here. The last I looked, I had 111 votes and the score is about 4.15 or so. I haven't even heard anybody complaining about votes being swept away, yet. Is that something still to look forward to?

I can't tell I'm not the obsessive check your votes till you erase the letters on your keyboard type, maybe, yep that's me one vote per customer, man there was a lot of entries! Anything for Halloweeny?

Mine: 3.48 62 10393

A respectable 4.37, so far.

And I'm pleasantly surprised to see it's caused a boost in the number of reads and votes of my other stuff too, and dragged their averages up a little bit too.

No nasty comments yet, which I'm also pleasantly surprised about.

For Halloween, I'm thinking about a poem in broad dense Scots dialect. Wonder what the trolls would make of something they could barely understand? Or the other readers, at that! Must be worth a go just for the novelty value!

Amazing things happen around here! I just posted my votes and received one more, but the score went down. Go figure.

Halloween? Haven't thought about writing anything, yet. I need it to be a little cooler before I can think about it. Its my birthday, so I hope some of the authors write about fun stuff and not all gloom and gore. I've always had a happy birthday.

Gah! I can adjust to the reality I have no chance at an H--too many people just don't like my recounting, but goddamnit-to-hell, I only have 5k reads! Do they not like the title or my name or something? What did I do to deserve the fewest reads? Is it still my Halloween boob-eating piece that has everyone so wary? I promise I don't write like a psycho all the time (and I don't even feel like a psycho most of the time)!

Just read dickjonson's story. Strange. No option to leave a comment.

Some people decide that the discouraging factor to trolls of not having all the world view the wit of their venomous spittle spewed all over your story is worth losing some of the positive feedback that they might otherwise pick up with a public comment board.

It isn't nearly as fun for the trolls if only one person sees what they typed with one hand while sitting naked in a beanbag chair eating cheesy-poofs.

I believe most trolls, at least those who one-bomb me, don't leave a comment. Some do, but most don't.

The entertaining ones always do. ;)

I figure at least a good percentage of one-bombs are other authors trying to sabotage the competition. But that's just a theory.

Heh... I used to watch the first page of the toplist for Sci-Fi/Fantasy get bombed about every two weeks, moving authors like John Evans, Llama, and Mack down into the middle of the pack, with the same tales bubbling to the top every time. The pattern was so obvious that a report and a couple of examples was enough to track down the offenders, and the Hoover usually took them out the next day.

I'm sure that other authors contribute, but I'm of the mind that rabid elements of the fanbase are as much/more to blame, whether encouraged or not. I base that on having to tell more than a few of my readers to stop multi-voting mine, and a couple of them to stop bombing others who "shouldn't be rated higher than me" Little did they know that some of the people they were bombing were some of my favorite writers.

Nah, they're getting smarter. It's the 4-bombs now :(

I definitely think you're on to something... To the best of my knowledge I haven't had any 1-bombing trolls, but multiple someones sure think I'm mediocre. :) I'm not saying I disagree, just whining. I'm about to start working on my Halloween story, just to have something else to focus on.

Just as a point of curiousity, I know that the last day to submit was, well Yesterday now, but when do votes stop being counted for contest purposes?

omg! :~ my lit cherry just broke :nana:

Congratulations, I think.

I wonder who took it?

Only another 69 posts and you can get an avatar. Only another 969 and you can choose your own title. Only another 10,000 or so and you'll count as being as obsessed as most of us are...

Update! 09-10-09 9:00am EST. To the best of my knowledge there have been no major sweeps. I promised I let you know since I usually get hit pretty hard because of the large volume of votes. Here's mine:

Votes 383 Reads 10517 Romance (English) 09/04/09 approved
Public Comments: 21

No new commentsw in the last couple of days. Reads going up slowly.
Good luck to all who wrote stories. They should have all been posted by now.

I wouldn't call such a vote a "bomb." I would call it an honest expression of opinion. Of course, it does lower a rival's score, but the score on that particular story might deserve to be lowered.

Just goes to show . . .

. . . I should have given it one more read-through before submitting.

Small errors can be a pain

Liked your story but consider having an editor or proofreader on your next submissions. Sometimes the little errors are the most annoying - MRS F pulls up in a VW bug in the parking lot but takes him home in a Mercedes :)
Looking forward to more

Yup, yup. :p This story is an example of what happens when your characters take over and change the plot.

Still, it's got a decent score and plenty of votes, so I'm not complaining.
