...as I personally call them. I don't participate much, since it feels like jumping awkwardly into the middle of a really long ongoing conversation. But they take up such a major space of the first page of the AH that I got to ask for some clarification.

I click on them now and then without getting any real grip on them, other than that they are all "PING" threads. You send a PING, an "I am here" out into the void. And if you're lucky, you get a proverbial "Yes, we know" back.

But specifically, what is the difference between:

The Author's Hangout Vending Machine
The last person to post here wins...
The Naked Party Thread
Isolated Blurt Thread
The More than a blurt thread, prose, poetry and manic tirades
ABSTRUSIONS
The "I Didn't Get Laid Today" Thread (ok, that one seems to stay pretty much on topic. sexual frustration is one helluva motivator. :D )
Ed Teach's Vanity Thread

and

What's your mood today

?

Because whenever I open them, they seem to contain pretty much the same thing.

Not saying they should go away or anything. If they make people happy, god bless.

But can a confused brother get a guidebook?

author's vending machine is a game.

Last person to post is a game. Kinda taking turns to see who will be the last to post.

What's your mood. Sometimes it is a game, but sometimes it is a quick way to let others know if you are in a good or bad headspace without having to go into long detail.

Isolated Blurt thread is similar to Mood thread, but you can just blurt out whatever is on your mind at the moment, and it doesn't have to make sense to anyone.

The Naked Party thread is a hangout of sorts. Similar in some ways to Abs Hangout, but also different. Different people visit the two different one's. Sometimes I go to one or the other. Often both. I got to know many people from the Naked thread when I got here, so it holds a special place for me.

More than a blurt... is a place that Gi_Venus started and it is mostly her thoughts for the day, but some of us also post a few things there, but mostly encourage or support her.

Ed's vanity thread is for attention. (Not saying that in a bad way...I think it's kinda fun)

That's the gist of them.

They permit folks (who want to do that) to make brief connections. Harmless, I think and apparently meaningful those feeding them.

They permit people to make friends with other people who are too far away for personal contact except on very rare occasions, like Litogethers.

I can't speak for the other threads, but Naked was started at a time when everyone was harping and attacking. The mood had been black for some time and I hate to see all that ugliness. So, in order to give haven to those who wanted a place to connect where there was no such unpleasantness, Naked was born. It has a few rules, among them being "No anger, pain or sadness". It seemed to work because there is little or no harping on it. What really amazes me, though, is how long it's lasted. I had no idea it would catch on so.

There is a strange dynamic going on the thread. Everyone there becomes an instant friend to all those who visit regularly. Almost everybody who has posted there comes back to post again. The people there are very welcoming.

It's an open-topic thread. Usually people share bits of their lives while discussing writing and creativity, engaging in flirtatious conversation, sharing bear's recipes, creating the occasional skit (go back to a section of the thread in 2008 where the gang concocted a scheme about a tax collector trying to shut down the party palace--don't ask ) or just plain enjoying each other's company. It's a place to find support and just be who you want to be.

It's just a thread.

Figures. Twitter gives me the heebie-jeebies.
