International Friendship Day

Celebrations take place on the first Sunday of August every year. The tradition of dedicating a day in honor of friends began in US in 1935. Gradually the festival gained popularity and today Friendship Day is celebrated in large number of countries. On this day people spend time with their friends and express love for them. Exchange of Friendship Day Gifts like flowers, cards and wrist bands is a popular tradition of this occasion.

The United States Congress, in 1935, proclaimed the first Sunday of August as National Friendship Day. Since then, celebration of National Friendship Day became an annual event. The noble idea of honoring the beautiful relationship of friendship caught on with the people and soon Friendship Day became a hugely popular festival.

Following the popularity and success of Friendship Day in US, several other countries adopted the tradition of dedicating a day to friends. Today, Friendship Day is enthusiastically celebrated by several countries across the world. In 1997, the United Nations named Winnie the Pooh as the world's Ambassador of Friendship.

Many friends wish each other with exchange of gifts and cards on this day. "Friendship bands" are very popular in India. With the advent of social networking sites, friendship day is also being celebrated online. The commercialization of the Friendship Day celebrations has led to some dismissing it as a "marketing gimmick".

OK, it is now after midnight here, so that means Friendship Day is over. You're all a bunch of &%()$%&), not a damn one of you posted.

I'm going to find new friends. Don't even try to get back into my good graces. Ya bunch yahoos!:p

Belated Happy Friendship Day Cathleen!! Since I have very few of them these days, I do appreciate the friends that are willing to stick with me. May you have an abundance of people you can call friends. :rose:

Thank you, Arotico, it's always good to have another friend. Welcome to Lit.:rose:

Now, some people will come in (maybe, at least I hope) and say they are a friend but it's too late -- they're done! :cattail:

Waah waah waahhhhh...

I love you anyway, my whiny friend. ;)

Happy Friendship Day, although I don't need a day to celebrate our friendship. We do that everyday.

OK, I suppose I overreacted -- maybe. I love you, too.

But if we weren't on the phone right now you'd never have noticed my deep, deep pain. :catroar:

Right back at you, Qman.

(Which is very gracious of me considering you're already half way thru Monday! You know I had to say something or that one above would never let it go.)

I've been waiting to see if we celebrated it over here, seeing as how I was not inundated with friendship paraphernalia at work I assumed we didn't (it couldn't have been because I was at work during the night).

I've decided to give you the benefit of the doubt seeing as my home is front and centre on your picture.

Nighty night my friend.:D
