Villain : What I've Done

YOUR KIND ASSUMES WE'RE ALL THUGS.

HENRY LOUIS GATES IS AN OLD GRANDPA, HE'S NO THREAT TO ANYONE.

THE COP HATED HIM ON SIGHT FOR BEING BLACK.

THE WHITE COP IS A RACIST.

END OF STORY.

PS : We're trained to ignore verbal provocation from civilians on the job. The precinct captains don't assign hotheads to certain types of calls. Sergeant Crowley acted more like an insecure rookie than a veteran cop. His mistake was a rookie mistake. Veteran cops don't let chatty old people get to them. Regardless of color. Sounds like this white cop had a chip on his shoulder. Divorce, maybe ?

I actually agree with this. Quite strongly.

I've seen HLGjr speak at length.

He's navy blazer Harvard. Yeah, anyone can go off half cocked I know - somehow I don't think George Will would have had this happen to him if he'd gottan back from China, yelled, and done a "do you know who I AM?"

I don't assume that. Many white people don't assume that. Want to help change it? Quit acting like a racist dickweed yourself. Set an example. Have a long talk with Bill Cosby.

Here's something you don't know, being white, female, and a civilian.

Part of an officer's training in dealing with hot-headed men and women involves the proverbial smack of the face....administered by a large man who's called T.O. as in a training officer. We learn that at the academy. It's to desensitize us physically and mentally so we don't snap at the first flimsy gesture and start shooting dumb-ass civilians. ALL COPS go through this. Ask anyone.

Sergeant Crowley didn't act like a sergeant. I honestly thought only rookies made this mistake.

His actions embarass many veteran cops, both black and white, whom I respect.

Cambridge is outside my jurisdiction but there isn't a lot of sympathy for him at my precinct.

The white guy whom I ride in the squad car with as we responded to a domestic call today called Sergeant James Crowley "one of those dickheads who make us all look bad."

Don't even get me started on what the black cops are saying about him.

We usually stand by our BROTHER OFFICERS.....My precinct sergeant once drove drunk and I drove his ass home instead of taking him to a cell....and Im glad I did that.

Sergeant Crowley didn't make a good faith mistake....he acted stupidly.

I honestly thought he was in his twenties instead of a veteran cop....such a fool.

as are his racially biased supporters.

I guess smart cops patrol in Boston and retards patrol in Cambridge.

My precinct sergeant once drove drunk and I drove his ass home instead of taking him to a cell....and Im glad I did that.

Yeah. Because God knows it's alright when cops break the law.

The cops where y'all are from and the cops where I'm from must be two different breeds.

Yeah. Because God knows it's alright when cops break the law.

We look out for each other. Besides, the dude saved my skin when a burly dude with a flame-thrower nearly turned me a darker shade of brown. At my precinct, we're all brothers, black or white. Sergeant Crowley's shit got the precincts polarized and the city's people too. Asshole that he is. This guy's actions, racist or not, aren't helped by his refusal to apologize. He's not helping his city or his precinct. I wish he'd go away....and the story too.

I too spent time on the force.... There is only so much you will overlook from your fellow officer's before it is your duty to do what is right.

Before you continue to spew half-truths you should let the rest of the facts come out.

Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley has taught a class about racial profiling for five years at the Lowell Police Academy after being hand-picked for the job by former police Commissioner Ronny Watson, who is black, said Academy Director Thomas Fleming.
"I have nothing but the highest respect for him as a police officer. He is very professional and he is a good role model for the young recruits in the police academy," Fleming told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Pissed? Dude, he's a troll. It couldn't be any more obvious if he went on about being the reincarnation of Anansi the s-wait, didn't he do that?

Pretty much. If he was a white man saying this we'd all iggy him or make fun of him. Because he's coming from a different point of view, he's pissed and justifiably so.

Granted, he's a smarter troll than the average, but he's totally a troll.

God damn, wait a whole day and you crackers are all still alive?

Man, the old country gods aren't worth a fuck. Even the ones who've been in Spiderman.

Now Thor, there's a dude who gets his shit done.

Well, yeah, but Loki was a lot funnier.

Thor had no sense of humor. *shakes head*

When a white guy posted about police breaking up his party, everyone here understood why he was pissed, said they'd be pissed too, talked about how cops are dicks, untrustworthy, etc.

Why it's so hard for people here to understand anger on behalf of the 58 year old African American professor, arrested in his own home, I honestly can't fathom. Perhaps if someone can provide a cogent explanation for the arrest, I'll be able to see the anger as unreasonable.

I would be interested to read your response to this article on the Gates incident.

Specifically, I am interested to know if you concur with the author's assertion that there was "no plausible justification for the arrest. It was worse than stupid—it was abusive."

I love that article. It points to the significant problem that a lot of guys on the police force treat *everyone* like shit and people of color, simply even worse.

I honestly can't tell if you're deliberately being thick or not. Anger is good, anger is fine, but hurling around racial slurs like he's been doing tends to engender resentment. Is that really something you can't grasp?

"Men are rats. Listen to me, they're fleas on rats. Worse than that, they're amoebas on fleas on rats. I mean, they're too low for even the dogs to bite."

Watching that scene in Grease didn't make me defensive, didn't make me resentful, and didn't make me think of Frenchy as a misandrist. There was an understandable reason for her remarks.

This thread is different, of course, because the subject is very serious. Nevertheless, the OP reads, to me, like a guy who is blowing off steam by making statements that are clearly outrageous. I don't feel defensive or resentful in response to his remarks, and I don't believe he is really a violent hater of white people. Obviously, as I've already noted, I could be wrong about that.

What is your opinion of the Gates arrest? Do you believe it was justified?

I can see why people are angry.

But if someone gets online and states that one group (in this case white people) are the cause of all of some hateful activity (in this case racism), they are looking to pick a fight, and are therefore, TROLLS.

He didn't come on her to discuss why he's angry - that wasn't even in his first post. He didn't come on her to discuss racism. He came here and stated that white people are the cause of all racism, and if we weren't here there wouldn't be any. He was picking a fight, and that makes him a troll. Nothing more, nothing less.

That said - the whole thing about white people causing racism - I'd love to hear what white Europeans have to say about that. I have a black friend who is living with her white boyfriend/lover/SO in Sweden, and she says that she's encountered no problems with her being black or them being inter-racial. So there's another hole in this idiots theory that white people are the cause of racism.

TROLL!

The next time me and K get in a fight, if I were to come to one of my threads, and say that men are all assholes, and should be killed at birth, I would not get friendly reception.

If the next time someone finds out I'm half Jewish and suddenly stops returning calls, I came here and said that Jews are the chosen people, and the rest of you are worthless/useless and not wanted (I don't believe that), I also wouldn't get a warm reception, even though I'd have reason to be angry.

Going onto a forum and making inflammatory comments like that makes you a troll, WHETHER you're black or white.

I don't give a flying fuck what color the poster is. I can bring out this that and the other thing to prove my lack of racism, but I don't have to prove myself to anyone, especially a troll. And his attitude is racism, in itself.

Which is another pet peeve. If someone came on lit and said that all Muslims are terrorists (which has happened), they'd be (and were) ignored/jumped immediately and I would have posted my 'do not feed the trolls sign', even though A Muslim was responsible for the attacks of 9/11.

Well, A white man (or a couple) are responsible for the atrocity that has everyone up in arms. I will not take responsibility for what some other guy does, just because we share the same race, anymore than I will take responsibility for other Christians, other women, other mothers, and other daughters who do shitty stuff.

And while we're at it - I do not feel responsible for slavery all those years ago or oppression of black people in before the sixties. I wasn't alive, I did not do it, and I will not apologize for it. Every race of beings has, at one time, been enslaved, it's how the world used to work. I'm glad I live in a world where it doesn't anymore, but I WILL NOT take responsibility for things I had no part of. I only take responsibility for things that I had something to do with.

I also do not expect apologies from every guy I meet because at one time women were oppressed.

I don't understand what people mean when they call someone a troll.

Are you saying he's not part of your group of Lit friends? I get that, yes, it's obvious.

Are you saying he's just posting to stir up shit? I get that, too. In fact, that's exactly my point.

What I don't get is why people are giving straight responses to such obvious angry venting. "It's racist to say that white people should all be killed!" Duh. Thanks for sharing.

I can see why people are angry.

First - thank you for explaining what you mean by "troll."

Second - see my post, above. You and I appear to agree on his motives for lashing out on this thread. He's mad, and letting off steam.

When bett posted about the police thing, he didn't say anything like 'all police are corrupt' or whatever. He was stating what happened, and why he was mad.

Sx came online and just made one inflammatory comment. that's why I posted a troll sign.

A troll is someone who goes onto a forum deliberately to pick a fight. They think it's fun. Sometimes they're amusing, and obviously about 15, and sometimes they're flat out infuriating (which is why Sx is on my iggy list now - I don't feed trolls). Feeding the troll means that you've responded and given him what he wants. Trolls will not go away if they can piss people off.

Like I said, I can see why he's mad. If he was just looking to let of steam, he would have gone over to the cafe, posted a link to the story he's talking about and said things like 'sometimes it seems . . .' and 'i'm so mad'.

Which is kinda a side note thing - why is this thread in talk?

I have to wonder - didn't the neighbor (who call the police) know who lives there?

Sounds like someone was stirring up shit.

ETA: I just read another story that says that Gates doesn't blame his neighbor, which means that he wasn't surprised that she didn't recognize him. What is this world coming to when people don't even know what their NEIGHBOR looks like? [/hijack]

'Lashing out in anger' and 'behaving rationally' rarely coincide, in the moment. :)

As for why this thread is here and not somewhere else, I don't know and I don't care. I know a lot of people get their panties in a twist over what goes where on Lit, but I'm not one of them.

I don't normally, actually. It was just a side note. I didn't, like, report it or anything.

If he's serious, I'm mocking him because his behavior is idiotic and also delusional.

(I mean, seriously, the reincarnation of some god that appeared in Spiderman? Lulz.)

If he's clowning, then I'm enjoying the show.

Some guy in Cambridge deploys the 'Do you know who I am?' card and learns that you can beat the rap, but you can't beat the ride. Whatever. Wanna beef about it? Be my guest. Want to start talking genocide and generally out-Klanning the Klan? Not productive, idiotic.

Boo freakin' hoo.

For me the article starts off with this great Harvard citizen was arrested by this lowly police officer, of course that depends on which account of events you believe. (It was a bit snarky)

I do not know how many here have ever responded to an incident of any kind. That being said this officer was informed only that there was someone at this location attempting to break into the home. From the 911 call in the suspect was described as a black male. Upon arrival your adrenalin is through the roof and you have no idea what you are going walk into. One you would approach with caution. If you knock and no one is running you over to get away but they come to the door the first thing that you should do, would be to ask them to step outside. Reasoning why, walk into your front door close it and look around what can you see. How many things are within your reach that you could clobber a man/woman with, how close to a kitchen is your entrance, how fast can you get a knife, gun, or other type of weapon. Now step back out your front door and look upon your front porch, what items are there? In the mind of an officer where would you feel safer? Outside reason why... they know what is there no surprises. They would also have the availability of witnesses on the street should something come up.
In the article it indicates that he was leaving the premises and that would have been the end of it.

The cop did his job, he responded to the call, he ensured that the person who was in the house was who they said they were upon which it became a non issue and he was leaving. If he did follow behind him yelling those things then I am sorry, he was causing a disturbance and he was yelling at an officer of the law. If he was not able to control himself enough to quit yelling at the officer then they are supposed to arrest you and take you in.

I have been to calls that were the funniest thing you will ever see to the worst that you could imagine. Everyone was different and everyone I ever dealt with was treated with respect...except maybe the man who was cheating on his wife... after I talked her out of a window he showed up at the hospital with lipstick stains on his shirt.

My whole point with any of this is you have to treat everyone equally... if it is not okay to hang candidate x because you don’t like him then it should not be okay to hang candidate y just because you don’t like her. One is a hate crime while the other is a joke.

Somewhere along this great path of existence we have all lost what it means to treat someone other then ourselves with respect.

How come black policemen and black policewomen are never asked about their opinions on racial profiling ? Scared we'll tell an 'inconvenient truth' ?

No, it's because all black policemen and black policewomen are castrated tools of the white oppressor, so we know what they'll say.
