40 years ago today Teddy Kennedy murdered Mary Jo.

Kennedy staggered right past a fire station and a private home to return to the party, and never stopped to ask for help for the trapped Kopechne.

It was not until 10a.m. the next morning that Ted Kennedy reported the accident to the police.

Neither of us was there, but I suspect the man didn't have all that many options. Was it the right thing -- that which he did? No. Did he admit that? Yes. So.... but for his politics, why should we care? Admitting that the man's politics aren't necessarily ours, still ---> why should we still be hounding him about that? Life goes on.

Strom Thurmond recovered from racism, Edward Kennedy served his country well in the U.S. Senate for decades; people learn, grow, improve themselves. I respect people who are still learning.

And at the same time I've criticized the current admin not because of Obama's skin color but because of his politics. I'm not really Republican or Democratic... more libertarian than anything else.

It's because he drove his car into a pool of water with a woman he was appearently having an affair with and then let her drown and went back to hob-nobbing at his party.

He killed her to cover up having an affair. The Kennedies (and Bushes) are treated like royalty. They are ALLOWED to get away with this sort of thing and come to view the rest of us as disposable... less than human.

Was there some claim at the time that he actually intended to whack the Mary-jo whatever girl on purpose? I understood the story to be that he was fucking her (he fucked a lot of girls) and when the car went off the bridge, he was more concerned about his family image, etc., and didn't do what a reasonable person would do to help her. Bad enough, in my book, but it was a while back. As for premeditated murder? Haven't heard that part before.

Local fisherman spotted Kennedy’s Oldsmobile in the creek. A diver was sent down and discovered Kopechne's body at around 8:45 am. The diver, John Farrar, later testified at the inquest that Kopechne's body was pressed up in the car in the spot where an air bubble would have formed. He interpreted this to mean that Kopechne had survived for probably 30 minutes, or more, after the initial accident in the air bubble, and testified that he could have gotten to Mary Jo and saved her from drowing, if he had received a call within 10 or 15 minutes of the accident occurring. There was relevant testimony at the inguest that a homeowner with her porch light on was less than 150 yards from the scene.

On July 25, seven days after the incident, Kennedy entered a plea of guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident with injury.

Judge James Boyle sentenced Kennedy to two months incarceration, the statutory minimum for the offense, which he suspended.

On September 18, District Attorney Dinis attempted to secure an exhumation of Kopechne's body in order to perform a belated autopsy, citing blood found on Kopechne's skirt and in her mouth and nose "which may or may not be consistent with death by drowning", by the funeral director.

The request was opposed by Kopechne's parents who later admitted they received $90,904 from Kennedy.

I hope I am never tempted to sell my daughter's death for $90,904.

Hey Tiny - the police report of 17 year old Laura Welch (she didn't even know GW at the time) accident stated that no one had been drinking.

Welch also didn't leave the scene of the accident, dooming the boy she hit to death by drowning. The victim's father was in the car immediately behind the boy that got killed and was an eyeball witness to the entire mess.

No laws were broken, no charges were filed and no "suspended sentences" were meted out.

Not even a remotely similar situation.

She wasn't even a Bush at the time, so for once stop blaming the "Bushies".
