No, not that kind of Escort.

A white 96 Escort LX with a sunroof and a spoiler and a CD player. A hatchback that functions as a stealth station wagon able to hold skis and canoe paddles.

An Escort that needs to pass NYS inspection.

An Escort whose dealer went out of business.

An Escort with the check engine light on.

An Escort that just at the last minute developed a leak in the brake line and barely limped into the repair shop.

A 96 Escort does not get too much respect. When they tell you they'll call before they do anything, so you can make a decision, that's not a good sign.

I have a 17 year old cat in about the same shape. Very depressing.

My daughter bought an Escort LX in '95 and is still driving it. She's had very few problems over the years...she maintains it well as I taught her, and the beast keeps on tickin'. No sunroof tho.

'Check engine' usually means a bum PCV (pollution control valve)...that's an easy fix as is replacing a brake line. Unless there are other problems (major ones), I say repair it and drive it until the wheels fall off.

As for the cat...I didn't know they had brakes...or PCV's for that matter.

If the bodywork is up to scratch, I say fix it.

I wouldn't put the cat down just because its kidneys are failing. Some of them can go for quite awhile with medical management. Save the euthanasia for when the medical management isn't working anymore and the cat is suffering.

The cat has been on IV -- a little each night -- for over a year and a half now.

The last time we boarded her at the vet she took turn for the worse and we thought that was the end. But now she's back to living a typical cat existence. She's holding us hostage though -- we're thinking the next time we board her might be the last.

And yes -- I can understand how traumatic it would be to put a cat down. Each night when I give her the IV I think about it.
