We went to a midnight showing last night, since my boys were so excited to see it.
I'll say right off that I didn't like this one as much as the first, but Spawn disagreed with me, so there may be some who like it better.
It has a lot more adult humor in it than the first. In several places I was laughing but Spidey had no clue what I was laughing at. Don't see it expecting to learn any universal truth about life, or find any deep meaning. There isn't any, but as a summer popcorn movie, it holds up just fine.
John Turturro is back, only this time he's a good guy. The two main army guys are back, and their characters were consistent enough that I liked them. Sam's parents aren't nearly as whiny and clueless as they were in the first movie (although his mother comes close), and Sam's college roommate provides a lot of the humor.
Without giving away anything, there were a couple of WTF moments, particularly one right at the end that I felt could have been handled so much better rather than the "hand of God" thing that they did, but it wasn't so bad as to ruin the movie for me. It was an extremely short scene, and I was able to look over it.
If you're looking for robots fighting, lots of chases, tons of stuff blowing up, and a hot girl right in the middle of it, then you should be just fine with this movie. My boys both loved it.
