Life is a joy filled with delightful surprises.

My life is a joy filled with love, fun and friendship all I need do is stop all criticism, forgive, relax and be open.

I choose love, joy and freedom, open my heart and allow wonderful things to flow into my life.

Oh, the hell it is. Life is a cruel thing, filled with unpleasant surprises and incessant disappointments for nearly everybody. If you're lucky, that's balanced out by good things. If you're not, and I am not, then God gives you unpleasantness and heaps on another shovel or eighteen. Bitter? Me? Never, why would you possibly think that.

So much for Positive Affirmations. hehehe

Eh, you start a thread with a title like this around my neck of the proverbial woods and it's just asking for trouble.

Just giving you a hard time :p
Ive been hit with the chaos stick lately over and over, so I see your side of things.
Just forever trying to be optimistic, aint going that way lol.

Yes, there are times we descend into hell. It's still a beautiful life and a beautiful world. I have always believed that everything happens for a reason. We meet who we are supposed to meet and learn lessons along the way. The more you give to the world the more it will give back. Why worry and be negative? Why be around toxic people who drain you of hope? Positive thinking does have power.

That was a positive affirmation. He's positive that life sucks, etc.

Lol True. Just not the positive affirmation I think Dom was looking for :p
And yes the bumps in the road now are leading me to grow and change the way I view thing for the better. I cant say the chaos stick was all bad, there is a silver lining.

Hmmm... that gives me an idea. I'm going to name one of my canes "Chaos Stick." :D

Interesting, I think I can take the reverse of every sentence and it would accurately represent my views on life. Let's try it:

Yes, there are times when we take a glimpse of Heaven. We still live a shitty life in a shitty world. I believe that things genuinely do not happen for a reason and that chaos really does rule the universe - we meet people at random and we may or may not learn from that. The more you give to the world, the more it takes, so why bother being positive? Being pessimistic means you get disappointed less.

...damn, that's rather freaky.

Not to be contrary... oh, hell, who am I kidding?

MS, I *think* you're not quite the curmudgeon you portray, but even if you are, have you considered the thought that making a conscious effort to try to look at life in a more positive light might actually help make things better? I'm not saying things will magically turn around in the blink of an eye, but I do believe that a good part of our "luck," good or bad, in this life comes to some extent from what we expect of life.

If life gives you lemons make lemonade. Then find someone who life gave them vodka and have a party.

It's about seventy to eighty percent. You're probably right, maybe I should try it. I reserve the right to stay a curmudgeon though.

I have always prized the curmudgeon. The curmudgeon gives perspective and honesty while others paint the rosy pictures.

While prizing that bleak honesty, I've also always felt sorry for those who live a totally curmudgeonly life.

For my own part, I can look back at plenty of bleak periods in my life, times when I was in holes so deep and dark that I couldn't see any way out. I'm always struck at how much I laughed and joked in those circumstances, because hell, if you're already mired in the shit either you're going to die in it or you're going to fight your way out.

You're right- life is random and only has the purpose you choose to imbue it with. I choose to imbue mine with the pursuits of truth and happiness.

Does it have a point? Not in the grand scheme. But damn it, it's my one spin at this world, and I'm not going to spend it maundering about at how miserable shit is.

Problems are challenges. Challenges are opportunities to better ourselves.

Someone told me yesterday that if you are going through Hell, put the pedal to the metal, and for goodness' sake, don't take an off-ramp!

A text I've had hanging in my bathroom since forever, for contemplation while on the throne. No matter what is occurring in my life, some part of it always speaks to me.

"Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy."

Max Ehrmann c.1920

I'm positive that things are shitty for me and mine. Currently.

That last word is the important one.

Through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it.

Thanks Homburg...that's a great and important reminder for me. Things are shitty for my vanilla "mine" than the BDSM relationships.

i WILL get through this...and so will You and Yours.
