I was looking for the rant against anonymous thread, but the way this forum is set up, it's very hard to find an old thread, so....

Here is what someone said about one of my stories ("The Night Before Christmas"):

well i will tell u what...it had a good story line...but it is just a little hard to follow...should have given the year it took place, becouse l was haveing a hard time following that part...and also u could have added better detail and not so many strenuis words, becouse i don't belive that everybody is as inteligant as us......now if i have made u think i am somewhat ilitorate, well i am sorry, i am just getting over epstein bar and i amvery tired......well all in all ibelive i gave u a 4

People who read the story intelligently don't have such a hard time figuring out that it took place a few years after WWII, even if I didn't put down an actual year...but what gets me is the part about the "strenuis" [sic] words...I think I might have one story that scored as high as 8th grade in the Flesch-Kincaid thing, but that one wasn't one of them.

At last he gave it a 4.

Feh.

This is why you make readers pay to see your stuff.

They did an experiment at Harvard, where everyone is a genius. The researcher set up a booth where he sold SoBe energy drink to the whiz-kids. He sold identical cans of drink to everyone, but one batch was seriously discounted in price, and the other was increased in price. He gave the Junior Einsteins a choice...Sobe for $3.00 or SoBe for 50 cents.

Most chose the $3 SoBe, and they rated the $3 SoBe as superior to its 50 cent twin.

They did something similar with Nikes or Reeboks or some brand in the 70s or 80s. The shoes weren't selling so they doubled the price and they flew off the shelves. Perceived value costs you real money.

JOMAR

I read about THAT in another book. People use brands and price as a measure of self worth.

Hey ST,

I feel Yer' pain (And I just returned from NoFl.) I appreciate your comment in my similar thread!!!

So...

Fortunately, the comments I receive give me a good laugh, as well as reinforce that "...opinions vary...and I like mine..." I'm also selfish about my stories. I really write them for me... The very act of setting my memories down in text keeps them very alive, and me very stimulated (Which my Dear Hubby really likes.)

I enjoyed your story that I read!

Good On Ya'...

JL

To rate them, they couldn't have only bought the $3 SoBe, right?

At some point, most made-up stories break down in the telling.

Thing the commenter was putting you on, Slick--or he/she probably wouldn't have raised the issue of intelligence at all.

MISTER SOFTEE

How would I know? Could be wild-ass guessing, like your sex stories.

But the tale is consistent with other reports of the same phenomenon.

Ah, you've read some of my stories here, then. That's pleasing to hear.

I'd read some of your stories here, but that's just another of the "just pretend" areas of your life here. ;)

I your case it'll be one of life's little mysteries you failed to solve. Maybe I'll write your eulogy.

With this kind of stuff they are just rating them, but "know" the price, so perceived value and confirmation bias gets measured.

Advertising "studies" use tricks like having the person "choose" the product they prefer - more often the one on the right because most people are right handed and are subtly influenced that way.

Point missed. In JBJ's story, they had to choose to buy just one of the two. You can't rate them without having them both.

MISTER SOFTEE is making an assumption that doesnt exist. The kids rated what they bought. The kids who bought the expensive SoBe rated it higher than the cheapskates rated their drink.

You have to take him by the hand.

Not really, I assumed something more to it. But you're correct you can't do a side-by-side without comparison. I did a blind taste test for an undergrad experiment and the cheapest beer won.

This here would be what we call a comparison test, Jimbo. Can't do a comparison test with separate test groups.

About that hand . . . Your's seems to be up something dark--right beside your head. :D
