Favorite Actors/Actresses

Peter O'Toole. Not afraid to be extravagant in his delivery, but always believable.
Jack Nicholson. Same thing - not afraid at all of looking ugly if that's what the performance requires.

Peter O'Toole, often miscast but still impressive.

Og

Yeah, even in something as poppish as High Spirits, he still maintained a particular presence.

"A trifle moist, are we?"

He was wonderful as Pope Paul III in the series The Tudors.

Damn it, I still keep meaning to watch that. But I can't tear myself away from Battles BC and Life After People. :p

Sort of going the other direction, but I used to catch everything Nicholas Cage was in...lately not so eager.

Interesting to me - I really like Robert Downey Jr and Jamie Foxx, two outstanding actors, and I usually watch them, but the material has to be appealing for me to pick them up. Amazing story, but their latest collaboration...eh.

Richard Burton.
That man could read a telephone directory and still make it sound good.

My estimation of Selma Hayek grew (even more) after I saw this. She's our generation's Audrey Hepburn, I think. So very genuine and real and stunningly beautiful inside and out.

Emma Thompson. Every time I've seen her on the screen, she's owned it.
Yup.

Add my vote for Alan Rickman, too. Not only his voice. If he's on screen, I'm not looking anywhere else.

Lee van Cleef was in HIGH NOON and another Clint Eastwood western..FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE.

Two that people often overlook.

Alan Alda and Robin Williams.

Both are incredibly talented and entertaining.

I admit I didn't really like the guy until, first, Romeo and Juliet. A lot of people have blasted that movie, but I thought it was artfully done. Mercutio stole the show. ;) But DiCaprio's role was well-suited to him, primarily because of the pretty-boy look and demeanor. I still wasn't that impressed with him, however, until . . . .

Gangs of New York. Holy Hell, what a flick. I hadn't heard much about the movie when I first saw it, so I didn't know who the stars were. Good thing, too; I might have balked if I had known ahead of time that Cameron Diaz was in it. I just remember the scene in which we are introduced to a grown-up Amsterdam, and I was thinking, "Leonardo DiCaprio? WTF?"

The film did two things for me. It impressed upon me the fact that DiCaprio is an actor, and it reaffirmed by appreciation for perhaps one of the finest actors in the world, whom I neglected to mention earlier: Daniel Day-Lewis. Like Gary Oldman, he's never the same character from film to film. His portrayal of William Cutting was crass, rude, and incredibly chilling.

Gangs is a big favorite for me, for many reasons... one of them being the director. Other great actors in that film besides the ones you mentioned are Broadbent, O'Reilly and Gleeson... not a lot of female roles there, though...

So I will weigh in on the director thing by giving a shout out to Marty Scorsese.

Many great and memorable performances have been mentioned here. I've a few of my own to offer: Michael Rennie in the Day the Earth Stood Still.....
Ice Cube in Friday after Next.....
Billy Bob Thornton in Slingblade.....
Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men.....
Michael Keaton in Batman......
Jack Nicholson in Batman......
Eddie Murphy in Coming to America.....
Sean Connery as James Bond......
Peter Sellers in anything he ever did......

I don't think there is any "Star" that would cause me to spend money to go to a theater to see a movie.

Some "Star"s that I enjoy watching either in bought or rented DVD's are:

Ashley Judd - good looking and a decent actress.

Kurt Russel is a good actor, loved him in Soldier and Stargate.

Matt Damon - Bourne series although I though him and Robin William were good in "Good Will Hunting"

Sandra Bullock good at humor - Miss Congeniality and good at hooky drama - Speed and good at real drama - The Net.

Then there are those on TV ...

Richard Dean Andersen comes to mind.

Tina Fey - love her in 30 Rock.

Mark Harmon - NCIS

and a whole host of others to numerous to mention. Stars abound, on the silver screen and on the black tube/led/plasma screen, some good ones have turned from films to TV Series.

Amanda Peet is totally underrated as a office box draw and top list actress. Just look at her body, of work, especially in the Nine Lives series and Saving Silverman. Crazy good!

This is NOT a celebrity crush. No way.

Back me up here, bluey!

I know. A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More were the first parts of the trilogy that ended with Good, Bad and Ugly. I thought Van Cleef was in all three, though (I've yet to find A Fistful of Dollars anywhere).

I'll watch anything with either Alan Rickman or Sam Eliot in it, just for their voices alone.

For those that think Sam Elliot is just Western, go back and find "Once an Eagle" his breakout roll.

Yup.

He did a show for HBO a couple years ago about heart surgeons at Hopkins. I think it's What God hath wraught"? Anyway seeing him in that roll with a good Southern accent and then seeing him as Snape is amazing.

Richard Dean Andersen comes to mind.

And his Stargate: SG-1 costar, Amanda Tapping. She does sexy and smart very well. I'm hoping her Sanctuary series will get picked up again.

Humphrey Bogart.

Need I say more?

He was definitely one of the original strong leading men.

She had a pretty nice body in The Whole Nine Yards, too.

Or Road House. ;)

Add his wife Lauren Bacall for class.
Two of the best, ever!

Bacall, Dietrich, Wray, Liz Taylor, and good ol' Norma Jean, too . . . .

I just bought the Man with No Name trilogy. It has them all :D

Big Trouble in Little China was on last night. I thought of you, slyc, when I saw it, so I just had to watch a little before bed. It's always been one of my favs for its entertainment value. It's quirky, amusing and full of silly, slap-stick action. Kim Catrall was funny, Kurt was ridiculously macho and even the bad guy was humorous. Good entertainment.

Well, male would be Mickey Rourke - for a managing to make the most creepy characters very likable (as in 9 1/2 weeks, Barfly, Spin asf) and Anthony Hopkins, female probably Sigourney Weaver not just for the Alien series but also performances as in "Death and the maiden" - and I'm also a big fan of Jodie Foster, because of her incredible range.
