short version: by now we've all seen the bullshit gay storm fear & mongering ad. a rather insightful blogger points out a two word rebuttal to that piece of crap: fred phelps. long version here.

Brilliant!

The sad thing is, there really are people who believe this crap. A lot of whom make laws.

Firstly, that ad would NEVER make it to TV in the UK because it's discriminatory and incites hatred. We've had same sex marriages or civil partnerships here in the UK since 2004 and the Christian churches - by and large - leave it be. They have the right to refuse to marry or bless gay couples in their church but that's where their jurisdiction ends. They do not have the right to gaybash on prime time, any more than bi/gay/TS/CD associations have the right to bitch about Christians live on air.

In the UK we also have some gay clergy, though the churches are very divided on this. Gay clergymen/women have more recently been elevated to the status of Bishop (clicky) and those who object to that simply attend a different church, join a different branch of Christianity or make their views known in more reasonable ways like letters and petitions.

Pootling about on Lit so much, I often forget how polarized American society is and how much bigotry and ignorance is legitimized and given credence and exposure that simply wouldn't happen here. Many people here in the Uk think we're all forced to be too PC and that nobody's allowed a radical opinion anymore. Sometimes I agree with them but looking at some of the extreme groups, factions and opinions in the USA, I'm glad to be in Britain.
