Personally, I like them because I'm the romantic type to begin with. Most stories about losing virginity--at least, the ones that get into the category--involve a certain amount of tension and character chemistry and romantic/hormone-induced haze and, well, magic. I like that. It's right up my alley.

As to objections, it'd basically be the same as I'd object to anywhere--bad characterization, bad dialogue, cliches, adverbs, misunderstanding of the emotions involved--inaccurate anatomy... I think the irony in the "first-time" genre is that it is one of the worst places for a first-time writer to start--they may not have a sufficient grasp of the emotions and such involved, and do an unrealistic job. Of course, I prefer hyper-realism in my stories; YMMV.

I actually haven't read that many, but the few I remember seemed pretty decent. I like the conflictual emotions that can go with first-time experiences - should I/shouldn't I, is he/her the right one, is this how I imagined my first time would be, is this the right place/time, etc. Stories that neglect such personal questioning I don't find as interesting.

That helps, in real life as in fiction, but the challenge (in real life as in fiction) is to simply make the best of it. What happens if you have two people who are both virgins on their wedding night?--not as unlikely as one might think. And besides, experience gleaned with other lovers is personalized to that lover; not all of it is necessarily applicable to another person. (Though, at the very least, you have ideas for things to try. I'm not saying it doesn't help; I'm saying your lover might not react quite the way you hoped they would. )

In my opinion, no one has "good sex" right off the bat, unless it's a story on this site. (It may not be bad sex, but it's also not good until the two of them learn enough about each other, and/or themselves, to make it good.) So the question isn't, "How do we not have un-good sex?" The answer is, you don't not have it. The question is, "How quickly can we stop having un-good sex?" And at that point, a virgin can be just as good as anyone else, if s/he is committed to getting better. Enthusiasm is the most important quality in learning.

And I'm with V2B about the ambivalence and constant back-and-forthing of motivation and emotion.

Following on from CWatson's first post, inaccurate anatomy stuff drives me nuts. Particularly in respect of virgin girls and the whole breaking hymen/bleeding the first time stuff.

Number 1 - the hymen is not a membrane, it's a rim on the inside of the vagina and that rim can feel tight, or loose and flexible.

Number 2 - the rim is at the opening of the vagina. Not, as many seem to think, deep inside the vagina. So this whole idea that the guy can insert his cock a few inches before breaking the hymen is, well, wrong.

Number 3 - not all girls bleed the first time they have sexual intercourse. In fact, something like 80% of girls don't bleed as such the first time and if they do bleed, it's usually cos the couple were going way too fast.

Now I realise that all of the above messes up a lot of what we kind of like about first time stories. And I can live with hearing about a bit of pain and that there was a bit of blood, but the hymen halfway up the vagina thing...

The whole "should I/shouldn't I" thing is always very important, if not essential, to First Time stories. Few people "jump in" to losing their virginity and I think even fewer people "jump in" to take it. Realistically, even in the most idyllic situations there is SOME hesitancy, whether its acknowledged or not.

But I've had sex with two virgins, and neither had their hymen, at ages 15 and 18 (Don't fret y'all, in the former case I was 15 too). I don't particularly like first time stories.

I can tell you what "sells", i.e. what the average reader wants:

A romanticized, idealized version of a first time experience, with just enough realism to make it seem feasible.

For the one First Time story I wrote I've gotten the most private feedback. 90% of it was either "I hope my first time is like that" or "I wish my first time was like that". There was also a little sadness I didn't give the characters a super-happy ending (they knew going in it wasn't a relationship heading to marriage).

First time stories are like "origin" stories. We love 'em because everything is new and exciting and "Wow!" to the virgin character. We are charmed by the virgin's nervousness, delighted by their curiosity and amazement, thrilled by their awakening. It's similar to when you walk with a child and they're awed by all you usually take for granted. You re-see how cool things are through their eyes. Likewise, in origin stories, of any type, you re-live that magic of the first time when something blew you away and you never knew that kind of experience existed.

And you relive it right.

Of course, our first time with anyone can have some of the same feelings, but with the virgin they ring very true and can be carried to an extreme without seeming absurd. Thus, for the actual virgin reader, this kind of story can offer the fantasy of a first time that will be magical and special (whether or not the writer tosses in any realistic details), and for the experienced reader, such stories allow them to re-live that moment in a way that goes right (unlike the real first time which might have been nightmarish).

I think a lot of readers also like the fact that the experienced partner does pretty much everything for the virgin: guides them, coddles them, pleasures them. Which is what I, personally don't like about these stories. I like stories where both sides can bring something to the table. Unless both are virgins, you have the experienced and inexperienced and, depending on writer/story/scenario of the sex, that can come across as too patronizing to me. Especially if it's a female virgin who spends the story just lying there re-acting to what the experienced male is doing.

I've written quite a few first time stories. One was newlyweds on their wedding night. They were both virgins, and awkward but in love. I also have some about getting a virginal woman off by eating her pussy, which may not be all that realistic, but it's fun.
