I recently submitted a story, Tatsumi Ch. 1, to the Romance category because it isn't highly sexual. The story focuses on the budding romantic relationship between two women. It was moved to Lesbian Sex, even though the story has no sex in it whatsoever.

Who would I speak to about changing this back?

That happens quite often.

There are two routes available:

The easy one, but less likely to succeed in a hurry, is to send a PM to laurel and explain.

The more time consuming, but more likely to be effective in the short term, is to resubmit the story with the same title, but with -CATEGORY CHANGE appended to the title. In the Notes box put your explanation.

There is only one functional category each for lesbian and GM male here (and none, really, for bi). The site editors were probably doing you a favor in getting your story away from damning comments if it contained lesbian material.

sadly, he's actually probably right. just about the only exception, that i can think of, is incest, but that's just an odd category in general.

eta: i assume you're a he. feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

Actually, you can get away with it in the fringe categories as well -- sci-fi/fantasy, non-human, etc.

GM/Bi-Male is another story. If you don't warn readers in advance, you still may get blasted for that even in those forgiving categories.

To the OP -- the lesbian sex category is probably the best place for your story, in my opinion. You'll avoid any shock from readers expecting straight romance ( and possibly nasty comments ) and the LS category has its fair share of romantic lesbian stories that center more on emotion than groping. You'll find your readership there.

As SR has advocated often, there should be more divisions for different types of lesbian/bi/GM stories, but just have to go with what's available for now.

With well over 150,000 stories on the site, I doubt that any change to the classification system will occur any time soon.

There are other ways to improve the situation, though. I understand the more or less impossible task of reclassifying existing stories. Giving the keywords a bigger, more visible role could help.

Creating new classifications and having the original, lump-all categories labeled as an archive is one way to go. Authors who are still active could request a category change to one of the new, specific categories if they don't want to remain in the archive.

Alternately, a sub-category listing shouldn't take too much coding to implement. Another drop-down in the submission form for the potluck categories and a place to display it in the story listings. Again, active authors could add the sub category to existing stories.

GM/Bi/Lesbian stories really get the shaft for having to compete with umpteen different genres within one category -- and there's the infamous LW category.

Can't hurt to toss out ideas. You never know when one might stick *laugh*
