Okay, so if you click on this link:

http://www.kindle.com

Where does it take you? Does it redirect to amazon.com for you as it does for me? Anyone else wanna confirm that? I mean maybe it's just my computer redirecting me to amazon.com instead of this mysterious and elusive Kindle store.

And if a Kindle e-book isn't immediately available through amazon.com, why, if you click on that above link and type in the search bar (after using the pull-down menu to select BOOKS) do books that haven't been released yet, have an option for pre-order? I mean if it doesn't appear on the amazon.com website right away, wouldn't it be fair to say that the "available for pre-order" message wouldn't be there?

All my e-books that haven't been released yet have the "available for pre-order" on them and I went in both ways...through amazon.com and kindle.com (which took me to amazon.com anyway)

Out of curiosity, and I'm not sure why beyond that, I created a user account at CreateSpace.com

Nowhere did I find a link for their store. As a matter of fact, I looked through several pages. The CreateSpace store didn't appear anywhere as a clickable link allowing me to search for a title.

But you know what did appear on every page in the lower right corner? This image:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3075/3346812421_50362eee78_o.gif

Yet I still don't see any kind of a link for this elusive and mysterious CreateSpace store.

Once I created my account, I found oodles of information on self-publishing and print on demand and even how to track royalties and claim those earnings on my taxes. This was at 3:40pm.

At 4:03pm, I'm still searching the CreateSpace.com website for someplace I can search for titles and buy them directly from the site.

And finally, at 4:12pm, I found something about a CreateSpace E-Store. Still elusive, however, as to how to purchase a book through there.

The FAQ I read through and mostly deals with publishing your print on demand book and selling it through Amazon.com. Although, the FAQ did have a listing for any authors/publishers who chose not to sell their book through amazon.com but instead through the CreateSpace E-Store only. Odd that I still didn't find a specific web address for that so I could search for titles to purchase.

From the CS FAQ:

"Can I create a book through CreateSpace and not list it on Amazon.com?

Yes; you will have the option to select the sales channels you prefer when you set up your title, and may choose to sell your book through your CreateSpace E-Store only."

Still, no link to that ever elusive store. So I dig further....

And finally, FINALLY, at 4:15pm., I find information on the elusive CreateSpace E-Store. Apparently when you create a title for self-publishing/print on demand, it sets you (the author/publisher/whatever) up with your very own E-Store which you can provide links to through your website or where ever.

More from the CreateSpace FAQ:

"Once you approve the proof, we will provide you with a URL that you can use to link your website to your title's unique E-Store.

Customizing your E-Store is easy – simply follow these steps:

1. Log in to your Member Account using your email address and account password.
2. Select the title you will be modifying and click the "Edit" link.
3. There are several sections on the Edit Title page, including one called E-Store. Click the "Edit E-Store" link on the right side of that section.
4. On the Printed Materials section you can modify your E-Store trailer, banner, color selection, etc.
5. To complete the process, click on the "Save" button at the bottom right side of the page."

Yet, beyond that, I still see no store where I can browse titles and purchase any books. So the E-Store is there, yes, but it's specific URLs for each author/publisher.

Aren't you glad I cleared that up? I know I am.

Anyway, back to the whole Amazon.com thing. So if I publish a book through CreateSpace, I get a URL for my own e-store and the book will be available immediately for sale, but it may take up to two weeks to appear on amazon.com AND I have the option of not selling it through amazon.com at all....but really, why would anyone opt to not sell through amazon? It's only one of the most popular sites on the web. But I digress...

I see where only half your argument is right, butchy. But, for anyone wanting to purchase a paperback book that's created through the CreateSpace website, CAN purchase it through amazon.com, they have to wait, but they can do it. Unless of course, the author/publisher provides the direct link to buy the book before it appears on amazon.com, but with all the cool stuff on amazon, why wouldn't you wanna shop there? :D

You are not going to believe this, but I clicked on the link. It brought me to Amazon. com. There is no drop down list that has the word Books or e-Books on it. There is electronics and audio and videos, cameras and photos, etc. NO books. I think your PC must have some kind of default that mine doesn't have. I'm not kidding. Its not there.

Sure I do.

But I'm waiting to see what Barnes & Noble does.

You, being a publishing consultant and author of a book on publishing, really should explain to everyone why a person with an erotic book, or any other e-book, ready to be published, might want to find out exactly what Barnes & Noble is going to do before you make a move.

Why sure, I'll respond to this--again. Have done so before, but you didn't like the answer so pretended it wasn't there (you're really, really good at pretending).

If I had a manuscript to try to get published, I wouldn't be thinking of B&N at all. That's just a distributor--and not even the first line of distribution.

I'd be thinking whether I could get it into the mainstream with an agent and a mainstream publisher than then work my way back. If it's erotic, it better be mainly something else more that the mainstream likes (literary, sci fi) and it better not be too graphic. Then you let your agent worry about where it is targeted and sans an agent, you let the publisher take care of distribution and orchestratel marketing.

So, if it can get into the mainstream, you don't think B&N at all.

Unless, of course, you can't get anyone to publish it for you and you have to self-publish it and worry about distribution all on your own. Then you just pick one of many print-on-demand services that also offers listing in the on-line stores, including B&N. (In this scenario, you aren't going to be getting it into a bookstore, so you needn't worry about B&N brick and mortar stores unless you are bonking the manager of your local B&N, in which case you might get a couple of copies in that store for a few weeks).

If your book is truly erotica, though, you just try to go with an e-publisher who can get it listed on appropriate e-book Web sites and Amazon.com and maybe B&N online. Because, as you've been told before, the target market for erotica is in e-books.

What do you want to bet, you won't understand a bit of this--or at least will pretend you don't? But it doesn't matter to me, because if/when you have a manuscript to sell, that's going to be your problem, not mine. I'm doing fine with my erotica placements. :)

Okay, but right next to the pull down menu, there's a little thing that reads "Shop all departments"

So I wasn't completely accurate, but kindle.com still takes you to amazon.com which was the entire point of this particular argument.

And once more for the slower learners:

AMAZON IS KINDLE IS AMAZON IS KINDLE IS AMAZON IS KINDLE IS AMAZON....

Thanks for playing.

Sure, she'll believe it--because you don't seem to be too swift. We've been discussing the Kindle Store as Amazon.com's e-book division for only about a week here now. Click on Kindle Store (it's right there).

Although why anyone would buy their erotica e-books from Amazon.com, when several other sites are so much better set up for it and have a much wider selection is beyond me.

You really are delusional to think that the Penguins are gonna actually make it somewhere this year, butch. Do you forget who beat them last year in the Stanley Cup Playoffs?

Well, I'll make you a bet then.

I bet the Penguins make it further in the Stanley Cup playoffs than the Red Wings do. Speaking of Red Wings, I bet Ace never earned his, but scouries and BFW did. But that's a bet for another day.

Here's the bet. If the Red Wings do better in the playoffs, I'll never post on this thread again. If the Penguins do better in the playoffs, you never post again on this thread again. That includes all your alts. You know, the other girls from Michigan.

The loser has the option of going double or nothing on the NFL playoffs this season, your Lions against my Steelers.

Well, this isn't probably a very good reason, but your e-book Cruising Through History sells for $5.99 at exCessica and $4.79 at Amazon.com.

The prices fluctuate with the sales at the various sites. Fine with me, though; a sale is a sale--and I'm not getting any profit anyway, so a one-unit sale is pretty much the same for me wherever it occurs. All sales are good.

Selena would prefer a sale at eXcessica, of course, because the profit would be higher for the coop publishing effort.

I wonder if you can purchase it in as many e formats at the Kindle Store as elsewhere? Just mildly interested, of course, since I don't order them anywhere.

All that said, I don't think Amazon.com is set up for browsing and finding erotica as well as the specialization distribution sites are (nor do I think the erotica shoppers go there like they do at the specialty sites).

First off, this is the only ID I have so if I lose this bet, I can't guarantee "the other girls from Michigan" won't post here. As a matter of fact, I hope they do.

But anyway, I'll take the bet because I'm confident in the Wings at getting the job done. The season ain't over yet, butchy. Not by a long shot. Penguins have to make it to the playoffs first. Wings are already guaranteed to be there.

Oh and just to show my support and confidence in my team, I'm changing my AV. Gonna leave it up until after the playoffs too, no matter the outcome.

As far as the NFL goes? Not a chance in hell I'd bet on the Lions winning anything. I'm crazy, not stupid.

Don't feel bad that you are totally ignorant of this Kindle stuff, even though you are a publishing consultant for eXcessica and author of a book on publishing.

Just stay tuned to this thread. Scouries didn't know what a Kindle was either, until he read about it on this thread. Now he has a Kindle, as do all the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders.

In fact, his favorite line these days to the cheerleaders is, "Let's Kindle, baby!" You can read all about it in his new book (see my avatar).

OK, I won't feel bad. I'll let you feel bad for both of us. :)

I'm going to direct this post to the chick from Michigan since she seems to be a little more understanding today than the pilot. Please note that little has been underscored.

I just got my first PC in November. I haven't got a clue what I'm doing when I get on the internet. My husband left me in June and I'm horny, so I started looking for "something of interest" on the internet. I rely on Google for everything. I didn't even know what an e-book was until you guys started to "advertise" them on this thread.

If I went to Amazaon looking for an e-book, you can see that I just wouldn't have happened upon that by accident. I certainly would have had to do some searching. If I was looking for a book, I'd go to Barnes and Noble and buy one.

My point is, and I think Sarrahhh point is, they aren't easier accessible, unless you know what your are doing. Maybe you should send a note to your threadmaster to put a little icon out there for "dummies" that says e-book.

I'm not in advertising and I'm not in marketing. I'm a shopper. All I want to do is point and click. I don't want to search............

Thank you for reading and understanding.

Amazon.com has only recently started into having anything to do with e-books. So, that's not where buyers are looking for erotica e-books much yet. They go to places like Allromanceebooks.com and Fictionwise.com and a few other e-book sites. It's just common sense that erotica e-publishers will concentrate on sites where the buyers are going. Someday eventually buyers will probably be at Amazon.com for e-books in big enough numbers for e-publishers to care much about it.

Until then, you'll just have to adjust or stew in your juice--along with Sarahh.

And, no, it doesn't bother me a bit that you were addressing Mich and not me. You posted to a public board. The thing to do if you don't want responses from the public is to PM her.

Oh, and maybe these two things help explain why you dropped in on this board with such beligerence to begin with. Maybe you're new to Internetting and have the personality that prompts a husband to give up on you.

(although I still think you are the alt of a regular with an ax to grind.)

Okay, and let's add a nice little side bet to this as well, make it beneficial in some way for everyone.

If the Panthers do better than the Wings in the playoffs, then scouries has to come clean once and for all about everything....he has to post to this thread that he doesn't make money writing for lit, he has to admit that views (or hits) are not sales, he has to fess up to the fact that he's just a 2 bit writer who writes for a free porn site, he has to fess up to all his alts, and....and this is the big one...he has to apologize to every single person he's ever insulted or degraded since this thread began.

And to make it more interesting, he and the Grand_High_Poohbah ID can no longer post on ANY other thread but this one.

Oh and to sweeten the bet a little more....let's involve Freddie, since the three of you seem to stick together.....if the Bruins make it farther than the Red Wings in the playoffs, he has to stop ALL his bullshit too, not just on this thread, but ALL threads. All the whining, all the out-of-the-blue personal attacks and he has to come clean on any alts he uses.

The stakes still stand for you and I sarahh. So what do you say Freddie? Scouries? You two in on this?

His loss, SR71plt, I've been writing ever since he left.

Good for you. Welcome to the AH. What do you write? What have you published?

It would be depressing to write for 31 years with nothing to point to.

Oh, Pilot, when you answer questions, I'll answer question.
Where did you put your calculator?

Where did you put your calculator?

It's right here beside my computer. But why did you have to correct me? I've noticed you are always correcting people. Is this an obsession you have to correct people all of the time? Gee, if I were the kind to go beserk, I'd be harrassing you for the next two weeks. :D

(By the way, I answered yet another question there for you.)

So, you are either lying now or you were lying before. Lying is obviously a natural part of these Internet games you suck at. No reason to believe anything you post, as you are an acknowledged liar. OK. I don't care. Just goes with the package. Like that "I'm not an alt" statement.

Does anybody besides Ace agree with this statement?

Especially the first sentence.
