3/3/09: Math fans to celebrate Square Root Day

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Dust off the slide rules and recharge the calculators. Square Root Day is upon us.

The math-buffs' holiday, which only occurs nine times each century, falls on Tuesday — 3/3/09 (for the mathematically challenged, three is the square root of nine).

"These days are like calendar comets, you wait and wait and wait for them, then they brighten up your day — and poof — they're gone," said Ron Gordon, a Redwood City teacher who started a contest meant to get people excited about the event.

The winner gets, of course, $339 for having the biggest Square Root Day event.

Gordon's daughter even set up a Facebook page — one of a half-dozen or so dedicated to the holiday — and hundreds of people had signed up with plans to celebrate in some way. Celebrations are as varied: Some cut root vegetables into squares, others make food in the shape of a square root symbol.

The last such day was five years ago, Feb. 2, 2004, which coincided with Groundhog Day. The next is seven years away, on April 4, 2016.

I'm partying... just not on the boards. ;) Course I'm not so sure what foods to make for square root day - pi day is much easier to cook for.

Dry saltines, a can of CheezWiz and a dozen packages of Twinkies....

(you freakin' math geek! :D )

Same as pi day, only you use a square pan, of course.

and a very pretty math geek streak it is too!

BTW, I'll tweak your math geek streak if I ever get a peek!
I'm more interrested in streaking math geeks.

Care to volunteer, ladies?

Just for the record, there are nine square root days in any century:

01/01/01
02/02/04
03/03/09
04/04/16
05/05/25
06/06/36
07/07/49
08/08/64
09/09/81

So, if you missed the celebration for the first two square root days this century, no sweat. All you have to do is live until 2101 and 2104.

Was hung over like a mofo for the first. Ah well.

Why wouldn't 10/10/2100 count? Really all that keeps it from being counted is the convention of abbreviating a year by its last two digits. or... or... my favorite one would be 12/12/2144, and it won't count. *pouts*

I hope that you will forgive me, but I couldn't resist. That last one is gross.

I wished a number of my students Happy Square Root day, and some of the "cool" kids had to have it explained to them. We had fun.

Don't forget the most significant factor of all square roots...the square root of 69 is 8 somethin'. :D

What do you do to celebrate square day?

For pi day you can ...
sing a little number that just goes on and on
run around and act irrational

What are some "square" things to do?
