For Pete's sake

Maybe there should be a "Texters Anonymous" group similar to AA or NA... or would that be crediting the little shits's lack of respect as a disease and thus give her an undeserved out? "I couldn't help it ... I'm addicted... It's a disease..." FACE-SLAP!

I heard about two girls last month with like 10,000+ text messages... I can't remember the exact numbers but it was insane.

Wauwatosa?

I'd probably wanna shoot myself if I couldn't text anymore too.

Also, if you can't manage a 14 year old, you have no business in a classroom full of them. That's what classroom management coursework is for - I know it's hard work but it can't be that hard in a town that lists one mall and no other features.

The fact that a cop issued a citation for this says more about this town than this kid. The school dept. website lists two academic departments, math and english, and all seasons of sports. This is pretty typical of my geographic region. We kinda get what we grow.

What is worse? The fact that she couldn't give up texting or that it took her teacher, the school security warden and a police officer to have her surrender her phone?

My daughter, who is in her third year of college, does a significant amount of communication through text messages. We have her on an unlimited texting plan for this reason. Most months she goes through a minimum of 1,000 messages She also generally uses up anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 minutes per month. Even with this much usage, though, she has never, ever, gone over her allotment of minutes per month because she is careful to do most of her phone time during the so-called "free" hours in the evening.

news link

Here I dug up that article. One girl was in the news for having 14,000+ messages in one month, only to be outdone by a girl who had 35,000+ text messages in a month. BUT the world record is 182,000+ text messages!! I'm sure the guy breaking the record was just sending stupid shit messages... but how can anyone have *that* much to say!

I think that girl needs to get a good switching and her phone taken away for a month or two.

Bad parenting really shows up in the teen years the most, doesn't it?

What are they going to do to her? They can't spank, they can't even touch her unless to defend themselves. It's not like the teacher can grab her arm and escort her out of the class - the school would get sued. Is she going to give her a stern talking to?

If I found out my child was texting or talking on the phone, in school, that phone would suddenly not be working. Ever. Again. And if they were refusing to stop and give up the phone they would be HATING LIFE. :D

I kind of feel bad for the girl.

If she had left the classroom she would have been picked up by the cops for ditching.

Only kids and prisoners can be incarcerated.

If you're actually being academically interesting and the whole culture around you is one in which you'd better pay attention or else you are in hugefreakingtrouble instead of one in which winning a football game is life's highest accomplishment, you don't have these problems to the extent that you're "helpless" that's my point. Iv'e got friends who teach in the 'hood, they teach completely new immigrant kids ESL they teach at-risk and they don't have to call the cops because to some extent or another they know what the hell they're doing and they're in schools that back them up at least marginally.

It's precisely because her parents *aren't* going to do what you'd do that this goes on.

Then you've got the whole culture to worry about.

Homeschooling!

Well, I dunno, I live in a pretty small town that's very quiet, so I doubt we'll have too many problems... Here's praying at least.

I know living here as a kid the worst thing I ever saw was a few teenage parties, which of course my parents didn't let me go to. Not that I really wanted to, most of the time. I wasn't ever interested in alcohol.

I am certainly going to put them in private school. The public school system here in Muskogee is deplorable. *shakes head*

I think there's a whole new wave of parents about your age who are disgusted with the failures that led to this current crop of bratty brats. I hear a lot of people talking as you do.

Wow, really?

That's promising. Maybe the future generations won't be so spoilt and ungrateful if we actually manage to raise our kids with values and work ethic.

And respect for elders, let us not forget that one!

Seriously.

I swear I have a permanent groove in my tongue from biting it SO much when Mister and I are out and see these kids treating their parents like crap.

I just want to grab them and take them home for some serious boot camp like discipline.

"Here, let me take Little Timmy off your hands. Call me in two weeks, you won't recognize him!"

Why? Because she's a spoiled brat, or that her parent(s) gave her no home training in basic respect for legitimate rules/laws?

.. returned to school, put in detention, and argued when told she couldn't text there either.

They call it emancipation for a reason. Both are allowed into free adult society to do as they will, and pay the consequences when they don't follow rules/laws. As for the kid in question, if she hasn't grasped the basic concept of here's a legitimate rule/law, follow it or suffer the consequences; the emancipation period between named states will be short indeed. If not, perhaps she'll clean the gene pool during a vehicular sudden stoppage event against a telephone pole while doing exactly as she pleases.

On that tangent, i've had two near miss head on collisions in the last year. The other driver, in both cases, had swerved into oncoming traffic while attempting to text. One of them was in a company owned vehicle, a utility van specifically. Most of the idiots that got their licenses during a Kmart blue light special can't talk on a cell and drive at the same time. Now, the least intelligent among them think they can text while doing so as well.

My daughter asked me once, when she was about six, "Mom? Why do other kids think they're the boss of their parents?"

From the mouth of babes.

Recently a law was passed about texting and driving.

I was absolutely aghast that such a law was required. That's on my 'things to talk to my children about before they can have a license' list.

I swear people get stupider and stupider.
