Valentine's Day Story Contest 2009 Reminder and Support Thread

I'm not going to make it in time.

I started my entry before Christmas but it's stalled. Apart from real life (and two-year-old granddaughter) getting in the way, I've been diverted on to another project - trying to write a libretto for a comic opera.

I'm not sure the libretto will get anywhere. My Valentine's Day entry MIGHT be completed for next year.

Thats a shame mate after you were the ring leader of this here thread...

When you do get it finished im sure everyone will be keen to read it

I don't know if I'm going to make it in time, but I'm trying really hard. Less than five hours to go... I think.

Last call, y'all. Only a couple of hours left to submit, and then only a week to finish RVCn.

Almost done. I'm gonna get crucified. Romance story with no sex. It wasn't my intention. I wanted there to be sex, but the characters just wouldn't have it. They aren't ready.

The same thing happened to me. Right at the end, they had their hands all over each other, and were obviously going to make love, but they chased me away before going into the bedroom. It's not unheard of, but it's rare for me to write a story with no sex.

BTW: Has there been a sweep lately? My story has ben posted for a week, and no votes have been eliminated. They're mostly 4's, which would probably be let stand anyhow.

I've only seen a vote or two vanish, and I assume that those were from normal, everyday housekeeping sweeps.

I don't know that a no-sex story in Romance is necessarily a call for line on the left, one cross each. That's one of the categories where the readers are pretty forgiving of that sort of thing. It's supposed to be about the romance, not the bump n' grind :D

Then again, those reading from the contest page might not be regular readers of the category

I know that my no-sex entry in another forgiving category, sci-fi/fantasy, bombed like crazy a few winters back *laugh* ( Though I did get the textual equivalent of breathless, blissful sighs in emails, making up for the score )

Well, hell...I tried to get it done in time, was down to the wire -- thought I had about an hour when I was ready to hit "submit" but I guess the deadline wasn't for Pacific Standard Time, LOL...

Ah well, like Ogg, I had started, stalled... and then I started, stalled, started, stalled -- like trying to learn how to drive a damn stick shift. Never have mastered that skill.

Still, I like how the story came out, and I submitted it anyway, even though it's too late for the contest. When it's posted and the contest fever has died down a bit, I'll link to it in my signature -- give it a read, and let me know what you think. :D

Good luck to all of you who know how to drive a stick shift and get to your destination in time without stalling along the way! Looking forward to reading the submissions...

I lost one vote and my score went up but I still need the minimum votes to qualify, more so now.

There haven't been any large sweeps. I've lost a few votes here and there but no large volumn. Lost 8 overnight on one story. and 2 on the other. Neither story has made any movement in averages. Reads have increases and new votes pretty much get washed away. The Vaccum commeth. LOL

My story, Welcome To The Site Of Literotica posted yesterday. It's loosely based on the song by the Eagles, Hotel California. It's supposed to be a funny take that Literotica is housed in a mental institution in California. Several of the people who post here are thinly disguised. I thought it was funny but apparently, Scouries thought it wasn't. Hmm, maybe that means that it was funny.

hm, quite a few votes so far, though not enough to qualify yet, score is so-so... only two comments so far, but some email feedback... though in one case i don't know how to react to it. usually i always answer the feedback if it has a return adress, but in this case i don't know what to say...

Freddie you weren't particularily funny as BostonsFuckedupWriter, and you're not funny as PostiveStinker. Give it a break.

And whose sock puppet are you Sammy Sap?

You have me confused with that great writere, Bostonfictionwriter, the one who doesn't write stories here anymore. I only wish I could write as well.

Now, on the humor note, perhaps, you could direct me to your humorous stories to show me how to write satire. Otherwise, you're just an empty head, someone who doesn't contribute anything to this site but to bash writers who do.

Bye, loser.

I've been reading the stories on this site for a couple of months now, and the Valentine's Day competition prompted me to actually try and write one myself. One of my New Year resolutions (apart from the inevitable "try to lose some weight") is to try doing something new each month. So February's "something new" is to write a short story and put it on the Web for all of you to rip to shreds!

I hadn't written a short story since my school days, and even then I hated it as I found it so hard to think of ideas for the plot and I always struggled with fleshing out the characters. But I thought I'd give it a bash - nothing ventured, etc. as they say.

I was astonished how the story just poured out once I'd got a plot outline in my head. I mashed together several workplace fantasies of mine and it just seemed to come together. Three hours of frantic keyboard bashing and it was pretty much there, needing only a little polish (well in my eyes at least - but everyone loves their offspring no matter how ugly they might seem to others!). A submit, a rejection (regarding punctuation of direct speech), a revision, a resubmission and it was up there on the site. I'm quite chuffed!

The result is "Listening In."

I did it for the experience. I'm not expecting to rate highly. Any comments, suggestions, criticisms, etc. gratefully received, as I enjoyed it so much I think I'll try writing some more.

Now there's the Earth Day competition to think about next. Hmm... Earth..., soil..., archaeology..., fertility idols...?

Dear Lee,

I'm a new writer. What are these minimum votes you are talking about? How many do I need?

For a theme contest you need to have 25 votes(after the sweeps are finished) to place in the top 3 spots. If you are a new author and you posted in a low read category, this can be a serious problem.

To qualify as a monthly contest winner, one has to have a minimum of 50 votes. To qualify to win one of the "special" contests, such as this one, one has to have a minimum of 25 votes. The winner is determined by who has the highest score within the group of authors that has at least the minimum required number of votes.

Edited to add: Darn it, loganforester beat me to it. lol

Dear Mr. Forester,
I'd like to thank you for helping out Mr. Chambers with his responses. I appreciate all the feedback I can get.

Apparently, I'm screwed, and not in a loving-wife kind of way. I'm never going to have that many votes for my letters, but would like to tell everyone this has been a blast! Truely.

My Dear Ms. C.,
Your response of my question just drives the point home, or lack of points, that I'm not going to win. You can all sit back and take a deep breath because I won't be a threat to your competition. Nice work, writers.

Don't lose heart, sweetie. The competition is fierce for Og's last place award. You may still be a winner!

A welcome  for the little newbie from the good little witch.

Well, mine is not doing as badly as I thought. It's not in contention to win, but it has a decent score.

Took a hit on decreased votes on both stories. Lost 8 more votes on story one and 24 on story two since I last checked. :(
Gained a few points on story one and story 2 stayed the same.
It was expected and am expecting a few bigger hits before it's all over.
Good luck to the rest of you. :)
DG

Made a mistake on my vote count. Story one went from 450 to 340. Guess I lost 110 vote. Geez!
