We watched "Much Ado About Nothing" last night and I noticed those lyrics for the first time. I had no idea what they meant, so I looked it up. Anyone else know what this silly nonsense is really all about, besides me? Quite humorous.

no.. do tell.. !! MY Fil used to always quote that..

"Hey nonny, nonny ..and a hot cha-cha.." or something to that affect..?

and in reference to my youngest dauhter.. so i am quite curious.. of course maybe he was ignorant of what he was repeating...

If you mean just "hey nonny nonny", it means, AFAIK, nothing more than "fa-lala-lala-lala-la-la" does in Deck the Halls. Willie needed something that rhymed with "bonny". And was probably hung over and had an hour til the Queen's deadline.

Whimsical playful nonsense. Which is the entire point of Much Ado.

Hey nonny nonny and a hot cha cha are lyrics from a Gene Kelly song. I forget the name of it. But he lifted it from Shakespeare. I know it goes back before Shakespeare and I was hoping a few Brits that hang around here might enlighten me further.

It true origin is sketchy.

Enough suspense. Nonny is vagina and nonny nonny is well, you know, enjoying a vagina, fucking. Ha.

Anyone a big fan of Christopher Guest like me? Nigel Tufnil of Spinal Tap. He has made a bunch of movies lately with Harry Shearer and Michael McKean and one in particular is The Mighty Wind, which I am convinced refers to a big fart. Anyway in this movie, the three above actors are playing the roles of folk musicians from the 60s, The Folksmen. And in one of the extra scenes on the disc they do this song, we think is called Corn Wine.

It has a bunch of hey nonny nonnies and nonny ninny Os and the like. We love the song and sing along whenever we watch the movie. Of course, I had no idea I was singing about a vagina and fucking, which makes it all the funnier to me.

Gene Kelly's, "Fit As A Fiddle"

Better Lyrics:
Soon the church bells will be ringin'
And we'll march with Ma and Pa
How the church bells will be ringin'
Put your hey nonny-nonny in her hot cha-cha!

Original Lyrics:
Soon the church bells will be ringin'
And we'll march with Ma and Pa
How the church bells will be ringin'
With a hey nonny nonny and a hot-cha-cha

It's also in Once Upon a Mattress, sung by Princess Fred (Carol Burnette's role) as she begins the song "Shy."

"Hey nonny nonny is it you?"

:)

I suppose you've seen the crew in Best in Show. If not, you're in for a treat.

I am so glad I found that sex dictionary in my search. I know I can use that! I mean, how many ways can you describe a penis and vagina without some assistance. And those bawdry English folks were masters.

William Shakespeare had a wonderful bawdiness about his comedic works that has kept people entertained for centuries. Why, because the plays are about love and sex. He could have rhymed bonny with whatever he chose, if it was only nonsense. No, he liked to keep his audiences entertained with clever inuendos.

I wish you all a lovely weekend of nonny nonnying. Nonny nonny O. The O must be what we imagine it means, the big O, Orgasm. LOL

Jomar,

Oh sure. We own all those Christopher Guest movies. Best in Show is a good one but the movies with songs and lyrics are even better. I am a movie musical nut. I got the Rocky Horror Picture Show for Christmas. What a musical that is. Busby Berkely is my all time favorite.

Hey nonny nonny!

nonny-nonny:

Or: hey-nonny-no / nonny-no , from the 16 th century to the 19 th century (Victorian era), a euphemism for the vagina and sexual activity. See vagina for synonyms.
Huh.

With all the other much more blantantly obvious sexual allusions that Much Ado is filled to the brim with, I never thought that would be one of them. It seemed so conspicious amongs all the horns, plowing, poking and mounting going on on every other page of that script.

Liar,

Ain't that the truth! I don't think I have ever seen Much Ado About Nothing, I am ashamed to admit, and I laughed my head off. There were so many sexual references, it was difficult to catch them all!

It was the Kenneth Branagh production and Micheal Keaton, who plays the comedic relief, as if it needed it, was just hilarious. Brought back memories of Beetlejuice. And it was good to see Keanu Reeves in a part that I could easily hate for I do not enjoy his performances very much anyway. (Except for Bill And Ted or I Love You to Death, where he seemed to play himself.)

Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson were wonderful and Denzel Washington was excellent. Great cast, great story, well done.

My son justed reminded me of the Mel Brook's Men in Tights part of the movie with the black guys doing the hey nonny nonny and a ho ho ho song! Do they mean that one kind of 'ho', here?

Has this little joke of Shakespeare's eluded the general public for lo these many years? Me thinks, aye, tis so.
