Neither I nor anyone else knows how long it will take for the economy and the market to pick up. Stock prices are fairly "friendly" ( as my acquaintence, John Neff, used to say ) but that doesn't absolutely preclude the possibility that they could decline from here. Our economy has become sooooooo consumer driven that it may take time for the restoration of the confidence necessary to get people to open up their wallets once again. Part of me does wonder if this downturn is masking a fundamentally sick economy— one that doesn't actually make anything anymore and sometimes seems wholly based on paper-shuffling, suing each other, professional sports and other superficial activity. I admit to worrying that people in this country don't understand that we'll all end up freezing in the dark in the middle of a pristine environment if everybody becomes environmental scientists, marine biologists, tort lawyers, politicians, pundits and community activists ( whatever that is ).
