Holy Shades of Fight Club, Batman!

A former Beverly Hills, Calif. liposuction doctor claimed to have the environment's best interests at heart when he began fueling his and his girlfriend's SUVs with human fat sucked out of his patients.

Unfortunately the practice was illegal, according to California state health officials. An investigation by the California public health department revealed that Craig Alan Bittner created "lipodiesel" from his patients' fat and used it to power his Ford SUV and his girlfriend's Lincoln Navigator, Forbes.com reported this week.

"The vast majority of my patients request that I use their fat for fuel — and I have more fat than I can use," Bittner wrote on his now defunct Web site. "Not only do they get to lose their love handles or chubby belly but they get to take part in saving the Earth."

California law forbids the use of human medical waste to power vehicles. Bittner's practice, Beverly Hills Liposculpture, closed in November. Several former patients have filed lawsuits against the doctor, claiming he allowed his unlicensed girlfriend and an assistant to perform procedures, causing mistakes that left the patients disfigured, attorney Andrew Besser, who represents three of the former patients, told Forbes.com.
From Faux News which got it from Forbes.com, so I don't know how much credit to give it....

Several dive buddies run their 3/4 T pickups on left over french fry oil. The conversion costs around $4500 but once done, you can usually get the oil for free if you know enough burger joints. Needless the payback time is quite fast, especially for guys in the construction business who work out of their trucks. Of course, according to the tax-suckers in Sacramento, such hijinks are totally illegal (mostly do to the fact that no one pays road taxes on their fries) no matter how evironmentally sound they may be or even how good this is for national security. Human fat, though, . . . Ewwwwww!!

There is a refinery outside Wilmington, NC that used to be a crude oil refinery but now only refines old cooking oil, chicken fat, etc. I think human remains are stil classified as bio hazzards however. :D

Any bets on how long before someone starts to market Soylent Greengas, the truly renewable fuel?

Using used frying oil is legal in the UK as long as you register for, and pay, taxes on the fuel.

One of our TV self-sufficiency experts converts frying oil to a product to run his 4x4. The process is fairly simple but requires space. The paperwork isn't so simple and the process has to be inspected to ensure that the tax regulations are met.

How terribly terribly government of them. "You are a free person and can do anything you want. And here's the bill for it!"

Perhaps someone hasn't figured out which palms to grease, eh?

Savannah's River Street trolley has been converted to use a fuel made from grease generated by area restaurants. Seriously. What clogs your arteries may someday help clear up traffic arteries.

Now if only some genius could come up with a safe use for spilled coal sludge...

:(

Perhaps it could be gathered up and delivered to W's and Cheney's retirement homes as a gift from the American people: Do it yourself driveways. Just remove water. :D

It would certainly add an incentive to stay out of the traps.

I'm guessing they will take a lot of lies. ;)

faux news is good news...

I love this line. It conjures up some interesting plot bunny precedents that led to the "law."

A while back when I used to watch Star Trek it occurred to me that you could probably adjust the settings of the transporters so as to retain a certain number of fat cells from everybody who went through them. A naturally thin person's settings, of course, would differ from that of someone who had trouble keeping the weight off. The fat cells could be used to power the lights, if people had issues about them going into the replicators...it would cost less to power the ship, nobody'd get fat, everybody would win.
