Feh, that should have been; "Fighting Hollywood Racism"

For anyone interested in fighting against the "invisible minority" version of racism so prevalent in popular entertainment, the new movie "The Last Airbender" has been cast with an all Caucasian cast.

This Nickelodeon series is based on Asian and Inuit cultures. It's not as if there was a lack of Asian actors available. The cast is all unknowns, so that's not the reason for this decision.

Hollywood only looks Progressive when there's a bottom-line advantage. No doubt this cast was chosen because they agreed to work for minimum SAG scale. The place hasn't changed one whit since An Empire of Their Own and considering how ingrown it is, won't.

YOu don;'t think ethnic actors wouldn't agree to work for scale? Hell, ethnic actors would love to get ANY work!

I have a different theory;

Joss Whedon's first series Firefly was dropped after one season, even though it was very popular.

It would seem that the demographics showed that too many women liked it.

The advertising slots are more valuable when the demographic is male-oriented. The advertisers believe that guys spend bigger money than women do.

In any case, protests mean that at least we can say we did.

Well what did he expect when he put Firefly on Spike? The whole damned station is aimed at Beevus and Butthead. Hot Mama loves Firefly, too. But she won't buy what the advertisers on that station are hawking. My protest as a senior citizen who hasn't seen a Nickleodeon show in 20 years isn't going to make much impact, I fear. However, I will call them names.

Well good hope, then. Paramount must be as obnoxious a studio as there is. Didn't they produce Triumph of the Will?

Not being snarky here, just clearing a couple things up...

Firefly didn't start on Spike but on Fox. Who totally mishandled the series from the beginning, forcing them to put together and shoot The Train Job as a first episode despite an already completed pilot that did a much better job of introducing the characters. The scheduling was inconsistent, the promotion non-existent...

In short, the show was only reluctantly believed in and never given a real chance.

As to the thing about it being Whedon's first? No, actually, it is highly doubtful they would have even got the episodes we do have shot were it not for Joss' success with Buffy and Angel... which also succeeded basically despite the suits instead of because of them.

The show really has thrived on DVD, winning most of it's devoted following (including me) after it had already been canceled. The appetite created led to the movie Serenity.

There are other Browncoats here in the AH besides me...

The box set is sitting right next to my mouse pad :D

You could program a whole network with just the good shows that Fox screwed up and screwed over. They cancelled Titus when it was number one in it's time slot just because an executive thought it was too crass. The live action version of The Tick never got to stay on the same night two weeks in a row to even have a chance at gaining an audience.

As far as Hollywood racism goes, it never makes any sense. David Carradine instead of Bruce Lee in Kung Fu?

"Brilliant!" - the Guinness guys

Actually, there are a lot of shows that are geared to women. But they're mostly on in the daytime.

STELLA

Youre one of those people who, when they see anything, see its asshole and see nothing else. It sux to be you.

If there were programs gearing towards me, there would be a lot more full-frontal nudity of hunky men... *drool*:)
If there were programs geared towards me, there'd be a lot more frontal nudity, period. And behindal, too.
Both sexes.
Multi-racial. :D

V_M wrote a very eloquent letter-- but I'd worry that he'd get outed if he posted it here!

Screw V-M (metaphorically)! I'm "outing" his ass!

V-M is a non-homophobic, straight guy who thinks that everyone has the right to live as they see fit, within their own moral framework. If what you do in your life doesn't hurt others he will leave you to choose as you wish. Additionally, he is a nice guy who, while quite intellegent, doesn't use his intellect to insult, deride or otherwise demean others with whom he may disagree!

There! That oughta fix his wagon! The Cad! Ha!

(did I miss anything?)

I guess you showed him! :rose:

YOu're on a roll this morning!
(are you thinking about... sewing, by any chance? Embroidery?)

I think she's doing some serious daydreaming with Amy at the office and the kids getting in the way at home. Retreat into one's inner libido, that's the ticket.
