The Buddy List is an artifact of a previous version of the background software (I know there's a more precise term for this; so sue me, techheads ) that supports the Lit bulletin board. In the previous version, you could tell by looking at your buddy list which of your buddies was online at the time. It had a couple of other functionalities that I never used so I've forgotten them. These days the Buddy List seems to be as useful as a prehensile tail.
