I just saw the umpteenth commercial for greenbean casserole for the holidays.

Time to pony up and tell the truth.

Do ya REALLY like greenbean casserole or are you just being polite (and thus prolonging the agony) when you actuallty eat that crap?

Let me say this here and now...if you come to my house with greenbean casserole...I will sick the cat on you...and then turn the hose on you as well.

Just saying.

Yuck.

Word up! I much prefer cauliflower casserole, with lots of cheese and bread crumbs. Yummy! :D

Funny. I found myself standing last night and holdng half a can of those shredded fried onion things you always put on top of the greenbean-mushroom soup casserole and wondering what the hell else you can use those for--and then I tried to remember when we'd actually had the casserole (Thanksgiving--and someone else brought it).

Isn't that the only stuff that gives the casserole any crunch whatsoever? Without it, it's just a bunch of soggy squishy stuff.

I actually don't necessarily mind the casserole, but I can think of a gazillion better vegetable side dishes than that stuff.

Those onions go great on burgers, yanno. As to the green bean cassarole, why must there be any cassaroles anywhere but church potlucks? I don't like greenbean cassaroles, broccoli cassaroles, tuna cassaroles . . . fuggedaboudit!

Your cat like greenbean casserole?

Never had it. Honestly. No holiday meal I've ever been to has ever had it on the menu and if one did that I can't recall, well, I didn't eat it. I'm not a big greenbean fan myself. My fave holiday veggie recipe are brussel sprouts, steamed tender, then sautéed in a little oil with shallots and garlic, orange zest and thyme. Saute with a little salt till lightly browned, remove from heat, add a quarter cup grand mariner and, when the flames subside, a tablespoon of butter. Toss and serve.

Yummy.

Burgers? I think I remember those--maybe sometime back in 1986.

Please, mum, (he said hat in hand and looking pathetic) might I have some, too?

Had brussel sprouts tonight--but they weren't anywhere near as sexy as those.

I actually do like it, but only if my grandma makes it, for some reason.
But, we don't have it anymore because it's loaded with MSG and extra carbs that no one really needs. I started making canned garden green beans with ham and onions. Nothing beats that.

shredded fried onions *yummmmm* now those I like. Sprinkle them with cheese on twice baked potato. But green bean casserole.. take it or leave it.. its one of those foods is on the table and I'm really hungry I'll probably eat without thinking about it. We don't make it though.

It's good if you make it with string beans (the long, thin sort) and homemade mushroom soup. And never ever any onion things. *shudder* My MIL makes it with canned beans, canned soup, and those crunchy onion things - I won't eat it. But mine it divine! ;)

This year I found the best recipe for this dish on a vegetarian site. It used fresh green beans and a lovely homemade mushroom gravy using marsala wine with crushed croutons for topping. The best I have ever tasted and it will be the regular side dish for Thanksgiving from now on. Nothing beats my grandmother's recipe for cornboread dressing, though.

Hooray Brussels!

Brussel sprout lovers unite! I will happily share my brussels :D

 Love, love, love the brussels  The recipe there is very easy (saute 2 and 1/2 pounds steamed-tender brussels [halved if you like] in some canola oil for 3-4 minutes till browned, add one shallot, one garlic clove chopped fine, saute for another minute or so, then add the zest one orange and a tablespoon of thyme leaves. Off the heat, add quarter cup Grand Mariner--which should flame, let flames subside, add tablespoon butter, serve). And it's actually called "The Only Way I'll Eat 'Em" Brussels recipe. Created by someone who didn't like brussels so you can imagine how great it is for those of us who do like 'em. I made this recipe for a guy who said he didn't care for brussels, and he loved 'em.

It's even easier now that you can steam the brussels up in a microwave rather than having to cook them on a stove top before tossing them into the pan.

<slurp!> MMmmmmmm!!!!

The Babe and I both love Brussels sprouts. Around here, they go into pot roast or just steamed and served with a little butter.

Ya'll MUST be pulling my leg! Brussels sprouts? OMG, If I want to eat cabbage, I'll wait till it grows up, damnit!

Those things should be locked away with the other mutant veggies like rutabagas and parsnips!

brussel sprouts with chestnuts is really nice too.

Brussels with chestnuts sounds exceptional! I'll have to try that. Y'just steam them all together and call it a dish? Or do you prepare the chestnuts by boiling separately and then drizzle them over the steamed Brussels?

I like my green beans steamed with lots of garlic. lemon juice and butter.

I can do without the casserole.

Homemade mushroom soup ... DROOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!

Mmmm I love brussels sprouts! I was a weird kid - I loved almost all veggies. Cooked spinach, peas, asparagus, all the weird ones kids are supposed to hate. Me, I wouldn't eat tomatoes (those gooey insides *shudder*) or green peppers.

And I now have a daughter who won't touch a potato with a ten foot pole. Not even french fries.

I swear she isn't mine.

At last, a rational person!

I can't even eat stuff I like if brussel sprouts are on the menu -- or even just on somebody else's menu and close enough I can smell them; they totally destroy my appetitie and make me nauseous.

Brussel sprouts are one of the "foods" on my not-even-to-survive list.

Green Bean Casserole is one of those coporate recipes Campbell's Soup has foisted on the american public to sell more soups as ingredients rather than as meals; I am surprised that anyone actually likes it. :p I think it is only a semi-popular holiday dish because it's something a child can make without screwing it up more than the basic nauseating recipe calls for. :p

I'm just posting again to confess my love for brussel sprouts as well.
