who do you contact when a story has been rejected for an invalid reason?

seriously. i had a story rejected for underage sex when ages were avoided and it was implied that they were seniors in high school and, therefore, quite easily could be assumed to be 18. i don't think it should have been rejected on this basis, but i see no way to contact the site editors to discuss this. should i just pm laurel or what? anyone know?

When in doubt, specify the age. The site will not publish anything even remotely underage, and even if you think it was 'implied' by stating they were in high school, the editors may not have thought that sufficient. You would be best advised to go back in and edit the story to specify age and then re-submit.

The final authority is Laurel. Send her a PM, NOT an e-mail. Explain your position and see what she says. If there's any suggestion at all that they might be underaged, she will probably require you to specify.

Probably not-- there isn't really a "they;" there's Laurel plus one or two part-time helpers AFIK. This site is very busy, and she can't spend huge amounts of time on any one person-- not even her friends anymore.

well, i've sent the pm and edited out what i think has to the issue, because it can't be the main story. there was a line about a character masturbating when it was implied she was either in middle school or a freshman. i'm guessing that has to be it. i can't think of anything else that could be it besides a couple quick mentions of being fingered by a boyfriend which i also edited. i didn't think they'd be an issue and, honestly, i'd forgotten all about them until rereading it. hopefully they'll accept it now and if laurel responds to my pm maybe i can figure out if that's it. it's a prequel to another story i have here. i really want it to be posted here.

They may be more specific, but from what you've posted, I think they've been specific enough. Most high school seniors aren't 18 yet. If you haven't clearly dispensed with that in your story, your story is just pushing the edge of acceptability and you've found yourself over the edge.

Your question is one on being rejected for an invalid reason. If you are just trying to circumvent the age 18 rule, your story wasn't rejected for an invalid reason. I've had two stories initially rejected for invalid reasons (the story just didn't do what the rejection notice said it did). All I had to do was resubmit with the polite note that the story didn't meet the rejection standards--and, Shazam, the stories went up without further problem.

On the age 18 rule, I have a few stories that are historically based in a time and culture where 18 being the age of consent just has no contextural meaning. I slipped into the story that the characters had reached their adulthood (without further discussing what that meant for that time/place) and didn't mention age at all (or dwell on age as a turnon element, which is what I think is significant here)--and they posted without problem.

i no longer think that's the issue at all. i'm fairly certain the issue was with the masturbation line, because i've also had story on this site where the characters could easily be interpretted to be underage and it's still here. it was even rejected because i sent in the draft where ages were listed instead of the edited version where all direct references to their age was edited out. once i realized my mistake and sent in the edited version it was accepted without issue. the orginal said the characters were 14 and 15. i still get feedback for it on occasion. it was fifth place in the lesbian category for a bit. i was always proud of that.
