Amsterdam to close many brothels, marijuana cafes
By TOBY STERLING, Associated Press Writer

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – Amsterdam unveiled plans Saturday to close brothels, sex shops and marijuana cafes in its ancient city center as part of a major effort to drive organized crime out of the tourist haven.

The city is targeting businesses that "generate criminality," including gambling parlors, and the so-called "coffee shops" where marijuana is sold openly. Also targeted are peep shows, massage parlors and souvenir shops used by drug dealers for money-laundering.

"I think that the new reality will be more in line with our image as a tolerant and crazy place, rather than a free zone for criminals" said Lodewijk Asscher, a city council member and one of the main proponents of the plan.

The news comes just one day after Amsterdam's mayor said he would search for loopholes in new rules laid down by the national government that would close marijuana cafes near schools citywide. The measures announced Saturday would affect about 36 coffee shops in the center itself — a little less than 20 percent of the city total.

Asscher underlined that the city center will remain true to its freewheeling reputation.

"It'll be a place with 200 windows (for prostitutes) and 30 coffee shops, which you can't find anywhere else in the world — very exciting, but also with cultural attractions," he said. "And you won't have to be embarrassed to say you came."

Under the plan announced Saturday, Amsterdam will spend euro30 million to euro40 million ($38 million to $51 million) to bring hotels, restaurants, art galleries and boutiques to the center. It will also build new underground parking areas.

Amsterdam already had plans to close many brothels and some coffee shops, but plans announced Saturday go further.

Asscher said the city would reshape the area, using zoning rules, buying out businesses and offering assistance to upgrade stores. The city has shut brothels and sex clubs in the past by relying on a law allowing the closure of businesses with bookkeeping irregularities.

Prostitution will be allowed only in two areas in the district — notably De Wallen ("The Walls"), a web of streets and alleys around the city's medieval retaining dam walls. The area has been a center of prostitution since before the city's golden shipping age in the 1600s.

Prostitution was legalized in the Netherlands in 2000, formalizing a long-standing tolerance policy.

Marijuana is technically illegal in the Netherlands, but prosecutors won't press charges for possession of small amounts. Coffee shops are able to sell it openly.

***Sounds like a good thing. I have yet to make it back to the land of my ancestors, but I have HIGH hopes...

Wow, that is sad. Why isn't Marijuana legal? I'm don't smoke but many of my friends do. I just don't see an issues with people who smoke. How many american's are in jail due to this drug and the laws around it?

I do find this interesting, goverment taking tighter control.

I don't know how many are in jail because of possession of a small amount of MJ, but even one is too many. It's almost harmless, much less harmful than liquor. I say "almost" because it might lead to a certain loss of ambition. That is either caused by MJ or often exists in the persons who smoke or otherwise use it. In any event, it is not a dangerous drug, compared to liquor.

Marijuana is illegal because the pushers fund the right-wingers to keep it illegal. Just like the bootleggers used to pay to keep prohibition illegal. There's too much money to be made in illegal pot.

how many are killed via drunk drivers? I just think that the law is silly but its big business on both sides. my friends in CA and TX tell me that its dangerous to drive into mexico as the drug cartels have set up shop. I think it have become such a big business for the DEA that they would never allow MJ to become legal.

jumping sujects on this a little, but I heared a rumor that the kennedy's are still making money on scotch that comes into the country?

I think the Dutch are pretty tolerant people, and Amsterdam makes a lot of money off the tourst trade. I noticed that it was a very limited "crackdown" only effecting the 'criminal elements', those who are causeing trouble or cooking the books to avoid taxes.

I spent a weekend in Amsterdam once. Very interesting place.

That's one reason and another is the liquor companies. MJ would be a powerful competitor in the recreational drug market. Personally, I see no good reason to keep it illegal. It reminds me of Prohibition because that was almost as dumb a law.

All Scotch comes into the county, doesn't it? I always had the imnpression that, to be called Scotch, it had to come from Scotland.

Slowly but surely more states decriminalize marijuana use or provide medicinal marijuana for patients like me, and when it reaches 26 states, the federal law will change.

This last election, more states came on board, Massachusetts and Michigan. Keep the momentum going and we will make it there eventually, much later than I first anticipated back in the 60s, that is for sure.

And Doc, I do not agree that all growers are funding "the let's keep it illegal network". I know alot of growers who would like to see it become much more available to the masses for the sheer benefit it brings to human beings. Much better than pharmacueticals. Not all of us are greedy, sir.

It's weird really that so few countries allow cannabinoids as prescribed medication. After all, most do allow opiates and morphines.

My ex's radiation therapy doctor said, "The difference between marijuana and morphine? I can prescribe you, morphine, and marijuana, I can't."

In my case, I'd probably prefer marijuana. All it does is put me to sleep. Morphine makes me sick.

I dunno about morphine, but a little hemp never hurt anybody. Decriminalizing it would eliminate law-enforcement so they could do important things...like waiting in speed traps. :D

No. I'm talking about the big cartels. The little growers of medical marijuana don't have the money to influence public opinion.

As I keep saying, I hope they make tobacco illegal.

I'll make a freakin' mint!

I agree, Doc, it is the big guys. But someday, the little guys will outnumber the big guys and they will have to go away because we are providing ourselves and no longer need them. I pray.

Ending the failed war on drugs would save the U.S. about 48 billion a year (combined state and federal spending, including cost of incarceration). And that's before we start taxing legal pot.

It can't possibly happen. It makes too much sense and is so simple.

Amsterdam: Take a clue.

Edited to add: This week America celebrates the 80th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition. One vice down, two to go.

Decrimializing pot would make too much sense for the Govt. to do it and Cut into the Drug Cartels base market.
Then there would be the Hemp farms and the whole foundation of Papermaking would change and cotton prices would fall and we'd havea source of oil to replace Petroleum for Bio-Disel.

No it would be too radical, unles we hada candidate who offered real Change!

Whether pot, the drug, should be illegal or not is one thing. But the thing about making industrial hemp production illegal is a political mess. You'd have to smoke a spliff the size if an SUV to get a buzz from it. I read once that ordinary Rye stems have more stimulants.

But it is, technically, the same kind of plant. And no politician can afford to be known as the "pot guy", if he wants to get reelected. It's a deal-breaker for a big enough percentage of the voters. Not a majority, I think, but many enough to tip the scales. It's the same dilemma that meets a politician who wants to promote same sex rights. It's political suicide in many places to be the "sodomy guy". Not because everyone's against it, but because those who are, would vote for Corky the Communist Clown if he was anti-gay.

that I do not know, but I don't know if they have stock in a company or if Joe kennedy set some type of deal up for all companies

It is even a risk to admit the truth of being a total pot head on LIT. Some will say my paranoia comes from pipe induced thoughts. Instead of the cold hard facts I can produce to support my paranoia. LOL

And being a gay supporter is just as lethal up here. I live at the junction of Slim Pickensville and Butt Crack Central. The locals love their alcohol and drugs, just not gay men. Gay women are perfectly okay, though. LOL

lol on being a gay supporter.....don't we all have the right to be married, pay more taxes and become miserable? lol bad joke. what really irks me is when someone says that being Gay is a choice. how can one decide who he or she is attracted to?

a man or woman should be allowed to marry a man or woman.... but i think the big issue about Prop 8 in CA was economics and fear.
