Okay, so I did it. I bought a Magic Jack. I have been using it for the past two months and now know all the in's and out's. You do need a broadband connection - either DSL or Cable.

Pro's:
The up front cost was $39.95.
The price included the first year phone bill, $19.95.
Subsequent phone bills (only once a year) are $19.95.
Voice mail alerts you via email.
911 is active.
You get free voice mail, free call waiting, free caller ID.

What you get:
Free local and long distance calls in the US and Canada.
Sound quality As good as the phone company.
The ability to use your current phones. (I'm currently using a base station with 3 remotes)

I have yet to have any problems with making or receiving calls. Sound quality has been good to great.

Con's:
It uses a USB port on you computer.
In order for the phone to work the computer has to be on and logged in.
When receiving or making a call the Magic Jack interface on the computer pop's up. This can be annoying if you're doing something, like playing a game, and some one in the house makes a call.
(There is supposed to be a way to make the Magic Jack interface into a service so it won't popup - I have the instructions but haven't taken the time to try it)[eventually I will get a thin client running xp and hook it up to that machine]
Every once in awhile the sound quality goes down the tubes. (remedy is to restart the magic jack software)

I have found not paying a monthly bill (anywhere from $24.95 to $95.00) very pleasurable. And when I move I can keep the same number or change it all by myself online. The first time there is no charge. The next time and thereafter there will be a $10.00 charge.

So who else uses this service?

Who has looked into it and thought not for me?

I may look into using one if/when my phone bill goes up, but at the moment I'm paying $8 a month for my home phone through my cable company (with free long distance throughout the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico). It's more per year than what you're paying, but the cost is negligible, and I don't have to deal with the issues you're describing.

I also use an internet phone service. I definitely like that my phone bills are lower. I am paying $29.95/month however but it includes everything incl. long distance.

My main gripes are that if my internet goes down, we have no phone. (We have cell phones, so not a huge issue). Also, I find that sometimes it can take time to get a signal to call out. Quality can really suck sometimes too. People complain that when they are talking to us they get a terrible echo and can hear their voices repeated back to them. I have called home and have had the same problem. It is very distracting.

On the plus side...no more telemarketers!

I'd feel a lot better about it if they didn't market it like they market Bobby Mays' OxyClean and the Sham-Wow. I don't trust their spokesperson at all, and on TV the product has the look of some made-in-Formosa fall-apart-in-a-month piece of crap.

I figured it would interfere with my PC, though, so I'm not interested at this point.

Is this going to put Vonage out of business? They're the same deal, aren't they?

Are you making fun of $19.95 Land? $19.95 Land is the most wonderful place on Earth! You get a whole set of knives (including chef's and steak knives!) for only $40! You get items that clean, blend, cook and now, apparently, connect you to the universe...all for $19.95 and that's not all!

I love $19.95 Land. It's magic. :D

Best advertising line ever from TV sales land?

My nominee:

"And it really, REALLY WORKS!"

First: The MagicJack hardware is fairly well built and if all else fails you have an 18mb flash drive.

Second: It really doesn't interfere with everyday, normal operation of the PC. Yes the popup interface is annoying but easy enough to deal with. I have not noticed it slowing my machine down (and I play some pretty intensive FPS games). Nor has it interfered with watching episodes of TV shows or working on my writing.

Third: I think Vonage hooks up to your cable modem, not your PC. (If anyone uses it correct me if I'm wrong.)

"It's made in Germany and you know the Germans make good stuff."

Ya see, that make me perk right up! :D

But you're talking to the woman who once bought a $1400 vacuum cleaner from a door to door salesman.

I really am a sucker.
