So it looks like Al Franken might actually be a senator, if the news about the recount in Minnesota continues to trend well for him.

Which got me thinking.

Nothing against Al, but...

How about Robin Williams? Billy Crystal? Chris Rock?

I mean, if we could get these guys elected? Imagine how the ratings for C-Span would go up!

I mean, if Congress is gonna be a joke anyway...

Of course, there are those who think that Franken is stealing the election, but that's another story.

Dave Chappelle would do wonders for congress, depending on which character would show up.

When we embrace clowns as leaders we make it easier for conquerors.

I think Al Franken will make a fully competent senator. It doesn't matter what you do for a living, as an American you have the same rights as anyone else to run for office, with the same chance of success or failure. If he gets in I think a lot of people will be surprised by how well he does.

Well, if Minnesota could have Jesse "The Body" Ventura, a Professional heavyweight wrestler, as a governor, why couldn't they have a comedy writer as a senator?

Franken is a nut!

I'm remembering something I read a few years ago, about one of the small city-states during The Renaissance. Fiume, I think.

It chose the person regarded as the best writer to lead it every year. It survived a long time in the vicious politics of the era.

This, I believe, is a good idea. A good writer has to be aware. That's what makes a good writer, the awareness of what it is to be human.

Comedians are the same. They have to be aware of the dichotomies and hypocrisies of the world, the inherent humor in it. Here's a good example from George Carlin.

Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don't fall out of the sky. They don't pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It's what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're going to get selfish, ignorant leaders. Term limits ain't going to do any good; you're just going to end up with a brand new bunch of selfish, ignorant Americans. So, maybe, maybe, maybe, it's not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here… like, the public. Yeah, the public sucks. There's a nice campaign slogan for somebody: "The Public Sucks. Fuck Hope."

Without awareness good policy is impossible.

Am I the only one who don't find Al Franken to be the least bit funny?

He's got TV savvy and is well spoken though, so as long as he's not an idiot, he'll do well enough in public office. If he's also clever, which I have no idea, he'll do more than well.

The great state of Minnesota's choices of Governor and Senator make me question exactly what is in the water up there! Not that it is necessarily bad, but it sure is different.

Sev, in case you didn't catch the drift, this is about the fun of having a true professional comedian in there with all the amateurs.

Besides, chads freeze off in Minnesota, didn't ya know?

Just what we need, a Senator that make Bush look like a Mensa member

DP, that is such bullshit.

You may not agree with his politics... but Franken is obviously intelligent.

...and you wonder why people get pissed at you. Did you talk about his politics? Did you comment on policy?

Nah. You went straight for the personal insult.

Wise up. You don't want to be insulted, don't immediately reach for insulting others.

Heyyyy you said it wasn't really gonna be political!
Like anyone believed you... :D

What Rob said and especially what George Carlin said. There's no reason on earth why a comedy writer can't be a good senator. If a washed-out B-grade actor from Hollywood can be president of the United States, why can't a comedian?

That's why Air America is such a drain on George Soros bank account? Because what Stuart Smalley has to say is so important everyone want's to hear it.

If he was funny it might be different but he isn't a pimple on Carlin's butt.

I know, just pointing out that there will be yet another aspect to this election. I can see the comic material for Franken on SNL soon....skits about rigged elections and such.
