Audio Story - First Efforts - Would appreciate feedback...

I recorded an audio story at someone's request... I have just started doing this and am finding it quite fun. However, being new, there's obviously a learning curve.

I would appreciate a little feedback here (not on the content, as I didn't write it, but on the delivery). Please note that the author asked me to include "sound effects" ... Be nice naturally, but I do actually appreciate constructive criticism and general thoughts.

I would also appreciate any technical tips for improving the quality of the recording (like how to get me to quit "popping" my p's, dang it). I am using Audacity and literally have only tried to record and done a small amount of cutting where I screwed up. Other than that, I don't know the program at all. So if anyone has some tips for that program, I would appreciate that as well.

Recording audio

First off - fab story and performance! Particularly liked the sound effects.

On a technical note, although I do not use Audacity, the rules are similar for most kinds of software and to remove popping, use what is called a "pop-guard". You often see vocalists using them in studios and it looks like a pair of tights (or hose as I believe you call them) stretched over a wire coat hanger. Until my wife bought me a proper guard, this is what I used.

Form the hanger into a circle and stretch the tighs over it to form a screen. Hold this between your mouth and the mic to prevent popping. (You feel a bit silly but you get used to it - and wash the tights first!)

You could try recording the vocal part first, then playing it back in your headphones whilst adding sound effects on a second track. Then mix the two tracks together with Audacity.This link covers it I believe:-

I'll admit I was quite flushed by the time I got to the end of the freestyle. That was amazing and I hope you keep up the good work.

Erica, thank you for responding... Since I don't pursue women per se, I wasn't sure if women would enjoy it or not. I actually have been wondering how women would feel about the "sound effects" of the story line. Grins... seems like such a guy thing... LOL

Hi there One woman to another, you have a lovely voice. I have done some recording myself, and am self-taught, so I understand your desire for technical assistance. If you want better sound quality you will need to invest in better equipment. A good mic with a pop-filter and a USB pre-amp (I like M-Audio) as well as good editing software (I recommend Audacity to newbies--it is far more user friendly than the one I use). The pacing is good. Your enunciation is good. A pop screen would help with the plosives (I have more problem with esses). Editing software would allow you to amplify your voice for better volume control.

The problem with recording erotica is that so much of the stuff out there sounds 'read'. I prefer to hear stories that have more of a 'told' feeling. 'Read' stories sound either monotonous, or 'acted', rather than natural. I'd love to hear you read a story in a natural voice, telling it, rather than acting it.

I liked the sound effects.

Listened to it yesterday and found it a lot like Old School radio.

Some technical issues that you may have ( volume too low, etc) didn't really effect my enjoyment, so good job for a virgin.

Thanks for the comments. I don't seem to have a volume input on the microphone. I tried turning up the input volume on the Audacity software but it doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Volume seems better with headphones than without...

Any suggestions?

P.S. Is old school radio a good thing???

Ok not much help what kind of mic are you using?

Maybe post processing the mp3 with (?) Magix Mp3Maker, it's cheap and does a good job with track merges and stuff.

Old School Radio is a good thing. I remember afternoons laying on the cool floor in the summer listening to radio shows when there was nothing on TV that I wanted to watch. I mean how much "I love Lucy" can you watch?

I'd rather listen to your sexy voice simulating a climax.
